Should you ever meet your hero's????????
« on: December 02, 2008, 05:48:21 PM »
People say that you should never meet your hero's - agree - disagree????

Some people say that you never see them in the same light as you did before?I suppose its like us on here,we all have an idea of what each other are like because of the pics on the avatars & the way people post etc but then you could meet someone from here & they are nothing like what you thought they would be.

Has anyone on here ever met or spoken to MK 8) & on reflection afterwards said "I wish that hadn't happened" ????

I know that I wished he would have said that he wanted to go for a few pints with us after the gig :P.I know some guys that have met footballers/artists over the years & found them to be completely different than what they expected - & most in a negative way at that!
If it aint broke dont fix it!

I have never met MK.  I can see your point.  I have certainly made some assumptions about MK over the years which could lead to disappointment if I were to ever meet him.  But rather than that being MKs fault it would be my own for make a pre-conceived idea of him.

My biggest concern would be what to say.  Obviously I'd like to say thank-you, but he must talk to so many fans.  How many of them actually leave a mark in his memory, because of who they are or what they said?  I doubt he gets tired of hearing thank-you, but I bet they're a few repetitive questions.  One of them being...  why won't you play TOL?!?!? :)

I have already written the story of the time I met Mark in a gig review on the other forum, so I hope I won't bore those of you who have read it before, so please forgive me.

It happened in Newcastle in May and my husband and I were having a stroll around Newcastle city centre in the afternoon before the show.  We were passing a hotel and espied Mark and Richard sitting in the foyer with Danny.  We were completely surprised and waved to them and then walked on around the corner.  A few minutes later we heard a voice shout to us and a black Mercedes had drawn alongside with Mark leaning out of the window and calling us over with a huge smile on his face.  We were completely gobsmacked as could be expected in the circumstances!  Mark said hello and asked us how we were and my mind went a complete blank for a moment.  When I had gathered myself together a bit I said that we had been to some shows and that we were enjoying them very much and he said "Thank you very much, it's always nice to hear that".  Then my husband asked if he was in good form for the show that evening and he said he was in excellent form, thank you.  What I remember is his beautiful smile and his politeness.  The strange thing is I don't even remember saying goodbye!

I don't regret meeting him, but I really would like to have another opportunity to meet him because we were taken completely off-guard and I would like to be more composed next time and speak a bit more coherently!  It is something I will never forget though.

I have not met Mark yet but I am hopful that I will some day. Like everyone else, I would like to say something "different" or "memorable" to him, to make me stand out from the rest. Wrong thing to do I suspect. Probably wants to be treated like how you would treat any one else.

No bragging here. I have been lucky enough to

:meet Roger Daltry a few times whilst fishing at his Trout Fishery in Burwash, East Sussex.

:be taken to supper by Midge Ure of Ultravox at the hight of his music fame and charity work with Bob Geldof.

:spend a day at the country retreat of the bass player for Simple Minds. We got pissed up on strong lager in his sauna (but did not have sex!). I can't even think of his name now.

:meet Annie Lennox - say no more in case my wife visits the AMIT forum!

The thing that struck me about them all is that they are like you and I! But........ they all have had a big lucky break somewhere along the line, which they can recognise, and also, they all have a significant intellect/streetwise sharpness about them. None of these guys disappointed me and I was totally impressed by their ordinariness (- if that's a word!) and how rounded they were as people.

So, if you ever do get lucky enough to meet our hero my advice would be treat him like any new introduction and don't be too surprised if he's a normal decent bloke who would like treated as such!

We all can hope........ ;)

Interesting debate.
I guess it all depends of who the "hero" is. In the case of MK, I can safely say from my own experience and that of everybody here who has met him, you won't be disapoionted. He's just an ordinary bloke with an extraordinary job, no surprises here.

If the hero is somebody whose fame has gone to their head, I'd stay clear of them!

Hey Waterline man good question!

I might be too nervous and perhaps start to talk in Dutch or say something stupid. I know it is crazy to act like that because I am always the one that says that Mark is an ordinary guy and could be my best man next door!  :P ;D

Considering the MK fans I met in March and at the party of Ingrid and Nigel, I have to say they all are such great, nice and wonderful people! Although we didn't have so much time, it was great to meet them. It was even better then I could have dreamed and it really felt like we knew each other for years when I met them the first time! ..........All I want is meet them next time again! :-*

Quote Ian: "How many of them actually leave a mark in his memory, because of who they are or what they said?"

Ian I have the perfect idea to let Mark remember me!  ;D .......*Looking around now .....No nobody is watching .......listen* "I could undress myself in front of Mark"  :o ............ He sure would remember for years watching my body and how hard he ran away!  ;D
