I find it tastes like "Manha de carnaval" from the Black Orpheus opera...

I think his move toward the jazz side of things is terrific!  It's haunting and the honesty in his voice has few peers, especially as he closes out the song.  This genre and styling is absolutely perfect for my tastes.  I think this shift makes DTRW a superb album.

Great ballad but the lyrics hint of a dark back story like Hill Farmer Blues.  Does anyone else feel that?

Completely agree; the setup in the beginning is especially trenchant: "When you leave...There’s cordite in the air". Once again, MK creates an incredibly visual atmosphere for his song.
And what a beautiful song!

I have a deep feeling that the song was influenced by Chet Baker musically, particularly that masterpiece come to mind:
