Recommendations for MK related places to visit
« on: January 14, 2023, 02:04:00 PM »
Greetings all-
I was listening on YouTube to MK channel interview with Mark at British Grove from a few years ago now, just before DTRW was released. I started thinking about how it’d be nice to visit and get more familiar with some of the places and locales that influence(d) Mark and have a place in his background and writing. I live in southeast US so am much more familiar with the South and Route 66 sort of places that make up MK’s notion of “where the Delta meets the Tyne”.  But I’d like to see more of the other half of that equation and have never been to UK before.

What would be some of the best / must see places you’d recommend?  And differences from Mark’s growing up years vs. more recent times?  I’d be interested in experiences too (not just specific places)  that shouldn’t be missed…

—Newcastle
—Other places from Geordie land?
—British Grove would nice (don’t know that it’s really open to public though?)

Any recommendations of things to see in general would be great. I see that a trek from Geordieland to London would encompass quite a bit of the countryside.

Many thanks and would look forward to seeing that area at some point.

On previous visits to London (I live in England but about 200 miles away from the capital) I've come across a few places mentioned in the Dire Straits discography. The Cutty Sark (Francis Chichester's ship, featured in Single Handed Sailor) is in Greenwich towards the eastern side of London. Shaftesbury Avenue (Wild West End) is on the western side of the city centre in the middle of the commercial area, while Speaker's Corner (Industrial Disease) is also on the western side near the Marble Arch at the northeast corner of Hyde Park. It's worth noting if you're also into Pink Floyd that Hyde Park isn't far from Battersea Power station and you can catch a glimpse of the structure put to unforgettable use on the Animals album cover (it has now been converted to a residential development but the four towers remain unmistakable).
I got shot off my horse, so what I'm up again...

Thanks much for that info! Appreciate the tips.

Can't forget Farrer House, the apartment they lived in when they formed Dire Straits
