This is a good one, and well worth some discussion.

The tracks Jbaent links to are from Mavis Staples 3rd album from 1979. Mark is credited and it seems both Barry Beckett and Jerry Wexler were also involved.

Anyone heard of this collaboration before?

Could it have been done around the time of slow train coming? Both seem to have been recorded at Muscle Shoals with similar personnel, same producer.

Mk did five sessions in 1979. Steely Dan, Mavis Staples, Sandy McLelland, Lee Fardon and Bob Dylan.

The one with Mavis Staples was before the Dylan one, probably Wexler and Beckett needed someone or want to try how good was MK as a session player...

Sandy and Lee sessions were both in London, actually MK produced the Lee Fardon session but he wasn't happy with it and didn't release it, until recently. Just search in YouTube "Windows display" by Lee Fardon with Mark Knopfler.

Interesting.

It's just odd that i knew about all the other sessions you mentioned and have them all in one form or another,  just had never heard of the Mavis Staples one.

What do you think of the Lee Fardon one?

It's not good, at least for my taste.

I knew about the Mavis Staples from years and years ago. It was only available on vinyl until recently that has been released on cd.

That's a great list, but is it me or is the Mavis Staples collaboration not listed there?

As far as I can tell it is not. It's great but not a perfect source.

Isn't it great that after all these years you can still find new Knopfler collaborations. Makes you wonder what else is out there....

I've got a copy of the Oldfield book lying around in the loft, I'll dig it up and find the reference.
