Live at the BBC / Dortmund 1980
« on: December 27, 2011, 07:18:43 PM »
Hi all,
I am getting confused over the TOL live version on the "Live at the BBC" official album.
The bookets says it comes from the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1981.
But there is no trace on the internet of such a show; there is only a trace of the TOL track played on 29.11.1980, which is now one of the Alchemy DVD/Bluray bonus tracks. This version is shorted (no intro). On the other hand, the track on the CD sounds exactly, note for note, word for word, like the Dortmund 80 version - which makes me feel it actually IS the Dortmund version.
So, why labelling it as Old Grey Whistle Test ? is it a mere mistake ? Was the Old Grey Whistle Test a radio show as well as a TV show ? was this track actually played on BBC radio ? or is it a rights issue, like the BBC has bought this track from the German TV ? it this is the case, then maybe BBC has bought more ? I would really love to see the Dortmund show released as an official video. I did not know a lot about the OL tour until I came accross this show on youtube, and I found it brillant ! certainly not nearly as polished as "On the Night" or even "Alchemy", but so fresh, powerful, energetic.... These versions of DTTW, Lions, and News are so cool !
Thanks if you can enlighten me !
Cheers

As far as I know everything on the "Live at the BBC" series comes from material from the BBC archives. I never noticed that the TOL version comes from Dortmund 80 instead of the one from the Old Grey Whistle Test, if thats true, its very rare...

It could be possible that several radios of several countries bought the rights to broadcast it, as it was a kind of broadcasted festival, but I dont know  ???

Yes the TOL version comes from Dortmund 80, and it was broadcasted in 1981, so it's the date that remained on the booklet.

Yes On location tour is great, it contains some awesome versions of News, single handed sailor, In the gallery, WDYTYG, Angel of Mercy, Lions, DTTW, and last but not least, some pre-album versions of Telegrah road !

A this time, Mark tried many new arrangements, and Alan Clark brought many new ideas to the songs

if you don't know very much this tour, try Wiesbaden (best WDYTYG), Werchter (best Angel of mercy), Emerald City, San francisco (best SHS), New York, San remo (best TR) you will discover the alchemy era in construction !  :)

I don't know much more about BBC rights.

Ingo attended this concert, and wrote this fabulous article here :

he doesn't talk about BBC, but maybe if you ask him he could enlighten you (and us  ;))
