Don't get the line about Pick and smoke and fuel. Someone could explain to me?

Wikipedia states October 7th (German Wikipedia Oct 10th)

I can't remember as I was seven years old by then and more into other stuff

Don't get the line about Pick and smoke and fuel. Someone could explain to me?

Maybe that Pick only played if all the musicians would pay for his petrol and cigarettes? Pretty stupid, if you ask me...
But the rehearsing studio isn't free anyway, so what's the point? Then I rehearse with musicians, I don't pay for their fuel

Probably means that Pick was a smoker and asked them to have cigarettes if they  want him to go and play with them. I believe the fuel thing would.means to fill his car back home. Pick was an "outsider" in the band, the only of them who was playing sessions professionally so probably he wanted to at least be paid with cigarettes and also had paid his fuel expenses.

Mk, David and John lived together and were amateur. Pick was asked to join them by MK and was a session player so he asked at least to had his fuel expenses and cigarrets paid to join them.

Mk, David and John lived together and were amateur. Pick was asked to join them by MK and was a session player so he asked at least to had his fuel expenses and cigarrets paid to join them.

I know this kind of musicians, I played with professionals before and their pragmatic approach always makes me sick. This is why I never wanted to be a professional musician, because instead of creating something you can think only about money and how to survive.
