Which track would you leave off the album?
« on: February 01, 2023, 08:33:02 PM »
On the basis that no album is perfect, which track would you leave off Shangri-La if you were trimming?

I'll start: All That Matters. OK, but uneventful

That's one of my faves, and became even more meaningful after I became a father, so no dice.

I would remove Don't Crash the Ambulance. It's vaguely amusing but doesn't make sense and doesn't stand up to repeated listens.

I love Shangri-La and it vies with Sailing To Philadelphia as my favourite of Mark's solo albums. I think Sailing To Philadelphia on balance has the stronger set of songs and greater stylistic variety, but Shangri-La is a more cohesive album with a set of songs that complement each other. However, there is one song that in my opinion does not fit well with the others and it's Don't Crash The Ambulance. I think I get what he was trying to go for with this track, but it isn't quite funny enough to compensate for the unpleasantness of the lyrics and it is out of place tonally with the rest of the album, making for a jarring closing track. I usually end the album with Donegan's Gone, which makes for a surprisingly effective closer as it picks up the energy somewhat after two very slow tracks.
I got shot off my horse, so what I'm up again...

Shangri-La is one of Mark's best work and I love it.
This is all the heaven we've got, right here where we are in our Shangri-La.

My thoughts exactly, stated more eloquently than I could manage :)
