Allman Brothers' 'Southbound' vs. DS' 'Southbound again'
« on: January 05, 2014, 05:26:47 PM »
Hi there
I was never familiar with the life and works of the Allman Brothers and today I was listening to their "Brothers and Sisters" album. The song "Southbound" sounded me kind of similar to "Southbound again", mainly in the first minutes, both musically and lyrically.

Mark never mentioned Allman Brothers Band as an influence on his music, so I wonder if anyone else noted the same pattern between the two songs.

Except the word southbound I cannot hear much similarity here.

And I don't know of any connection between them and MK, neither to any other southern rock band like lynard skynard, except that surely Mark knew them as they were very popular in the 70ies.
I know that he was into the amazing rhythm aces, I guess as these did some wonderful funky rhythm stuff and wrote great songs

I agree with Ingo.
The AAB song is a classic 12 bars scheme, nothing special, and the funky rhythm is quite standard too.

I love AAB though, especially live at filmore east.
Duane Allman was a great guitar player IMHO, and if the Layla album is a masterpiece, it's surely due to his presence on it.

My favorite Clapton album was great because Duane was in it. Sounds strange though.  ;D
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

it's my fav clapton studio album too (my fav live album is EC was here)

but I think it's not really a "clapton" album :

- almost all songs are co-composed and co-written with Withlock
- Duane brings far more than only playing
- same for Gordon (even if Withlock claims that the layla outro is by him)

so I'd say it's really a band album, not a solo album

You are right JF. EC was here is my fav Clapton live as well! I am looking for the expanded edition, but great live and cover!  ;)  You are right that it is a band effort, and perhaps Clapton was accepting this by not using his name (though some say it was for psychological reasons-hiding in a band) .   From the rest I like 461 and slowhand.
Come on, it is not funny anymore.
