Did Mark ever play OES after DS broke up?
« on: October 05, 2013, 12:48:59 PM »
I've been thinking about it. Since that song was one of the "big" ones from the previous DS tour, did he hang on to it for some time after going solo? Too bad he didn't play it on "A night in London".

BTW, I know he doesn't really like to tell what his songs are about, but have any of you read an interview where he says anything about that song? I know I have either seen or read something where he talks about it, but he never REALLY explained it (or, thats how I remember it at least, could be wrong though)  ;D

There are quite a few possible interpretations of that song in my opinion, it would be interesting to know what he thought of when he wrote it.

Cheers!

On Every Street has yet to be performed since the last Dire Straits tour.  Apparently Mark prefers to play this one when there is a pedal steel guitarist in the band.  It was in the rehearsal list for the Ragpicker's Dream tour in 2003 as there was a pedal steel player called Fats Kaplin in the line-up, but of course that tour was cancelled due to Mark's motorcycle accident.

I remember an interview Mark did with Richard Allinson, one of my favourite radio presenters on Radio 2 way back when he was promoting The Ragpicker's Dream in 2002.  Richard asked him to choose and 'oldie' to play on air and Mark chose On Every Street.  Asked why, Mark didn't really explain the meaning behind the track and I don't believe he ever has, but he said he chose it because it was 'the last one that we [Dire Straits] did', and that by that time he was getting much more into the recording process and that he had enjoyed making that particular album.

Unfortunately I don't have a recording of that particular interview but I do recall certain parts of it. It was on Richard Allinson's late night show that he used to present from 22:30-00:00, Monday to Thursday each week. Perhaps someone else might have a recording.

I've read an interview once in which Geroge Martin compared the song to Puccini's works.

But regarding to his work on the album, credits go only to Ticket to Heaven, not On Every Street itself.

Thanks for your input everybody!

It makes me glad that he spoke positively of that album. I've gotten the sense that he didn't like that album since he seemed tired of DS and the whole thing around that time. I think it's unfair of the album because it has so many brilliant moments IMHO. I would pay a lot of money to hear him play OES again, with our without pedal steel!
