So the song they've rehearsed in Stavanger should be Back To Tupelo -- it fits with the picture, Mike plays guitar on it, capo is on the second fret and there's the F-Chord played in the chorus when playing with the capo.

Most likely,
Back to Tupelo is in the key of Bm existing of the   :Bm,A,G,G6                    &D chords.
so with a capo on the second fret you can play the :Am,G,G(6)barre 3rdpos. &C chords
On the picture you can see Mike playing the G-barre (E-shape) in 3rd position.

And he uses the same guitar during "Back to Tupelo" as the guitar on the picture

"so with a capo on the second fret you can play the :Am,G,G(6)barre 3rdpos. &C chords"

I'd rather say : Am, G, F, F(6) and C chords if you are in the "virtual" key of C.
And the F chord is played in the E shape, if you want, but to me, it's the way to play a F chord, if you imagine the capo being the end of the neck.

and, BTW, there a lot more chords on Tupelo than the few quoted here  ;)

yeah I guess in tab books it will be printed as a F(6) when the capo is on second fret.
that's why I wrote G(6) BARRE in third position, which is an E-shape chord and a capo has no influence because the chord use no open-string(s), but tab wise you are right. :smack
what if the D was played on the fifth fret in an A shape, we would call it a D barre in the fifth position (A-shape), thats why I wrote a G barre in third position (E shape or F shape if it feels better )  :hmm

how many (main) chords am I missing..................? :think

Well in fact, not so many, but 2 important chords in the song harmony, especially for the solos :
Dm, and C7M, and the C7 during the chorus

check fabulous Foma's work here :
http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/m/mark_knopfler/shangri-la_album_crd.htm

notice that the Dm(/F) becomes an Em(/G) ( in third position) when played in Bm and for that capo-ed on the second fret.
Em   (3rd pos.)   XX5453
Em/G(3rd pos.)  3X5453
G6     (3rd pos.)  3X5453

As you see no much difference with the G6 chord

I prefer the G6 above the DM7 because it flows more "radical"  into the A chord although they have no note in common,
I am not sure what Mark plays.

DM7 (2nd pos.) X54222  D F# A C# (capo-ed 2nd fret)
G6    (open)      32X43X  G B D       (capo-ed 2nd fret)

off course I give you credit for the D7  ;D

Try here with the song simultaneously :
http://achords.com/chords/mark-knopfler/back-to-tupelo/

thx mate  :wave

thanks for your tab I'll try it  :)

of course you are right, a G6 chord and  a Em chod are quite the same chords, Em being the relative minor of G.
But I don't know why, it's more "natural" to me to "think" Em when I heard this section.

As for the D major 7,I think it  is quite obvious during the solo. at least it sounds Dmaj7 without any doubt to me.
check out Foma's cover , he's playing the major 7 (but a C chord because of the capo) :
http://www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php/topic,2757.0.html

of course we ca'nt be 100% sure what mark plays on record, but Foma's tabs are a very reliable source IMHO.  :)

Maybe can we found a video from this tour or 2005, and looking what Richard (or Mike) are Playing ?

yeah foma plays an CM7 figure indeed :X32000 capo-ed on second fred on his acoustic,
it seems that his friend at that moment picks some note's around the Bminor chord and scale, which has, with one note off (c#>c), the same notes as the G ionic scale , and he picks some b,g,d,e notes too , and those notes are together  a G6.

so it can be a mixture, what note does the bass-player strum, and the second guitar?

you know, I will switch them once in a while  :think

nice version of Postcard from Paraguay ,

whaha I hope nobody ask about the two different capo settings fret 1(acoustic ) and 6 (electric) :lol

It's just sounds 'right' for me in the duo situation, if you check MK's early live versions, Richard Bennett played same chords, but in different positions. For their full-band situation it's better to play 'close'-position chords, like he did, just because it would sound better. Acoustic covers is better with 'open' chords indeed. And MK have a bass, etc...

I really wonder if this subliminal "Bob-bashing" that takes place since the 2012 tour is a Guy-thing alone or if Mark (in private) has made the odd statement about Bob Dylan, too. I really feel astonished about it - remember the 2011 tour and the last gigs at Hammersmith when everything was glourious and great.
But I don't want to open a new Dylan-discussion here, it is obviously some kind of "running gag" from Guy's side..

LE

Havent heard of this before. What the story?
Did they (or Guy) get fed up with the Bob tour in '12?

Read the 2012 tour diary. One could come to the conclusion that Guy has a little bit fed up with "you know who" indeed... He never spoke to him obviously during both tours and was a little pissed about the short soundcheck time that was left to Mk and band after Bob and his band used to be a little incalculable during their own soundcheck... I suggest to really read the diaries and some of the posts at the forum from that time, although that is not so easy to handle...

I really enjoyed the concert on the whole. I'd deliberately kept myself from checking set lists to prior concerts as to not 'know what to expect', and I found I was in for a real treat with a great variation of songs for about the first 2/3's of the concert, but the latter 1/3 were a 'disappointment' because when Speedway at Nazareth followed Marbletown (and then Telegraph Road, etc.) it was all too familiar from previous concerts I've attended (same songs in the same order) and it was a clear announcement that they were nearing the end. Also, I felt a bit 'cheated' that there were only two encores. I felt we were tearing down the arena after Telegraph Road -clapping wasn't enough; people were stomping the floor, and everyone on the floor remained standing throughout the encore, giving it a whole different experience than it was to sit down and listen... so, yeah... I'd've wanted a third encore...

Thx for your review,

Good that you didn't had the curiosity to peek the setlist before, in that case all songs are surprises at least 2/3 of it .
Encores? ? ? come on , you know better than that, If the lights and the wave's and hand kisses came after Marbletown you had 4 encores. ;D

If you want encores visit a Leonard Cohen concert nearby 78 years old gentleman three encores containing 8 songs:

This was my first and only concert on this tour. I usually only go to one MK show per tour. Since the setlists and performances are so steady.

A few impressions for this one (after listening to a lot of youtube clips and a coule of the soundboard sticks)

Marks seemed in better mood, more relaxed and more humours (seems to be the same for all shows on this tour) than ever seen before on videos or in concert.

Its really nice and gives the shows a good athmosphere. Especially since Mark usually isn't too talkative. Also he is by no means a show man and has a tendancy to be looking down at the floor or turning his back to the audience a lot.   Anyway we are not here for showmanship anyhow  but it does become a little annoying.

But the new little trick of claiming to wanna start "Only you and I, Richard"  for I Used to could, and then stopping the song a few bars in since Jim starts on piano before Richard. REALLY loosens up the atmosphere.

Nice touch also which I havent heard on any other shows it the extended jam we got on Gator blood.  Basically they turned it into "can't be satisfied" in the last few minutes, complete with the odd chord changes of the Muddy Waters original. VERY SWEET!

I understand people have been a little down on the lack of SOS and the continuation of Sonny Liston, among other songs live.

I for one didn't miss SOS. I don't think Mark owes anyone anything in the regard. This is a MK solo concert not a DS museum concert people are attending.  I can easily see that it would have been a total FINALE if they would have had SOS as last encore this night.  But imperfactly fine with it not being there.

Having listened to versions of Kingdom of Gold  and also Sonny Liston - I really would have wanna hear those. What amazing soloing on KOG!!  Also I think they have made Liston WAY better now.  He really plays some serious rock n roll Hendrix like stuff on that. People should really give it another chance in its current arrangement. It's so ghettorish ans something MK does not have in other songs.

Lastly It reall has occoure to me that a lot of this stuff about which songs to play or not does not matter from a guitar- soloing perspective.  A lot of his reperoire is really similar. So why would somebody wanna heard Calling Elvis instead of Speedway, why would on wanna her WOL hen he is playing similar guitarplaying on Used to Could and so forth.

Of Corus I knwo people wanna hear the classics, but guitarwise he is still giving us al lot.

What a band and a stellar perfomance from MK too, both vocally and on guitar.

agree about Sonny. it's a shame that the song is repetitive, because the tone and the solo are really worth listent IMHO. He should add some licks between verses to remove the monotony on the song

about playing guitar similarity on different songs I agree too, but it shows that sometimes Marks repeats himself... (well, it's the case of many artists). But you know, when you listen to a new album, there are rarely "surprises" you always hear licks, tones, arrangements you've already heard on previous songs/albums.

as for the live experience, even if it is the "same guitar playing", changing songs would at least change melodies. I agree with your examples, but listen to differents songs would change the monotony of the last 1/3 of the show since almost 10 years...
