Christmas Shopping
« on: December 14, 2012, 01:07:11 PM »
It occurred to me a while back while watching a the news that while so many of us are doing our shopping online these days we are actively killing our high street shops.  While it isn't always possible or practical to purchase in a particular shop for our products it may be an idea this Christmas to do our shopping on our high streets.

Now, no doubt our lady members are well prepared and have our gifts already bought in October but we gentlemen always leave it until Christmas eve!

So far I've bought one present online and one in a shop.  I only bought online because I can't find that particular present anywhere.  Obviously there are limitations to this:  I'm not going to spend a lot more but a little I don't mind .

I'm not preaching and respect everyones decision on which way to shop.  It's perhaps different if you have more shopping to do than I, so what are you doing this Christmas?

P.S.  Do you get German markets at Christmas in Germany? ;D

I have bought my husband's presents from a very well-known UK high street chain store and I have bought several children's books and games from another UK high street book shop.   I have also bought a couple of jumpers for myself from a European online shop, which I hope will please Pottel!    ;D

We decided only to give presents to the children of the family, so I didn`t have to buy so many presents this year... and I bought some online and some at our local dealer. It

I always try to buy everything in the highstreetshops. I live in a village from 23.000 people. We have some nice shops, but more and more have to stop. I never bought CD's online because I wanted to keep the CD-shop (even when the CD-shop was a little more expensive), but it had to stop mid 2012. It's no fun to do online shopping, I don't always know what to buy and by strolling from shop to shop I always get an idea.

So I totally agree with you DMG.

Personally I cant wait to get to the shops this weekend to cash in the many giftcards I received...got my eye on a tera-byte external drive that I can purchase with what I have...YEAH! More live shows.....always better. As far as my Christmas gift purchases went..no online buys.. I prefer to see what I'm buying. Mount Amazon is big enough without me contributing to it.  ;D

I haven't bought my christmas gifts online. Simply because once in a while I really enjoy to actually go out to do my shopping.
Well..., I have bought cd's, dvd's and things like that online before, but I certainly won't buy shoes or clothing online.
Shoes and clothing are things you have to try on, feel and see how it looks, that's why I still don't buy things like that online.

As for record stores...... Untill some years ago there was this very nice vintage record store in my neigbourhood shopping centre.
As a teen I used to love to go there. I bought my first cd's there when I was 15/16 years old. I remember you could actually listen to the cd or record (yes, they also sold vinyl records) before buying it. I think the owner sold the store in 2007, it's a boutique for more expensive childrens clothing now. Very sad, I sometimes miss those days.

Talking about cd's and records. A trend I do like, is that vinyl records are becoming more and more popular again in these days of Ipods. Iphones and music downlaods.
I am actually thinking of getting myself a turntable, as I do have some nice original vinyl records (my mom passed some of hers down to me. Me and my mom have plenty of artists we both like).

Maaike, happy New Year! My childhood days' local music shop closed in 2008 and has turned into a clothes shop as well! I went there to say goodbye, even though the owner didn't recognise me and anyway he was closing it due to old age.

But vinyl never went away really. In the mid to late 90ies the production was really limited and the vinyl really expensive and only available to the few that had preordered or lucky enough to have a good musoc store close to them. But since 2003 things started to turn in favour of vinyl. Maybe it had to do with the quality, the fetish of it or even the different state of mind it takes to listen to music with a turntable. But the prices never went down I am afraid. The new trick for the companies was to create collectibles straight from the production line, with so high prices that only the die hard fans or the vinyl stock market shops were ready to buy them. Truth is that you can find great music on used vinyl with just 1 Euro at sales and sometimes music that is not available on CD. I would recommend vinyl, at least to those that have space in their home!
Come on, it is not funny anymore.

I remember some years ago, together with some other MK-fans, we visited the biggest HMV-store in London (was it Bondstreet?).
We actually spent there hours and hours and I believe I had to fly back to Holland with a new suitcase because I bought the whole shop (BBB said so, not me  ;D)
That's why I hate it that so many music-shops are closed now. I like to stroll around and try to find something I like.

There's a little old independent record shop that I'm very pleased to say is still going strong!  It's in Stirling and sells vinyl, CD's and used to sell bootlegs (maybe still does).  I've bought a number of things there like the Comfort and Joy LP, Sultans single, ExtendedancEPlay and a number of bootlegs.  The owner would play them and let you listen to the quality through the store sound system.  I remember he always wore shorts and a Hawaiian shirt - even in winter!  Amazingly, I found pictures of the wee shop:
