Chris Rea song 'Sail away' sounds like R&J intro.
« on: March 16, 2010, 07:20:45 PM »
Hi all. I'm listening to lots of Chris Rea at the moment. I've just bought his 'King Of The Beach' cd from 2000. Imo one of his best. Very chilled out.
I was listening to the track 'Sail Away' and thought how similar it sounded from 23 seconds in, to the intro to R&J just before the steel guitar kicks in. What do you think?

Hi Baggies,

I also listen to a lot of CR stuff and honestly I hardly hear any similarities  ??? "Sail Away" reminds me of some Motown tracks and of course older songs by CR himself, though. Unfortunately he is prone to copy himself quite blatantly...on "King Of The Beach" he even covers his song "Guitar Street" from 1982 (from the album simply named "Chris Rea", a very underrated one!), but it's alright, it's his music  :) KOTB in my opinion is one of his weakest albums - it can't hold a candle to e.g. "Dancing With Strangers" or "Auberge".

Cheers,

Tobi

I saw Chris Rea live at the weekend down in Brighton.  It was great as I expected.

We saw him in Birmingham last week, he was on very good form, excellent.  A mix of the later blues and earlier stuff

It doesn't just sound like it - it is it! The live intro. I imagine Mk turning round - spotlight on him, with his National Guitar in hand and start picking away.

Not many people know this but in 1988 Chris Rea was going to join Dire straits.

Any proof for this bold fact? I think it was more a question if Dire Straits are willing to join him than vice versa... And back in 1988 the band was dead... apart from the Mandela gig. Just curious...

No it was all hearsay I am afraid  - but he pulled out because they could not agree a name for the band. Apparently he wanted to call it Dire Rea!  ;D

Yes, saw him too just a week ago. It was really great, his playing was powerful but accurate and sometimes subtle. He seemed to be in a good shape. I do hope that he will be able to start a tour every now and then in the upcoming years.
And she's sitting in her Lusso, in the early morning sun.

I heard the resemblance to R&J. CR can easily be my second favorite singer after MK.  I love the guitar solo of "road to hell"

Yeah yeah, the gag going around about 20 years ago was that he was supposed to marry princess Di as well but the relationship fell apart when she realised what the marriage name was going to be :o - no disrespect to princess Di,she was a stunner!

Chris Rea is another legend,my dream would be to see himself & MK on the one stage.I've seen him about 10 times over the years, theres no crap its just walk out pick up the guitar & lets get on with it - great to see him looking a bit better :)
If it aint broke dont fix it!
