Title: RSD: One take radio sessions on vinyl (8 tracks)
Post by: localhero1986 on February 06, 2025, 07:50:06 PM
Just received an email that the RSD release this year will be the One take radio sessions on vinyl. Nice to have hah? 8)

It seems to be the 8 track version, which is nice imo! Not a renamed 6 track Trawlerman’s Song EP.

Hmm.

I have the CD. I think I maybe listened to it once in the last 20 years?

That said, I had really good fun queuing up with other nerds on RSD last year.

Will probably end up picking up a discounted copy down the line.

Like Dusty I listened to the CD very little and to make matters worse I personally don't own a record player!

I appreciate a new release but if they think recycling this is of interest then they need a "reset", as seems to be the buzz word atm.

Well, I am always thrilled with a new release, even if it is actually an old one. I don't think it is the format anymore, but rather the deeper meaning behind such re-issues. They mean that MK is still relevant and considered a solid investment for a record company to put something out for the fans, because this is a release for the fans really, and the fans are plenty enough to sustain such a release and also very keen to support many such releases through the years. Quite a few RSD releases are still available after a long time, so maybe they are already aware about the dynamic of the thing and do it to keep things alive, by pleasing the fans. So, although I would love something unreleased or hard to find  at better quality, I am also OK with this. I wonder if there is a nice way to put forward to the company, for consideration, what  we would consider worthy to be released. On the other hand, I guess projects that are released for the first time or are massive like the live albums remasters, are taking too much time and resources to be viable for a limited RSD release, so I guess we have to be content with such releases.

By the way, Shangri-La studio has apparently survived the Palisades fire.

Well, it's a non existing item on LP, but also are most of MK film scores of the 2000's, except Metro land which was issued also on RSD.

This new one is totally meaningless for me, the first one I'm gonna let it pass.

So, the record arrived yesterday and here are some photos, although I already see it on discogs for sale, which is peculiar, because it is supposed to be sold only through physical stores on the RSD.
Looks nice.Pressed in GZ

Keys Jim Cox and Matt Rollins... never was aware they played together here and also wasn't aware that Guy was obviously not involved. I have the CDs but obviously never bothered to read the credits...

I didn't bother setting out at 3.30am like last year for this, after all I like most of you have this on CD. OK you are gaining two 'new' tracks - Rudiger and Everybody Pays, and at £39.95p you will do just that!!

I will perhaps pick up a copy at leisure...

Can you listen to it? How's the pressing quality?

(Will get mine not before next Wednesday.)

Yes one CD-version is called 'The Trawlerman's Song EP" with 6  tracks, the other CD  "One Take Radio Sessions" with 8 tracks (Rüdiger and Everybody Pays added).

But The Trawlerman's Song from the EP. The Trawlerman's Song is the same version as on the Shangri-La album. Trawlerman's Song - the version from One Take Radio Sessions is live:)

It's a shame Mark doesn't promote his Record Store Day releases like for example Peter Gabriel. A picture would have been enough.

Sting did a short video from apparently his living room where he unpacked the record, put it on and played it.

Yes, that would have been great. But Mark is different as we all know.

That's true. I guess we shouldn't forget that :)

Yes, though unfortunately the RSD edition of Sting’s album (a new live album called 3.0 Live recorded on his current tour) was only available in a US and a few other select territories. A huge disservice to us fans. I have just, possibly rather foolishly, paid a not insignificant sum to order a leftover copy from a reseller on eBay. At least Mark’s people were sensible enough to ensure his RSD release was actually available to buy in the UK!

Vinyl only releases are dirty move toward people that are just in love of the music.

I've thought about this a lot over the last few years. There's something to it.

I guess so. Of course it is all about nostalgia selling. If memory serves, the BiA CD did the same thing back in 1985, serving people truncated versions of all songs on side A, except the one it deserved to be...  ;D

I agree about vinyl "only" releases (like The Boy). This years' record was released as a CD long ago and was just released on vinyl for the still booming market. I am sure next year will see another one, maybe Wag The Dog or All The Roadrunning (20 years next year).

All The Roadrunning has been issued on vinyl record.
The return of the vinyl record is a peculiar trend. It is merely 5% of total sales, and CD is another 5%.
But 50% of the buyers NEVER open their records, while more than 50% of the ones that do, play the records on crappy systems.
So record companies can safely assume that 75% of the people will not have a problem being fed with expensive yet below average records and the rest 25% may be lucky enough to find a good copy after returning several copies to whichever store they bought it from.
All collectors that are also into music, will open the record and listen to it. But although I condone this strategy, I was surprised to receive this at the shop a couple of days ago!

Seeing how many official live albums the Rolling stones have been releasing in the last decade or so, and the frequent Neil Young releases, I would feel despair if MK had a similar release schedule. I wouldn't be able to afford it. And it would lose its appeal.  So I am actually grateful that he is giving us one new or one from his back catalog every once in a while. A nice idea for a RSD release would be if he played some of his favourite songs, by other artists, like the two songs by JJ Cale, or some of the ones that appear in various collections . But since new recordings cost money and RSD releases are limited, I understand that this would be hard to do.
