I don't think you can have a better answer to this post than this:

this one is on my top of MK playing/singing a cover song :

Yeah, though opinions are a bit spit on this one. I've heard people complain it's too "cheesy", and too slow, Mark's singing is bad, and the original is much better. Comparing the two versions is pointless, of course, but this cover is a good tester of whether you "get" Mark's music or not. Yes, it's slow, and maybe a bit cheesy with this intro, Mark's singing is not singing, it's talking. There are way more good parts about it though than bad parts you can ever come up with, and it's objectively an amazing arrangement, perfect recording and reimagining of the 45-year-old song (at the time of recording).

I always had mixed feelings about "featuring MK" songs.
Despite i always look MK as a genius guitarist (as the fact the he almost invented a unique language as a player), I always felt the MK brilliance in other people songs are conditioned to these songs needed to be very well founed on the style of MK.
That one, in particular, i don't really like. Mark's singing is OK, but his playing is a bit off. The cheesy arrangement is a detail.

There is no spectacular guitar work, but this is so beautiful!

In general, I’m not a big fan of his instrumental contributions to songs. Not because of the contribution itself, but I think most producers and mixers don’t understand a thing about his playing. They totally butcher it with effects, making it sound too thin, with too much compression, etc.

I love this song so much that one listen is not enough! I have to listen over and over - it's so beautiful, especially the last verse. :)

Also can't forget about this one. Impressive singing by our rapping hero!

No. Mark mind seems miles away from this song.

Also recently I was reminded of this song with Mark singing in the impressively high register:

And also with Van Morrison (this topic is destined just to list ALL Mark's collaborations though):

This is a nice song and good backing track but absolutely the wrong key for MK at that stage :)

Very nice. I have the Sult album and there's lots of lovely music on there which I like besides On Raglan Road - Rocks of Bawn with Paul Brady and St Dominics Preview, Van Morrison especially.
-
Even as a Shads/Hank fan, I absolutely love MKs version of 'Atlantis' - such beautiful hammer ons!

Amen. Hard to compare the two versions really. If you’re thinking about Louis Armstrong then Mark is not a singer!! If we hadn’t heard the original then we’d have nothing to compare it against.
But I love both versions.

Always liked this simple but effective Jon Allen song, Jon has got such a good voice. Mark’s acoustic fills and backing vocals are nice, they sound simple/understated but they are pure class in the category less is more and every note is just right, especially his solo from 2.26 onward.

Oh yes, I love that song too! I still have no clue what it's actually about, but it sounds great. 🤣

Finally, I bought Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan (4 CD) There are many beautiful versions of Bob Dylan's songs by various artists. Mark closes the first album.

As soon as I start listening to this song I can hardly stop because it's so beautiful.

So good. You can tell it’s Mark I think….i’m pretty sure that I could be played the original and this and tell which is which. Think the drums are different too.

Although I like Dirk Powell's version very much, I think MK does a very good interpretation of Waterbound. :)

does not happen a lot, if at all, but in this case Dirk's version just takes me much further away, it,...hits me...

weird choice for a cover version. with his lifelong being a fan i would have expected,...anything but this, does not suit his qualities.

suits him much better than the Restless Farewell BD cover.

Some of my favourites:
Big River - Jimmy Nail.
The Shouting Stage - Joan Armatrading.
Inamorata - Guy Fletcher
Sarah - Jon Allen
Love Ove and Over - Kate and Anna McCarrigle

Some already have said this, but I too must admit that most MK collaborations seem rather pointless and/or plain weak. However, there indeed are some nice one's. Here is another one, a cover of an old song from the same writer as Feel like going home, in a quite unusal line-up (including Marcus Cliffe I believe) .
So much like Mark's guitar fills, which are all over the song, real nice sounding tasty blues licks, imho far better than what he brought to the table with his attemps at blues songs on his own solo albums. The BB King influence MK sometimes talks about seems pretty obvious here.

It's such a good song it's hard to do a bad version of it. But at the same time I really can't see the point in listening to a cover when you could spend your time listening to the great Charlie Rich singing it.

I always found it funny when the people in the comment section for Mark's version of "Raglan Road" had fierce battles about whether his version is any good, and how it's miles behind The Dubliners/Luke Kelly version as if it's a sin to have different versions. I think Mark just channelled Van Morrison in his version as they are almost identical.

Abolutely! I love the lyrics, too - it's on a par with "In the Air Tonight". "One day I'll get my very dirty revenge on you..." ;-)
One of the best albums ever made, imho.

I never saw MK as a Blues Guitar Hero (he isn't)
He can play it for sure.
However, there are some variations that MK really shines.

Actually came here to post Congo Square, but was beaten to it, so I'll go with Thomas Dolby's 17 Hills: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ad9K30AlfSg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ad9K30AlfSg)
I also enjoy this discussion by Thomas Dolby about getting Mark's part recorded. I posted this link on Guy's website once and asked if much of Mark's work is comped this heavily, but he deleted it:
