Title: Guitarist Magazine (UK—May ‘24)
Post by: TommyJ88 on April 02, 2024, 10:11:29 AM

I just picked up the latest issue of Guitarist magazine, and there’s a fantastic 14 page cover feature on Mark. Lots of really great new images, and a nice new interview. Quite a bit of it is about his guitars (the recent auction is mentioned, along with which guitars he chose not to sell) as well as the new album, the new EP and also the Going Home charity single.

So this is just a heads up for those in the UK—it’s definitely worth getting (there’s also a fantastic feature on Vince Gill, for those interested).

I’ll probably post the individual pages later for those outside of the UK who can’t buy a copy.

EDIT: As this is no longer for sale, I’ve made a PDF available here:

I am just on the way of leaving the UK after spending some days here and was looking for that magazine at every Airport shop, nothing here.
Then I saw this post and feel in heaven after reading everything.
Thank you!

Thanks so much for posting this!

It's sad that he's no longer touring, but it seems to have given him a lot more time to reflect on his work and give interviews. A big upside.

Thanks from Rome!!
The best answer is a question itself: What does it mean to you? (re. the album title)
Quintessential Knopfler :-)

Guys, I really hate to be a party pooper but after consulting fellow editors I have removed the article - for now.

One, we want to protect the forum from the threat of any legal issues coming from copyright infringement.

Two, I think we need to be fair to the individuals involved in producing this magazine to try to sell as many copies as possible.

Once the magazine is no longer available we can revisit but hopefully everyone understands in the meantime.

Fair enough. I was very much in two minds about posting it, I just wanted fans not in the UK to enjoy the article.

Nothing really new there apart from photos anyway, but it was a very well-written piece from somebody who clearly did his homework before talking with MK. Overall, the magazine is worth buying. Not the first time they had a good Knopfler cover story.

MKNews:

The May 24 edition of Guitarist magazine contains a fascinating must read interview in which Mark talks about his “rusty” guitar playing, approach to writing lyrics and recording songs, and about some of the guitars he did not include inn the recent Christie’s auction.

I don't buy this "rusty" talk. That he's been so obsessed with songs and lyrics that he hasn't had the time to sit down and noodle for 30 minutes a day? Not even during the pandemic? Come on ...

Yes. Our Editors did. Dusty explained why.

Good to know! In all seriousness it's good to support this magazine, they do a great job and so many magazines have closed down already.

Hello, my name is Heike, I'm a long time reader here. Maybe I can help here...

If you go to their website and look for the online store. There you can subscribe or order single issues. I did, mine is already on the way. I am in Germany, so this works for a lot of you, I suppose!

Hello Heike!

Greetings from another (Northern) German! Where are you located if you don't mind? Have you been to any concerts?

Thanks for the welcome! 😊 I'm located in the west, half way between Frankfurt and Cologne.
I started going to concerts in 1991, have seen lots of them since, and enjoyed every minute. I came too love this music with Sultans. Heard it on ma car radio when it was brand new... 😁

Interesting he changed the pickups in his signature Stratocaster

Just picked up a copy and yes, he had Callahan pick ups fitted to his 2008 Sig Strat. It is used a lot on ODR

That he chose the Texas Special pickups to begin with is total mystery to me. I have no first-hand experience with them, but most recordings I've heard have sounded harsh. I also have a friend with a big collection of nice new and vintage guitars, including an original MK signature Strat. He says the same thing.

They sell the Texas specials as being a bit "fatter" & more powerful than the standard Strat pickups but not so much that you can't still get clean tones with them. They just have a bit of an "edge".
I've got a Tonerider pure vintage set in my 80's MIJ Strat and they are much cleaner than the Texas Specials. (and sweeter than the ceramic pickups that came in it). I tend to use this guitar for early DS tones.
