Title: (16) What I’m gonna need
Post by: Jules on January 30, 2024, 12:00:12 PM
What I’m Gonna Need   2:52

Say, is that a saxophone?

Say, that badge, the gold one, in your lapel
that a bunch of grapes, right?
wine's a thing
hey you guess how I could tell.

Hey, it's nice, Mallorca, and the hotel,
that's a part of Spain, right?
You're from Spain, alright?

Golf is the game we're here to play
I've been hitting at a mother* down the old fairway
all freakin' day

Originally Memphis, that's nice
so you're from around here, all right?

Say, what's your name, man? Alejandro
that works for me I guess
nonethless
don't hear it much in Tenessee.

Hey, Alejandro, what I'm gonna need
is a cold, crisp, dry white wine
can you do that for me?

I'm not very sure if we can call this a song, LOL

Thinking about the "lyrics" it reminds me to "Badges, posters, stickers and t-shirts" as this seems to be more a conversation with background music than a proper song, but I find it very fine, as one of the friends of my usual gang for concerts is called Alejandro, so yo can guess jokes has been flying these days, LOL

Bizarre song.  Result of writing tunes after a couple of bottles of vino.  Sounds like he's talking to someone at the bar when he's drunk.  The albums My Parties and that's insulting My Parties.

I think it's a character story, that reminds me of "Bacon Roll", in the sense that you can listen to it like a conversation, but it's showing you an unflattering side of the character.

Seems to be about a guy from Memphis in a golf resort, and I assume he's talking to the waiter (Alejandro, a Spanish guy from Mallorca), complaining about the day, showing off how clever he is, being somewhat patronising and ordering a glass of wine.

These are the lyrics as far as I can understand

Say, is that a saxophone?

Say, that badge, the gold one, in your lapel

About Trump voters, the sort of ignorant rich Americans in a Golf cart being proud and feeling superior to know that Majorca is a part of Spain. I find it amusing that this one is so heavily rejected around here onviously only because the lyrics come across unusual? It's a mean dark song and a very good one. Also listen to the guitar solo. Give it a (second) try.

I haven't heard What I'm Gonna Need yet, but the lyrics reminds of Can I Smoke In Here? by Ry Cooder (again  ;D ):

"Can I Smoke In Here?"

Can I smoke in here can I sit down
Am I bothering you are you alone
Is my tie on straight do you rate me polite
Do I need a shave do I seem all right

Names don't matter mine's Kash Buk no it's true
Go ahead laugh it's good for you
What's that you're drinking I like your smile you know
Hey mister bartender please don't be so slow
I think we got a lot in common
That's my brand wouldn't trade it for the World
We're about the same age on the outside
Inside I'm a thousand years old

Is this your room I can't do 60 like once I could
Bet you didn't know I was that hot
You didn't know I was that good
You got nothing to fear can I smoke in here

Steel player friend of mine lived right down the half
These walls are thin nobody heard him fall
Last of the best without a shadow a doubt
Hi-Lo shag's the last thing he saw before it all faded out

What's that you say 'life is like a low budget movie'
Slow down there honey' you lost me that time
'We all took less then it closed'
Truest thing you said all night that's a laugh
You can write it on my epitaph

See you in Heaven or next time which ever's first
I ain't USDA prime God knows you seen worse
Just tell Saint Peter at the Golden Gate
I won't be late but let me get it straight
Can I get a beer can I smoke in here

Don’t know that one.

What I would say is, when it comes to wring Randy Newman type songs, MK ain’t no Randy Newman.

That song is from Cooder's 'I, Flathead' album. The third in his brilliant California trilogy. Quirky stuff, but it works because of the context.

Well, no sorry needed, you and dmg seem to be part of a surprisingly small group of people who don't have much pleasure with the new album. That's perfectly fine with me but I stay with my description about the song and all I can do is shrug my shoulders in pity. Most songs on DTRW are worse than this one from my point of view.

It is part of the fun and also very astonishing how different many songs are discussed. But there is no right or wrong of course. I find this song unusual, yes, maybe even strange, but very good and original. I must admit I haven't had too much time today and yesterday and was just flying over the many posts. If my impression about both of you was wrong, I apologize.

I didn't doubt that you have all tracks.

I bought the blu-ray but as previously mentioned was holding off on buying the box so have "obtained" the vinyl bonus tracks.

I haven't heard any bad reports about the vinyl quality of the box yet so looks like I will be getting it.

Early start on Saturday to try to obtain The Boy.

I had ordered the Box weeks ago at a Dutch retailer Dutchessy had recommended, but he said he didn't get the Box last friday. So I cancelled and now ordered at bravado.de which I had reservations about but today they mailed me that my order is about to get shipped. 105 Euro incl. shipping. I hope to get the box this week.
The vinyl bonus tracks are available here at AMIT in good quality.

Here in Scotland at least it's not necessarily just a posh game.

My band played a gig at a golf club recently. It was in a very working class area and the members were all goo, down to earth ordinary people. It made me really happy that there was somewhere for these people to play the sport they love (I don't play golf myself). The local council also runs several courses where anyone can play and the costs are reasonable.

The last one of from these sessions I've listened to – now I've finally caught up with everybody.  ;)

The song isn't exactly Telegraph Road, indeed, and quite obviously not something they would ever have considered putting on the album. But in a strange way, I'm enjoying it a lot. It's very unambitious, musically and lyrically, but I find it intriguing because Mark has this talent for painting "mixed characters" – people whom you dislike, but, at the same time, find yourself identifying with. I'm not from Memphis, I hate golf, I do know that Mallorca is a part of Spain (even though Mallorcans speak their own language and many of them would prefer to be independent or part of Catalonia) – but I do love a cold, crisp, dry white wine and I understand how this guy just tries to be friendly and can't help but talk down to the bartender. I've been in similar situations, and probably many of us have been (and I've worked as a bartender myself, so I know the other side, too). I really like the way how Mark doesn't judge his characters, but just portrays them with a few sketches. I only know a handful of Randy Newman's songs, and based on that, think that the comparison only goes so far, but I do think Mark generally does a great job with his "character" songs.

By the way, did you notice how Greg Leisz accentuates "Tennesseeae" with his pedal steel? Brilliant. Beautiful playing by him and Mark throughout the song.

Why do you think so?

Sounds convincing to me as well.
The guy (not Robson, but the guy in the song!) is a bit limited but thinks he's very smart because he knows what the grapes badge means and because he knows where Mallorca is.
He's clearly American, from Tennessee (southern states), plays golf, like Don T.
He doesn't seem to know a lot of Spanish-speaking people (who might be called Alejandro) in his own state, although there is quite a large group of Latinos there.
He treats Alejandro as a waiter, although he's maybe a tourist / guest like him, because in his world, Spanish people are Latinos, and Latinos are staff, not guests.
I'm not sure if this makes any sense, and I'm still looking for some hidden meanings.

I wrote about it somewhere on the forum, but I stand by my opinion, it's a good song, I particularly like the arrangements, it's the music in the first place that really appealed to me, then the lyrics, I admit that everyone can interpret them in their own way, but I agree with Rail King and Stratmad, it takes us once again to South America, these southerners who think they're the kings of the universe.

Businesses award lapel pins to employees to boost employee morale, productivity, and employee engagement.

Proverbs 22:2 The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the maker of them all.
The rich and poor meet together
In an hostile way, as some; they rush upon one another; the rich despise the poor, and the poor envy the rich; they cannot speak well one of another, as the Arabic version; or they are dependent on one another, they cannot do without each other; as in the natural body one member cannot say to another, I have no need of thee; so, in the body politic, the rich and the poor cannot say they have no need of one another; the rich stand in need of the poor to till their land, to plough and sow, and do all other servile works for them; and the poor have need of the rich to employ them; have need of their money as their wages for their work, to support themselves and families with: or they sometimes change conditions, and so meet; the poor grow rich, and the rich become poor; the one goes uphill and the other downhill, and so meet in their passage. They meet together in all places of the earth; go where you will, there are rich and poor. The godly rich and poor meet together in one place to worship God; they meet together in a Gospel church state, enjoying the same privileges and ordinances; and will all meet the Lord, and all meet together at his judgment seat; and they will meet in heaven, and be together to all eternity, where the distinction will cease: and the wicked rich and poor meet together to commit sin; and they meet together in the grave F17, where there is no difference; and they will meet at the bar of God at the last day, and in hell, where they will be together for evermore; the Lord [is] the Maker of them all:
not only as men, but as rich men and poor men; God gives riches to whom he pleases, and poverty to whom he pleases; riches and poverty are according to the order of divine Providence; and he can and does change scenes at his pleasure; wherefore the rich should consider themselves as dependent on him, and not despise and crush the poor; and the poor should be content with their state, as being allotted to them by the Lord, who can alter it when he thinks fit.

When it comes to Gold Grapes Lapel Pin it proves the qualification of a sommelier, in this case one of a North American origin.
The North American Sommelier Association was founded in 2006 and is the official representative in the United States and Canada of the Worldwide Sommelier Association (WSA). Its Certified Sommelier course is divided into three phases but is offered as one entire course and includes extensive class time, lectures, educational visits to wineries, and educational dinners. Unlike other groups, NASA has only two tiers of Sommelier qualification: Silver-Pin and Gold-Pin. The Gold-Pin qualification is obtained through a series of extensive requirements and certifications (Master Wine Taster, Master Of Service...) as well as proof of experience in the industry.
source:

The Tennessean guy is about that smart that he tries to sell fake interest in getting to know the person and then a minute in the conversation he forgot the guy's name and has no interest in talking any longer. All he does from the start is just to show off and brag about himself. He is seflsufficient, he was never intrested in real conversation actually. He has just needed a glass of wine:

Your name, man? Alejandro?
That works for me, I guess
(the guy just told him his name)
Nonetheless
Don't hear it much in Tennessee

Maybe has something to do with the badge of the grapes? I don't totally get that reference, but the one from Tennesse, that one sounds more clear for me.

It's a very terrible song, specially when it comes to the lyrics, the music is quite nice and in my opinion is wasted with such lyrics.
