What do we think about the new EP? I think it will contain 4, 5, or 6 songs. anymore and it can really be an album, also, do we think this could be rush released? before the album? maybe a digital and CD only thing to get around waiting for the Vinyl delay.
-
When was the last time he released an EP? DancEPlay? It's definitely an experimental thing, so I'm actually hyped about that.
Mark is fixing his mistake when he should've released a blues EP separately from regular album in Privateering times.
-
We don't know if the EP will be a separate album. Maybe these will be additional songs, like for example on the Tracker album. Or maybe it will be a bonus album like on Get Lucky or Privateering and Down The Road Wherever.

Bonus disc is still a part of an album, it's not an EP. But either way, it's really better to separate some tunes rather than put everything on a double/triple album.

Yes you are right. If the EP is only 4 songs? I want more!!!! :)

The Trawlerman’s Song EP in 2005.

Good point, but it wasn't new material:)

It's debatable. You can find interviews around the release of Privateering where Mark expressed he thought of releasing a blues album separately, but ended up putting all eggs in one basket. I guess, the idea of releasing a first double album was too tempting. So as usual on this forum, I'm not pulling info out of my butt, but base my opinions on facts and interviews.
Imagine the new album comes out, and it's Mark's first triple album with 42 songs, blues numbers, soundtrack numbers, nursery rhymes or whatever, 15 bonus tracks, everything's completely random taking up 8 LPs, and costs like an aeroplane. Who asked for this? I think it's a much better idea to organise it a little bit.
-
I know where you coming from but he can do as he wishes to do. Using the word "mistake" implies that there could be a "right" way to do it. It's all possibilities but not right or wrong. I love Privateering exactly as it is and the blues songs open new horizons and make it more open. So am I wrong?
LE
-
I think it is clear that this will be an EP of all new songs, I am looking forward to whatever is on it.
-

LE
There's no "wrong" in art of course. I hate this word. There are, however, strange anomalies like too many bonus tracks, great songs "downgraded" to bonus tracks, bonus tracks for some countries, or releasing a more expensive and longer double album for whatever reason.
My opinion was, that since Mark's blues is almost a genre on its own (Mark has a very unique take on blues), it would be great to have it on an EP rather than shelved among other songs. You don't need me to know Mark's blues songs get fewer listens than his non-blues ones (2, 3 fold and up).
I love Privateering for what it is also, I don't have a choice, but in a parallel universe, where this idea materialised, that would be great.
-
I think it is clear that this will be an EP of all new songs, I am looking forward to whatever is on it.
The question is when will it be released? On the same day as the album? Sooner or later?
-
It seems like it would be sooner than the album release otherwise it would might as well be part of the album.

What always puzzled me more than the inclusion of these blues songs on Privateering was the exclusion of Follow the Ribbon. If THAT isn't a perfect album closer, what in the world is?

The CD did, but it's standard for films to have small cues, tiny snippets of music, that don't end up on a soundtrack album.

Yes. For example A Shot at Glory.
-

in the vinyl days yes, but today, EP doesn't really mean such a number of songs imho
some current EPs released nowadays have 5, 6, 7 or even 8 songs
I think that labels begin to talk about "albums " when you have 10 songs (with average lenghts of course)

That's true. EP ExtendedanceEPlay was only available on vinyl at first and I remember it well. I also called the EP Comfort And Joy MK (three compositions) :)
-
Definitions of an EP all came from the vinyl era. Three songs would make a maxi Single, from 4 tracks on it was indeed called an EP. The term "EP" alone shows that MK thinks more in terms of the vinyl releases of his younger years. He mentioned those old EP's he still has on his mantlepiece. Of course in digital times the EP lost its relevance. The What it is Single would have been a real EP if it had been released on vinyl and on it's own. In 2000, those 4 tracks were just a "single".

I'm predicting 5x new songs and those that couldn't get on the new album...

Indeed it does go back to Vinyl days LE, in fact I've got a fine collection of The Shadows EP's or 'Extended Plays' all consisting of 4-5 tunes.
-
Very nice. MK's first record was a Donnie Lonegan EP which he still has on his mantlepiece. There is something about this release form that attracts me very much. In earlier days they just released them much quicker and didn't need to have a 6-year-gap from the last release. Maybe MK discovers that it would be nice to release more EP's. With touring done, an album release incl. Tour shouldn't spend two or three years time anymore. An album/mini album/EP every year would keep the Get-a-Lifers happy!

Yes. Nick Lowe just releases EPs these days.

The Mark Knopfler of the 2020's will not release an EP with only 4 tracks.
He will LOL about that.
When I think of an EP of MK it has a duration of approx. 25-30 Minutes
A single has 3-4 tracks. An EP maybe 4-8 songs. Depends on the length of each song.
in the End it will be as long as the WTD EP. Just my guess.
So 2024 I see a MK album full with songs plus Bonus tracks plus later a Bonus EP with another batch of tracks.
Maybe different style from the Original album. Sax and trumpet
-
Kind of makes sense now he assembled the 2019 tour band...maybe it was for this project

Yes, or Extended Play. For me, it's the same
-
The format "EP" (Extended-Play record) came from the old days of vinyl-production. Best examples are vintage EP-Singles of the 1950s and 1960s by Elvis, Beatles, Stones and other Rock-n-Roll or Beat-Artists. Format was in all cases a 7-inch record pressed with 2 Tracks on each side, sometimes with 3 Tracks on each side. In the past, the EP-Single was a technical novum with a much longer duration on each side. The term "EP-single" found its way in the record-collectors community till today. :think
OK, i´m of the opinion, that Marks new album will be released in different forms: a Standard-CD-Album, a Deluxe-CD-Album filled with bonus-songs or with a bonus-disc, a BOX-Set with Vinyl-records, CDs, DVD or EP-Discs or something like that, or a seperate Vinyl-variant 2-LP-Set is also possible, maybe a single vinyl EP-disc with the 3-6 Tracks on it, on the 7-inch, 10-inch or 12-inch format. Everything or nothing is possible. Let´s wait for it. 8)

Would be interesting to see how such an album would look, with the current songs.
-
Regarding "Privateering", is true that mixing the songs makes it more wide in musical terms, but artistically, put the blues songs apart in a blues record it would had been nice too.
I think that the only reason we are having a cd and an ep for the new recording songs is that MK thought the new songs were good enough but he already had the cd mastered and didn't want to redo it again, so kept the cd mastered and decided to release those extra songs apart.
Let's see if he release both things at the same time or maybe as LE suggested, the EP waits to the Record Store Day, which I hope he doesn't, as that is November, I think...
-
Isn't it April? I thought of it because April would fit so well.
LE
-
I've kind of got bored with record store day now.
A good idea but they are scraping the barrel a bit now and releasing stuff that isn't really very appealing.
Metroland is a good example, you can buy brand new copies here for £10 and under. Encores sells on ebay for not much more.
-
Yes i agree. For the first two or three times, the record-store day concept was pretty good, if there are some really interesting releases. Today it is more a commercialized thing with the re-releases of well known albums, maxis or single-records. Much of such record-store-day stuff is seen on the online-marketplaces for ridiculous prices. So the philosophy of RSD is not more given currently. :think
-
The Honky Tonk Demos - It was something wonderful.
They should release the ExtendeDancEPlay EP or "Comfor And Joy" Or, for example What It Is single in a Mexican version :D
-
Honky Tonk Demos was great yes but that was a while ago now.
You can still pick up original Extended Dance Plays for next to nothing. Now that Live and the BBC and On The Night are available in the box there's not much that isn't easy to get on vinyl. Maybe ATRR.
-
Yes, the original Extended-Play record by Dire straits on all known formats, 7-inch single with 3-Tracks, 12-inch single with 3 or 4 tracks are easily to get, also in pristine condition. So that record makes no sense to be a further RSD-release. Comfort and Joy 3-track maxi-single was released in UK, Netherlands, Spain and as a special 6-track variant in Argentina with Extended Play on B-side. For that record you will need a little patience to get a great copy, but it is also possible. For some vinyl-maniacs, incl. me, there are some examples, like Wag the Dog as vinyl-variant, A shot at glory as vinyl, Altamira as vinyl-variant, a new edition of Mark Knopfler with Emmylou Harris, will be great, too. Don´t forget the Dire Straits-side project "K Wallis B and the dark shades of night". There are two UK-only releases known in 1987, a 7-inch single and a 12-inch maxi-single. So that are my personal ideas for some new releases on vinyl. 8)

Just came across something interesting in the Record Store Day list for 2024. A 12” vinyl release from Mark entitled ‘The Boy’…

Making it vinyl exclusive would be ridiculous. I hope it's just one of the available options.

Now it is offical from MK newsletter

4 track EP

Oh boy... I hope they won't forget to announce the release of the Hansen movie somewhere in April as well, then Mark will create a black hole and destroy the planet :lol

I have to admit I wasn't excited by the prospect of yet another boxing themed tune/tunes. Something I'm totally not interested or in favour of.
Town Moor was mentioned in the intro of the TOL versions played at Wembley in 1985, maybe a few others early in the BIA tour too.

I like how they are open about this being B-sides crammed into a separate release. Honestly, I like this idea more than just bonus tracks on whatever edition.
However, they have 5 bonus tracks on the Deluxe Edition and 4 more bonus tracks on the Box Set edition. So 13 songs in total out of 26 new songs Mark will release in the following months, are bonus tracks. Let that sink in. So it's basically like 2 whole albums somehow were transformed into this marketing monstrosity. Half of the songs are bonus tracks. HALF!
UPD: Oh no, actually there are more bonus tracks as I counted "Going Home" as a new song. So 25 new songs, 13 of which are bonuses.
-
I don't buy vinyl anymore.
Hey, the last vinyl I bough was The Honky Tonk Demos and is still wrapped.
And this release was a bit of a problem because I like music so much more than collecting records.
A digital format was all I wanted to buy to listen to.

Well my record player is able to transform the vinyl tracks to digital format ;D

8 of which will only be issued as vinyl and I don't have a player so it's not a present fors fans it's a present for fans with record players...

Quite a season of steady releases! DS live boxset, charity single, new album & now RSD support with an original EP!
As Quizz has said in the past, most other artists are good at releasing stuff new & old, this is new territory for Knop fans I think.Maybe next Christmas, DS studio outtakes and unreleased gems? :)

Thank you. I knew one of the links said it's 4 bonus tracks from the upcoming album and were recorded in the sessions for the new album. I'm not making stuff up, remember folks? Tho the fact it's bonus tracks is obvious even without any copy, to be honest :lol
-
Indeed, remember they made an own extra session for it? If I remember correctly, the two Brass boys would be playing on this one then?
Mr. Solomons Said, this title sounds like a track from Lightnin' Hopkins, like an ancient talking blues.
In Germany in the 80's there was a boxing family on the Fairgrounds called the "Schlüter Truppe". They had two "sons", Schlüter Junior 1 and Schlüter Junior 2 who looked like Elvis, and they were boxing with guys from the audience, drunken ones most of the time and they attracted always the biggest crowds. Loved to watch the whole Show as a kid and still remember the exact place where it all took place. I am very thrilled by this EP. It's am absolute MK-like theme.

Yeah, it's something new indeed. However, the sloppiness of it is quite reMARKable. Spend 6 years with no releases, then drop everything you've got in 6 months. The thing you can be afraid of here is — does this mean years and years of silence after all this or a beginning of something good, like a new release of stuff each year.

Well, to me, this is literally a real bonus. I can understand that MK separated it when really all four tracks are about boxing. It's just natural. Drovers Road was called a bonus song, too, so it's nonsense to judge these songs with terms like "b-sides".

Once you start to read about boxers or watch movies about boxers you realise EXACTLY why Mark is so into that. Interesting lives, drama, entertainment, broken hearts and broken bones, the physical aspect of it. Boxing has everything, and that's why it's one of the topics all writers return to.

LE
It's just a term, like "B-roll" in filmmaking. No matter how good the song is, it's still intended to be an addition to something bigger. To me, the sin of bonus tracks is they are simply destined to be less prominent. Of course, Mark himself can think these songs deserve this fate, but as we all know there are some damn good B-sides.
-
Does anyone in the UK know how you order it? My nearest record shop is 25 miles away.
-
There are different Record Store Day formats. The Boy is an "Exclusive" which means that it ONLY can be bought in record stores. Other formats are intended to be made available afterwards but with Exclusives, it's not. So no order possible. However, this is the official meaning. You can still buy many RSD editions from the last years, not only from 2023, and The Honky Tonk Demos were available from Amazon later. Just keep in mind that vinyl is booming and that RSD 2024 could be increasing in demand compared to other years.

LE
Thanks LE, looks like I need to order instore and pick up when released.
I believe you can’t actually order RSD releases…

You can order them online from the shops that sells in Amazon or discogs, but just some days after the RSD days.
I bought the previous DS and MK rsd releases that way.

I don’t think that’s possible unfortunately. It would defeat the object of the event. You have to go in store and buy Record Store Day releases on the day. You have to be up at sparrow’s fart to get in the queue at your nearest record store and hope they still have the item(s) you want in stock. Inconvenient, I know. Especially when your nearest store is some distance away.
-
If you insist. I bet there will be others much faster with this stuff but it's an option, of course.

For what I read in your posts, I understand you have a good equipment so maybe your file would be worth of quality, and also, you know you are going to enjoy it, lol

We should work out something to make safe that every Get-A-Lifer who wants a copy is able to get one. There are people maybe in big towns with many stores and others who have to drive one hour. (Like me). I will try to get one however. Also not sure if sales are limited for one person.

He is doing so since Shangri-La and the first "real" Box Set that featured the vinyl edition was Get Lucky 15 years ago.

"Mark Knopfler’s The Boy is a 12” EP featuring four brand-new tracks released exclusively for Record Store Day 2024– something extra special Mark wanted to give to fans whilst supporting local record stores! The tracks revolve around boxing and fairground boxing booths where members of the public could take on a professional fighter – if they lasted three rounds, they got paid!"

The question is how many copies are pressed ?
I think that a Mark Knopfler EP will not be the most sought after record of the RSD unless it is kind of 500 copies only run.

Great to see more new material coming out.
It reminds me when Privateering was coming with 20+ new songs.
Now with the new album plus bonus tracks and this EP it’s almost the same.
Looking forward to hear all these new songs

So...will this be available to stream, do you think?

I'm gonna feed the MK fans worlwide from facebook...
Looks weird that this EP is that short, just four songs, when you think MK brought Richard Bennett and Glenn Worf from the USA in purpose, just for four tracks, we know how good they are and how fast goes everything so I don't think they would spend more than two days to record their parts, probably they needed just one day.
We know they are friends but they are session musicians that would lost days of works in the US travelling from the USA to London and back, so it seems rare to me to bring them just for four tracks, maybe they recorded more stuff that is going to remains unreleased?
-
I've just heard from a reliable source that 'The Boy' may well be available on CD too.....
-
Making it vinyl exclusive would be ridiculous. I hope it's just one of the available options.
Well, that's the idea of RSD.
LE
There have been CD editions for RSD as well, albeit rarely. I have the "Live at Massey Hall" CD by Tears for Fears.
My thought immediately went to the TCT project, with just one track on a CD, and this project might not have a CD at all. As a fan, I would've preferred the TCT CD to include those four tracks as a bonus, even if they - artistically speaking - probably wouldn't have fit together all that well.
Hopefully there's a download option at least.
-
I've just heard from a reliable source that 'The Boy' may well be available on CD too.....
That would be very good news! :clap

3,000 is not a lot of copies worldwide. Look how quick the audio bluray sold out.

I imagine that there will eventually be a digital edition of the EP available generally. It seems unlikely a 12” vinyl edition of 3000 copies for Record Store Day would be the only means of getting hold of original MK songs. For instance, Paul McCartney’s Home Tonight / In a Hurry double A-side single was released digitally a week before the 7” picture disc which was an RSD Black Friday exclusive. It stands the reason the EP will become more widely available in one format or another.
-

Only when I acquired whether my friend would be stocking the EP on RSD, he asked me what format? CD or Vinyl - both was my reply!

What a nice idea to release four songs with a common theme as an EP! It'll be like a mini album, and I love albums that have a common theme (and style). I'd caution you not to expect something too punchy, though. I wouldn't be surprised if a song like "The Boy" would have echoes of "The Boxer".
As for the the "B-sides" label, I'm just glad we get to hear his new songs. True, some great bonus tracks have been left off albums in the past (how in the world can you NOT make "Follow the Ribbon" the closing track of Privateering?!). But as long as the album makes sense as it is and makes for a well-rounded listening experience, I don't care that much.
Also, don't worry about not getting access to some of the new songs. They'll all end up on the internet shortly. Everything does, for everyone and for free.
-
Oh, boy! :P
The world is getting a lot of Mark Knopfler these days. Getting close to overexposure.

Overexposure is impossible. There is no such thing as an overdose of MK music.

It seems like they use a tombolo to decide what songs go on the album and what ends up elsewhere. But either way 25 new tracks for 2024 is great news. :)

I think this is fantastic news, Mark has given so much this year already, we are being spoiled, we will get a digital or CD release of this later in the year I expect, this sounds like it could be a mini concept album from Mark :)

LOL
Actually it seems that with the "Deep river" record already closed, MK wrote those songs and wated to release them as soon as he could, for any reason. He could had left them for a future record but he wanted the band back and record them for an EP to be released just days after the main record...

The EP is inspired by Mark’s childhood captivation with the giant funfair held every year on Newcastle Town Moor.
The four songs connect themes of the fairgrounds and their boxing booths commonplace in the Britain of the 50s and early 60s.
I wonder if these previews can tell us anything about the musical style of these 4 songs.
-
They added a little quote from MK:
The Boy EP by Mark Knopfler is a collection of thematically linked songs which came together during the process of writing his forthcoming album, One Deep River. Inspired by the annual traveling funfair Knopfler was enchanted by as a child in Newcastle, he used to visit every time they came to town: ‘These are things that figured big in my childhood. I just found it fascinating. I remember that there used to be boxing booths all over the country, we had hundreds of them actually, believe it or not.’

Don't know if anyone has already posted the tracklist of The Boy. Went quickly through the pages of Amit, but didn't see the tracklist. I also don't see the song Mr. Solomons Said in the overview thread list of One Deep River / The Boy. So just in case this are the songs on The Boy:

...... Don´t forget the Dire Straits-side project "K Wallis B and the dark shades of night". There are two UK-only releases known in 1987, a 7-inch single and a 12-inch maxi-single. So that are my personal ideas for some new releases on vinyl. 8)
Thank you for mentioning this, I never heard of it before....it's a nice instrumental (called "Diamonds")

I am sure we will be able to get this EP on digital and CD but it will be after the RSD so they can get the sales for that.

The RSD Demos EP wasn't on CD later on

True, but these are new songs, partly promoting a new album. I would be amazed if we don't have it released on other formats.
-
I don't see any connection with the new album. In fact, these four songs were seperated from the album as they made a theme of it's own. I guess it was decided on short term and it is a coincidence that both is released in April. Of course there are wanted synergies but that's it. I guess they will make it available digital via markknopfler.com later or so but I wouldn't bet on a CD release.

I'm very curious about the songs on the EP. "The Boy" Thematically they will be related to each other, but I wonder if the sound of these songs will be the same.
-
Just found something interesting on a Facebook group I'm in concerning Edinburgh, not Newcastle, but the idea is the same. On the site today is a telephone exchange, however this fascinating photo exists of a boxing booth itself.
"What was on this site previously was an open area for Carnivals, Fairgrounds, Boxing Booths and many other types of entertainment. The Boxing Booths were a source of income for many unemployed men who were brave enough to take on the professional boxers as a challenge. There was also exhibition boxing matches some featuring the well known Leith boxer Tansy Lee and the renowned Paddy Fee."

The idea is in fact new to me.
In the end it means that the fans who really want a copy will either have to hope and pray to find a copy, or pay extortionate prices on e-bay later. I suppose there are way more than 3,000 MK fans world-wide who will want a copy, so there's no reason to limit it like that.

The RSD day releases are usually distributed and pre-ordered through the company of the artist. In the shop I work, we have been asked to pre-order the 12'', once, in early March. Since Mercury is under Universal, and Universal has a 70% of music sales in many territories of the world, the available stock is distributed in a first come first served basis, but from previous experience, I know that they also try to somehow send everywhere, even if this means less copies than the ones ordered. The important thing is this: there was a disclaimer, as with all RSD: that we can only order once, available quantities can not be guaranteed. This creates the feeling of being limited, but may I remind you that in the previous RSD, the releases by DS, (the double Charlie Gillett 7', Love over gold half speed, Encores colour, etc) were available more than a year after, at reduced prices and at big online shops like Amazon. I think that they got this lesson and I believe that even the new box set will eventually show up later on, maybe at a reduced price, once they get the desperate ones, like us, to pre order at full price... :-\ Because we do not dare think that we will miss out... FOMO at full play!
If the local Universal partner has more copies available in stock, I will try to order after the RSD and let you know, in case someone is still interested.
-
Hopefully some of us will get to hear some of these tunes this afternoon in London?

Metroland was definitely over produced, you can buy it for next to nothing now.
Still, given the exclusive nature of these tracks, 5,000 (I think?) copies worldwide sounds like too few.

My very weak guess is that the song we heard today at London was called The Boy from the EP. And that Solid rock synth is coming possibly from that intro. Very nice song!

It was All Comers actually. It’s Celtic sounding and a bit of a rocker. Part of the intro can be heard in one of those EPK videos.
If All Comers was on One Deep River, it would be one of the best tracks (for me, maybe the best track) on the album. I’ve listened to my recording on repeat and can’t get enough of it.

I agree! However, it would not fit the style of the album perfectly. I like that a bit up-tempo songs of MK and his singing style on those.

Yeah, it sounded absolutely amazing!

Had a first listen via a recording of today and I’m really, REALLY impressed. Sound quality is obviously not great when listening trough a mobile phone speaker but hey: who cares? Does remind me of What it is, same killer atmosphere, absolutely fantastic! If ODR album is your thing, this will probably be on top of that!

Yes, I also kind of referred to that Tunnel of love/What it is style. It absolutely does not sound like those, but it is more like that Mark's faster singing style. This is something like Border reiver meets Yon two crows :think

I was also able to listen to it and it is absolutely great. It has a Strat solo like in WII or Sultans (soundwise) and is indeed similar with What It Is. There is that silent part as in WII which is followed by a build up and a great playing out. Absolute great shanty like backing vocals by the boys and overall energetic vocals by Mark. It is beyond me why they decided to NOT put this onto the album!! It is exactly the killer Song everybody dreams of and it would fit perfectly well.

Then we are some lucky devils. Though into vinyl, I really hope for later digital versions of the EP to create my own album running order. This one definitely belongs to it as TOTT to Tracker.

I was not expecting a slower interlude like What It Is which sped up into a classic red strat solo. What a track 'All Comers' is.

Likewise, the way it starts and then bursts into life is brilliant. Beautiful sound from the MK Strat!!
-
Mix of What it Is and Border Reiver. It sounded so fantastic in the cinema. And now we know the 2nd part of the first EPK. I think they planned this for the main album (hence the videoclip and EPK) and moved it eventually to the EP.

Bloody hell.....can't wait to hear this....somehow, sometime....the talk here has certainly whetted my appetite!

If someone wants to send me the recording of All Comers, I’ll compare it to the one I made with my little Tascam recorder & mic and I’ll share/send you my recording if it’s noticeably better.

Maybe this was planned as a main single, at least it could have been. I first said that it doesn't sound like What it is, but indeed the guitar solo part has some of that kind of feeling. I love the new album, but this song is super super nice! It was even a bit emotional to hear the intro and then the song bursted going.

MR SOLOMONS SAID
One day Mr Solomons said
There was a little black cloud over your head
Anyway you’ve received a threat
Or so he understands
I’m a country lad but I see it too
How much it’s got to you
And now you’re slipping down
Into the shadowlands
My life’s the fighting game
I keep my cool, I stay the same
We never mind how bad it is
In fact we like all your
Showbiz shenanigans
And Jack wants to help you out
Is what it’s all about
With Mr Solomons
We like the flashbulbs, pop, pop, pop
All the razzamatazz
We like the big nights, the West End lights
And all of that jazz
And you can bet
Jack is never going back
To Frying Pan Alley
You can bet Jack is never going back
To Frying Pan Alley
He signed me as a prospect, see
Then something let go in my knee
But I’m no clapped out punchateer
Like some of the other ones
Promoting’s all about the gate
Information’s worth its weight
I’m the eyes and ears and it’s great
With Mr Solomons
Daytimes I’ll make the rounds
In every caff and every pub In this part of town
There’s a mug or a pug
And always someone blathering
It’s gossip calypso all day long
Who’s the money going on
Who’s been training wrong
Got hurt or struggling
Well I might have a couple with a cornerman
The one with the sponge and bucket
I’ve maybe got a bottle for a club doorman
Tickets for a waitress in my pocket
She said ‘It’s me or the ring, Jack’ years ago
So he swapped his gloves for Savile Row
Jack’s no pushover though
He likes that story told
Behind the pinstripe buttonhole
Behind the yellow rose
Beats a heart of gold
Now he’s got me something new
Which is to look out for you
I said, ‘I’d be happy to, Mr Solomons’
One day Mr Solomons said
‘London, son, we have got some hard pavements’
There’s more to the man than the motto read
On the wall above his head
‘Winners win, losers make their own arrangements’
You can bet Jack is never going back
To Frying Pan Alley
Yeah, you can bet Jack is never going back
To Frying Pan Alley
You can bet Jack is never going back
To Frying Pan Alley
Yeah, you can bet Jack is never going back
To Frying Pan Alley

THE BOY
Sandwich in my pocket
Topcoat buttoned tight
Still thirty miles to pedal
On these empty roads at night
But the moon’s a giant lantern
There’s no need for a light
I’ll be home in good time In the morning
The Boy turned pro so early
Went down London way
I’ll pay a visit now and then
Make sure he’s okay
We don’t do too much talking
We look forward anyway
Sometimes we’ll just talk
About the same old
Who knows where the world is going
Nobody does
But all the same
We could never change
We could never change
Because he’s all we’ve got
No more or less
The Boy, God bless
He’s just The Boy
There’s no sign he’ll pack it in
Says why should he stop
He makes more money in that gym
Than in any blacksmith’s shop
He seems to like the glamour
The crowds and city lights
He likes the cash, he likes the flash
And fuss around the fights
Will he know when it’s all over
Will he still be sharp and bright
Still be working
Still be on a payroll?
Who knows where the world is going
Nobody does
But all the same
We could never change
We could never change
Because he’s all we’ve got
No more or less
And he’s The Boy,
God bless
He’s just The Boy

ALL COMERS
There’ll be one or two in every crowd
One or two lads being loud
Having themselves a weekend
Come out the beer tent with their mates
Look over where we stand and wait
Going to want to be showing off to the girlfriend
Over to the booth they’ll come and stand
One’s going to want to put up his hand
But he’s maybe had a drink
Never seen a real ring
He can take on his pals, keep on his shirt
We don’t want locals getting hurt
Our people on the show are all the real thing
We were here back then since way back when
In the long hot summers
Here back then and we’re back again
And taking on all comers
All comers
You keep your hands up
And your expectations slim
And you never underestimate
The man who’s climbing in
Well it’s a hard way to earn a pound alright
You’ll maybe get three or four fights a night
Maybe more on a weekend
But we want to see them back in here
When we come round again next year
May it never change, just like old friends
We were here back then since way back when
In the long hot summers
Here back then and we’re back again
And taking on all comers
All comers

BAD DAY FOR A KNIFE THROWER
Rain’s like thunder on the canvas
It’s been coming down hard all day
You’ll get the weather
And the people all staying away
On the old showground
On the edge of town
And the wind buffeting the van
Well, whatever
I still don’t have a plan
Tried to call you once or twice
Drawing a blank
That thing we talked about
I need to see it in the bank
Sitting like a dud in the fairground mud
Everything is slower
It’s been a bad day
For a knife thrower
It was a pound a round in ‘64
With all us kids to feed
They stuck together
For whatever it was we’d need
Truth is he was flying
On one engine all the time
Out on the racecourse
He knew a bookie in disorganised crime
When he couldn’t pick up a payday
Or anything else
He’d have to come through
With a tenner or two
Have a little bet against himself
Sitting like a dud in the fairground mud
Feel I’m sinking lower
It’s been a bad day
For a knife thrower
Sitting like a dud in the fairground mud
Feel I’m sinking lower
It’s been a bad day
For a knife thrower

Thank you very much Vesper :)
On the EP "The Boy" there are detailed descriptions of who played in the songs. I miss this on the album "One Deep River"
Mr. Solomons has a large text. How long are the songs?
Great lyrics. Can't wait to hear it.

Can't wait to hear this if I get lucky somehow...

So many words, they seem to be long songs. Mark has a lot to say. ;D

My hopes are fading that we will get a proper pressing of the The Boy EP. I really hope for digital versions of the EP songs later.
Last Sunday I was on a record fair and bought 10 old and used LP's from various artists, mainly 70's, 80's and early 90's (Luka Bloom). They all sound great, clean, plain and nice. It is ridiculous that they can't make them anymore the way it used to be. I would prefer a proper clean normal black vinyl over this 180 gramm 45 RPM half speed mastering stuff eery day. Where is the sense when the plessing plants work the way GZ Media does.
Sorry, rant over. It is only about the pressing. Not the quality of the music.

I approve of RSD in principle but 3,000 seems like a ridiculously low amount given the continuing levels of interest in MK.
Surely there will be some sort of subsequent release so people can own these tracks officially.

Completely agree! Based on the Guy's answer it seems (?) that it will be available digitally at some point, but I am that old-school that I would prefer CD.

Wasn't stated how many copies of Going Home were produced but remember there were only 2000 copies of ODR on Bluray which sold out just like that prompting a further 500 to be produced.

The Metroland vinyl was also produced with 3000 copies only, but widely available, same for the Encores vinyl version for RSD. On the other hand: these were re-releases of existing albums. I don't understand that either, as record stores don't put any RSD items by for you to pick up - you have to take a chance on the day. Record stores should know what they are getting however...

I contacted a record store and they offer to ship the record IF there are some left AFTER saturday.. They are not allowed to take specific personalized orders. The rules are very strict. They ordered - as they say - enough copies and are optimistic that I will hear from them after RSD, maybe next Monday. So they took my "order" and put me on the list of interested people but don't garantuee that I will get a copy. Otherwise it is more or less a lottery to get the EP.

My store asked what people were interested in so they knew what to order.
But if someone gets there before me…
-
When it became apparent that an EP was on the way I did wonder whether it might be a Record Store Day exclusive. I had hoped that it wouldn’t be released in this way, but that is unfortunately what has happened. I don’t mind so much when it comes to re-issues or new / alternative editions of previously released material, but this is four brand new songs, so there’s a lot of anxiety as to whether we’re all going to be able to get our hands on it. I’m planning on turning up at my local record shop STUPIDLY early this Saturday but even then, I’m trying to keep my expectations of getting my copy in check!
I would guess that the EP will see a digital release at some point after RSD. I can’t imagine four brand new songs not getting a wider release. But I fear the RSD vinyl may be the only physical edition, for the time being at least. Which will be annoying since I never really feel that I own something properly until I have it in physical form.
-
My Record Store Guy has already guaranteed me a copy and he has never let me down on these releases.
I guess it depends on the relationship/how much money you spend with The Guy.
I don't even have to go to the store on Saturday.
I hope others are as lucky with the 2999 remaining copies:)

I know my local record store owner well but he - quite rightly in my opinion - won’t make a special exception just for me. I’ll just have to hope I get there early enough.

Well he got left with quite a lot of unsold RSD items a few years ago(which you aren't allowed to return) so now he asks his "best" customers what they want well in advance so he doesn't lose money. The original idea of RSD was for the stores to make money so I've no problem with his approach now.

Mmm, my local guy asks people what they want him to order but still sticks to the rules so it's first come first served and even if you ordered it if someone else gets there first you may be out of luck.

The rules are they have to sell the records physically in the records shops on that Saturday.
If there are available copies, they can sell them online next Monday.
I bought all of the previous RSD records from DS and MK that way throught Discogs, to a shop from Valencia, which would had been my closest local shop (still 60 km far from me and not always possible to go there that very same day, so been available to order from them two days after, is very convenient).

Don't trust them 100%.
They are playing the card that they would have free copies after the RSD established day, and they might have some, but if they don't, they can cancel your order very easily.

The records are sent to the shops tomorrow, before that they are sealed in boxes.

That's against the RSD rules totally, and an offense to anyone else waiting until Saturday.
Especially annoying when they don’t even have a turntable, lol.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr makes a mockery of the whole thing. Then there's the dedicated of us who will need to be up at the crack of dawn on Saturday trying in vain to get a copy....

Do we really care about the rules? Getting a copy is more important! Not stolen of course. ;)

If you had a chance to get it early or guarantee a copy you would take it.
Many of the people who buy these on Saturday immediately put it up for sale at extortionate prices so it's much better if the real fans get a copy for a fair price.

They'll have a job as its one copy per person unless they are buying it purely to sell on..

Our local record shop allows to preorder one album even it they don‘t know if they will get any!
As there are lots of different albums available they want to avoid that dozens or hundreds of people come at the same time when the shop opens.

Yesterday the Greek branch of the company sent us an email that they will be delivering the RSD releases yesterday or today, but forbid to sell before Saturday. In deed they delivered today, so if someone is in this line of work or has an insider friend, he could have the record since yesterday. Again I repeat that 3000 may seem like too few, but all previous releases, even the beautiful double 7'', were easily and cheaply found for a couple of years after their release. Of course now the hype is on another level, and we have many middle men that buy copies in order to sell at extorting prices, but I believe that in the end every die hard fan will be able to find a copy at the decent initial price. And MK is neither Taylor Swift or Lana Del Ray or Weeknd, who could claim 20.000 to be their limite editions... The MK fan base is another generation, altogether, with slightly different buying habits.
BTW, today they also delivered the limited colour edition of the new album. The same price with the standard black edition.

Good point. I’ve seen various social media posts hyping RSD from various stores and nobody seems to be hyping MK.
But I guess it just comes down to FOMO. And if there’s one MK fan in the queue in front of you… :)

I lined up an hour before opening back in the day for the Honky Tonk Demos. I believe I was about 12 or 13th waiting outside this record store in Sydney and I was convinced everyone in front of me would want to buy the new DS record! Of course, no one did & I got one easily, then strolled up the road to the next nearest store where there wasn't any queue and bought another one!
I'll have another adventure into the city tomorrow & see what happens!

Maybe a person with connection to a record shop. No big deal. Or even an owner. Whatever.
Nice to see the pics. Thanks Maroretto.
So no mastering from Bob Ludwig. He really only did ODR and that's it

They phoned me yesterday that I could go and pick it up, but I can go only tomorrow morning.... :smack
Regarding the second question... yes, I can, tomorrow of course.
-
I guess the video some of us seen in London of All Comers may hit Youtube tomorrow.
-
A friend from Switzerland was able to order "The Boy" for me. Today he got the information that the EP has arrived!
However, he can only pick it up on Saturday next week and will then send it to me in Germany.

Do you know if we will be able to find these titles in digital format? not having a vinyl turntable, it's very frustrating

Seems that quite a few people have managed to break RSD rules and obtain a copy already!

Just got a message my copy is available tomorrow and will be shipped on Monday, so that’s quite according to the rules. Or more or less? :think

Agreed. It’s exasperating, and selfish to say the least. Unfortunately it’s one of the inevitable frustrations of it being an RSD exclusive. I’m glad the chap at my local record store is abiding by the rules and will have a number of copies available on the day…but I’m still feeling a good deal of pre-RSD anxiety here!
I hope there will be another physical release of this EP at some point for those of us who will inevitably miss out on it tomorrow, but I’m not getting my hopes up too high at this point.
-
I’m pretty sure they will release the songs in another format one day. Digital releases are great sales opportunities but first, they will use the RSD business model. Maybe within a year they will be available one way or another.
Similar to the ODR bonus vinyl flac files: where did they come from? Apparently not via a record player as they’re completely vinyl-cracks-free. :think Or I didn’t hear anything and am getting old. ;D
-

Wasn't aware you can reserve them? In fact the RSD rules are that they can tell you the copies are in but that doesn't make it yours until you've parted with some money. My friend who owns the record shop I'm going to has just said we've got the copies in and wished me luck with getting a copy....

If you’ve got a brand new piece of well made vinyl and a good turntable there shouldn’t be any clicks.
But I agree whoever made them did an excellent job.

Now eagarly waiting for the reports, how the songs are like...
-
So I couldn't be bothered with an early early start today which meant there we're about 70-100 people in front of me at Sydney's biggest record store. Still no trouble to get the record (they had 1 left after I purchased mine).
Bad Day for a Knife Thrower is pretty and haunting. Lovely production, beautiful piano & guitar solos.
Mr Solomon's Said has a nice jazz feel, warm double bass, some pretty piano. Great production on the "flashbulbs razzamatazz" section. A nice coda too with cool backing vocals, kinda Hit the road Jack vibe.
The Boy is a nice acoustic guitar driven song, I like it.
Overall after a first listen I really enjoyed the vibe of these 4 songs. There's none I don't like, so I think this will grow and grow. Thanks MK for a RSD treat!
-
Forgot to mention All Comers! It kind of reminds me of a cross between Border Reiver and Early Bird, lovely track.
-
Thanks for your impressions:) What is the timing of the songs?
-
Managed to get my copy this morning here in Australia,
First impressions ,
Like all the songs,
Mr Solomons - More guitar than expected , great piano playing , jazz feeling
The boy - typical MK acoustic tune , well recorded , beautiful playing and singing.
All comers - really like the feeling of this tune, great MK celtic vibe, Amazing , definitely the tune of the album for me.
Bad Day - As fletch stated, I think the production is great, piano/guitar solos and sounds great.
Nothing super uptempo still very chilled, I could be wrong but seems a bit free-er to me than the guitar playing on Deep River, In my opinion almost like the guitar playing was recorded earlier (2020 even?) less stiff, nothing super fast, but guitar playing seemed a bit more MK to me than some of the things like Ahead of the game guitar wise.
Overall , I really enjoyed it on first listen. Really lucky to get this extra to the new album! I'll post some more thoughts after another listen or two. :)

If I don't get The Boy, I try one of the other boys

~approximately :)

I also got one (and I have possibly also an extra one), but no chance to listen this, so waiting for the digital files.
-
Got up early this morning and just became the proud owner of The Boy EP, sadly I don’t own a record player…
Hope someone around here can help me (and others) out with a good needle drop conversion to a digital file to be able to actually listen to those songs?
-
My 2 local stores didn’t get a copy at all

Tada! Worth the three hour wait!

Congrats Knopflerfan! I waited for 1 minute to get my copy lol..

Picked it up at my rivertown in Ireland just now, nobody around. They only got 1 the shop said. No record player though, someone please send on the flac so I can listen in the car, please. :-)

So many AMITer's saying this. If capitalism has treated you kindly go and buy a second hand record player (from the 80s will do), a phono amp (also check if your existing amp already has a phono input) & the best damn bookshelf speakers you can find, it will change your life! Find an old hifi repair shop and talk to them, in my experience the people that repair old hifi equipment are kind and will know what you're after when you describe your needs. Nobody's getting any younger, do it. Do it now.
*I have a second hand CEC Harksound turntable, and Cambridge Audio / Rotel amplifiers + really good speakers (that's where all the money is). It's a glorious thing.
-

Cheers! A real buzz this morning. In the queue since 5am, met some lovely people, then a numbered sheet given to us all to select our choices then when you get to the counter and it is your turn there it is on the counter for you! Such a great start to a fabulous day!

:'(
Since the 60s the way people listen to music at home has evolved rapidly and (obviously) the people with the most money get the best equipment. However, there's no particular barrier to most people having a turntable and amp and being able to play records like everyone did up until the 80s. There is a obnoxious snobby culture on some websites where equipment is debated, but I recommend ignoring this and just grabbing a simple setup, enjoy it and upgrade as time passes by. Vinyl records are by no means for the "Elite".

Will the EP be available on Spotify?

Just had to wait 20 minutes to get into the store, then got it😃

My daughter, on her 17th birthday, went and queued up forcrecord store day. When she got in they told her they had 3 copies, all sold already. Damn. If anyone is able to be kind later with anything digital that would be wonderful.
-
Success! Just arrived home. I arrived at the record shop at 6.30 am. Around 20 people ahead of me and after the doors opened at 8 am had another hour to wait until it was my turn. It was very well run and great atmosphere in the queue. A lady from the cafe opposite took orders! I can't wait to listen now! :)

8 posts and 6 of them have either been complaining about not having a turntable or asking for rips. ::)

Absolutely worth 3hrs hanging around in the queue!
I've now sampled the three tracks I hadn't heard before and they are absolutely brilliant.
1) Mr Soloman Said - pretty, jazzy little number with some lovely guitar from MK
2) The Boy - not too far removed from Heart of Oak/Matchstick Man but a bit deeper in sound
4) bad Day For A Knife Thrower- a nice little track with beautiful acoustic guitar and some lovely electric guitar licks.
All in all I'm thrilled to own a copy and feel blooming happy!

I simply can't agree with that part in your answer, vinyle is no more a standard way to access music now.
Releasing new music that excluding way is just reaching the red line.

With the naysayers on this one. Why restrict the audience to new music? By all means put it out on vinyl, but have it available digitally too. I would have bought the box set for the bonus tracks but I don't own a record player and I'm not about to purchase one. Are any of the bonus tracks from the box and/or The Boy available digitally?

Buy a turntable and the problem is solved.

My thoughts/ opinions. These aren’t directed at anyone individually so please don’t get upset.
Firstly, congrats to everyone who obtained a copy. Commiserations to those who didn’t but hopefully you can still get lucky. My experience from previous years is that selling prices skyrocket in the days after RSD and then go back to around RRP and sometimes even below as FOMO subsides, but obviously there is a risk in waiting.
I have mixed feelings seeing so many posts from people who have bought the record but have no means of playing it. I’m a bit of a collector myself so I get it, it’s just a shame for those who want to buy this to listen to but won’t be able to.
In terms of the people who have a friendly/crooked record store owner who let you get the record early or without going through the official process, you got the record and that’s the main thing.
BUT!
You also missed out.
You missed out on a fantastic experience. Myself and others in this thread had a wonderful experience queueing up, making new friends with fellow buyers, being supplied with coffees (Red Bull reps turned up at my store to give free drinks to everyone in the queue!) and having the feeling of anticipation rising as you got closer to the front.
And most of all, you missed out on the sheer joy when you get to the front of the queue, ask if they have any copies of The Boy by Mark Knopfler, and the assistant returned from a box with a copy in their hand. That was a wonderful moment, something truly wonderful that money can’t buy.

It's great you have had a wonderful experience and managed to snag a copy.
However it is 2024 so you shouldn't have to get up at the crack of dawn, queue for hours to buy a record.
The very least RSD should do is give you the ability to order records in advance so you can collect them on the day.Just imagine spending multiple hours travelling and queuing to buy a single record only for it to be unavailable due to scalpers.

An alternative and equally valid opinion. All I can tell you is that my experience of Record Store Day was overwhelming positive :)
-
I'm in it to win it, or them. :)
Not giving the store away but their service was excellent. I was still first in line around opening at noon enjoying myself and chatting with peers. And I started queuing a quarter before opening. ;D
One thing mustn't exclude the other.
-
Had to wait a couple of hours in the cold since before 6am, but it was all worth it when I got my hands on this beauty. Can’t wait to listen to it later this evening! Hopefully some decent flacs will turn up soon for those not so lucky (heck, sign me up as well—I’d love to have these songs on my phone).

Agree with Dusty, it was a great experience and glad I queued up. Especially as I got a copy. The queues around the vinyl shops in the Brighton lanes were insane. I never knew it was such a big event.
-
My thoughts/ opinions.

I simply can't agree with that part in your answer, vinyle is no more a standard way to access music now.

My 2 local stores didn’t get a copy at all
I'm also in the Netherlands (Friesland) and I went to 2 local stores as well.
One shop didn't get it at all and the other one had only one copy.
Luckily than one is mine and I already gave it a couple of spins and I'm enjoying it immensely.
-
I do hope these songs (and the other bonus songs) turn up on spotify or are going to be downloadable.
I imagine All Comers will be a great hit on the car stereo!
-
Think about the next RSD if they release some unreleased DS/MK live... :o
-
The store in my city didn't receive the delivery on time :disbelief they sent me back to next week! :smack
I hope someone releases some flac rips... I would be very grateful!

Even in the UK, Record store day is just for independent retailers - We only have one music shop in a town of 100,000 people! (HMV)
and they haven't got it and won't be getting it. My nearest independent record shop is 35 miles away in Newcastle, so I wasn't going to get up early and join their queue. I'll have to find it somewhere else.

I totally respect the people who love the vinyl experience.
I'm just not one of them. The reasons to love vinyl have everything to do with nostalgia, and nothing to do with technical facts. Vinyls do have a very good frequency response (around 50khz), but a rather poor dynamic range compared to CD (around 60db vs. 96).
So, buying a turntable (which takes a lot of space, as the records do) is not an option for me, and I think I deserve to be respected for that. Releasing a "vinly only" and "only today if you queue early in front of the shop" sounds like Back to the Future III to me, like going back to 1865...
To cut my long story short: getting a link to flac files by PM would be very highly appreciated 🤣
-
Thank you for those who don't have a record store nearby and no vinyl turntable,
-
Looks like a couple of copies already on ebay UK.

Unfortunately I wasn't lucky :(

Couldn't agree more Dusty, but the age of laziness when everything is available digitally is plain boring. Loved the high like you of getting my arse out of bed and wait a few hours to buy something that I really wanted! The high of the seller putting the vinyl EP on the counter when it was my turn will never be matched by downloading a track to my computer! Such an amazing day I'm still buzzing!

It wasn’t directed at anyone in particular. Just seems that every time there are rare tracks released we have a flurry of people begging for them who contribute little else.

For anyone in Glasgow… I managed to get a copy in Love Music around 2:30pm and there were still some left!

I find this marketing very frustrating, people who don't have a record store nearby don't have a turntable, we can feel legitimately wronged, it's a shame that some are ironic by saying they are the elite
-
I got lucky, too! Friend of mine went to a sports event in the next bigger town and was so nice to check the record store for me. He bought me a copy, I will get it on Monday. ((Hope it survives the afternoon ;D)
So can't hear it now, but happy.

the digital version of the boy will be available in May, email received by Cmg London today
-
Today was a glorious day.
I met with my friends and queued in the door of a record shop, we bought happily the ep, one copy each of us, luckily, and after that we gathered in a local and played the ep twice, and after we played music ourselves, it's been many years since I sat behind a drum kit for the last time and I felt very rusty but we enjoyed a lot playing music together in such a festive day for us. After we went to a restaurant and had lunch together and have a lot of laughs (and drinks).
Thanks MK and RSD for this.

By the way, if anyone in Europe missed out there are quite a few copies for sale on Discogs at reasonable prices.

If you look at the figure you can only call it "a trend".
Figure for 2023 world music market
The global music market is $ 28.6 billion
Vinyle value is $ 1.8 billion (out of $ 5.1 billion for physical selling)
-
Good news about the digital version is on his way

There is a very short "review" from DS fan, but not so much solo stuff fan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbh9ZC2zGC4

BUY A RECORD PLAYER! Simples!
No, it is not. I am in no way interested in the much higher price and downright hassle, especially not for inferior sound quality. The "vinyl experience", too, does not interest me in the slightest. Limiting some of the tracks to vinyl only is an utter joke.
What's next? Limiting some tracks to people who can verify that they own tube amps and horn-loaded speakers?

Yes, vinyl first, then digital is perfectly OK with me. But that's not the case with One Deep River vinyl bonus tracks. Or?

Just for fun I had a look at the cost of a turntable on Amazon.fr
You can get this item rated 4.5 stars for €62.
https://www.amazon.fr/Lecteur-Haut-parleurs-int%C3%A9gr%C3%A9s-Vitesses-auxiliaire/dp/B0BWXHKS9L/ref=sr_1_4_sspa?__mk_fr_FR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=K1AGBXJVIMES&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.hwcak2NltTpLztNZSX--DAVVV5U8cVwpK7J0IaRJFA_rsnBygdSIGxWmo78VthmGdN9VdEVWhf39yqB3YRmaHYiDLqOFRUGvdKBnO4iRxUxrqARL22idSUpJT0snRaadboBxl_TLmDLyAJhnmyW8uUBeRvo8Ynb9t6DropXMbfaha4oIjBP0AaelnzfqHHJNNY31VWz3kaksft8TzgmA9aV89pCOwqTcdz7dIEhZnM0uQWY8jXdA_aPa1TjbKRkRvYYDqley1xlgRXnYWvL7ZJvZmWjwVzsywRazgOGW3hU.RwQAD_1MWu1Vo0m-xjCENR5_snYtJpCShLVhbS01zCU&dib_tag=se&keywords=crosley+turntable&qid=1713632070&sprefix=crossley+turntable%2Caps%2C98&sr=8-4-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1
Then The Boy EP is around €25.
Hardly the preserve of “the elite”.
It’s funny how people have become so entitled that they believe they should be able to listen to whatever they want on the format of their choosing instantly.

Record store day is all about supporting the small independent shops that normally get outmuscled and out priced. These guys are all about the music. RSD is a great incentive that brings people through the door of these shops and hopefully provides a much needed boost to the coffers too. That’s hardly elitism. As with most RSD “exclusives” I’m not shocked to see The Boy will be out in other formats very soon too. I hope everyone enjoys the music. What a week to be an MK Fan!

Maybe interesting for German/EU Knopfler fans amongst us: https://justforkicks.de/shop/hardrock/17533/the-boy-12-rsd-20.04.2024
Don’t know the shop, but seems legit. Reasonably priced in contrast to Ebay profiteers.

My first listen to ODR on physical media was the cassette version! I’m a sucker for all types! Thanks to my

LOL That turntable ... Plastic fantastic POS. Anyone mention environmental sustainability? Sure, you could get a decent Rega, Pro-ject or Technics turntable and decent pickup for not a whole lot of money, but it's still far more expensive than a good streamer and a good DAC (or just a good integrated amp with built-in streamer and DAC) and the sound quality is not even close.
I'm totally fine with waiting for later digital releases, especially like here where the aim is to support independent record stores, but at least give people a choice in how they want to listen to their music. I'm thinking particularly about the ODR. However, that some music is only availble if you buy a deluxe release or a box set, that's a different story. Pay more to get more.

All Comers. Simply outstanding 👏
-
When The Beatles released the Let It Be single in 1970 it contained a quirky little B-side that hardly anyone heard until the 1987 CD Pastmaster releases on CD. Those 17 years of not being able to hear a song I didn't know about, in a format of my choice, were the worst of my life. Even badderer, I couldn't afford a CD player until 1990 so an agonising 17 years was actually increased to 20. The Beatles are not the only ones to participate in great injustice. I never even heard Badges, Sticker & Postcards until I joined AMIT (which I believe is still not officially available digitally?).
We truly live in a golden age of knowing every setlist every night & then demanding it be changed. Knowing of every bonus b-side & being outraged that we can't hear it immediately. We even have the good fortune to know that people on AMIT with the conversion technology will help out but the undercurrent of pain & inability to be patient causes stress and whining. Are we happier?

Indeed. Sounds like a mix between Border Reiver and One Song At a Time. t would have been a great opener for a tour...

Slept in, forgot it was RSD. Finally remembered when dropping off my kid at a coffee shop. Stopped by my record store at 3pm, they had 2 copies left. Gonna give it a spin in a minute.
If you're a Dire Straits/Knopfler fan you owe it to yourself to have a turntable.

If you're a Dire Straits/Knopfler fan you owe it to yourself to have a turntable.
I've been a DS/MK fan for 36 years, and I have never owned a turntable.
May I remind you that DS started the CD revolution with Brothers in Arms in 1985...
-
When The Beatles released the Let It Be single in 1970 it contained a quirky little B-side that hardly anyone heard until the 1987 CD Pastmaster releases on CD.
Badges is on spotify. :)
And on ExtendedancEPlay :)

I don't know, but it's a good question.

That's true. I bought this EP in Chicago. I was happy like a child. :)

I just can't stop listening to All Comers! It's sublime and I love the GL-vibe! Might be in my Top 10 of MK's solo songs.
Read up on articles about Ron Taylor's boxing booths in Britain. Fascinating stuff.

So the opening chord in Mr Solomon's Said is a chromatic run on Bb-aug? Where's Pavel when you need him?

May I ask if it is possible to create an own board for "The Boy" with single threads for all four tracks? At least to me, it it a release on its own, apart from coming from the same sessions, there is no other relation to One Deep River.
What all these four songs have in common, they are much more "elaborated", much more composed, much more the usual MK so to say. I am sure there is much to talk about.

I say just create single threads rather than a whole new board. They are all from the ODR sessions.

Fourth time trying to post it here, hope it won't vanish AGAIN
I think it is worth to discuss. This is an own release, artistically and musicalwise, it has nothing to do with ODR. Boards are made for releases, not for sessions. I would go for an own board, because how would you number them otherwise? 21 to 25? That just don't feel right to me. Folks?

Indeed, probably one of the most hidden MK tracks ever. Never understood why they only released it on German discs. On the day of the release, I drove the entire 20kms to Germany to get a copy but I hardly play it. :lol

I like how AMIT brings us all Knopfler aficionados together as a family and we feel free to express ourselves without any reservations, without the fear of being misunderstood or mocked upon our, otherwise, irrational obsession with MK and his releases. And how I forget my other really serious everyday issues, while doing it. A side-note, we must always remember: all these special releases and different versions of releases by music artists, including MK, are simply marketing strategies, to get people like us to spend more by buying multiple copies, of pretty much the same product, at the initial retail price. I don't want to admit that marketing tactics work so well, but then again this must be all the proof needed.

LE,
Threads created for the four EP tracks - hopefully they can be put into an appropriate folder at some point...

Great to have the threads. These were from the same sessions and as I understand it the themes was only identified later. I'm happy with these on the same ODR page, I think of them as 22, 23, 24 and 25!

At least we now have threads for them, whether they end up in a separate, designated folder remains to be seen...

203. Hello.
-
Ohh BOY! At last, arrangements, lyrics and music that make you forget where you are, what a beauty these four songs are.
-
Indeed. Classy songs and beautifully arranged. Even the simple acoustic driven The Boy is taken to another level. All Comers is an instant classic.
-
I like these four songs very much. Mr. Solomon Said fits me the most with the vibe of the EP jazz 50's. Great! But why isn't there a description of Seana Davey who plays the harp in this song? I'm glad to hear more piano on the EP (I like it a lot) The title song - wonderful melody... All Comers - masterful. Nice guitar in Bad Day For A Knife Thrower.

Yes, The Boy is a beautiful song which starts timidly and then grows wonderfully.
Bad Day For A Knife Thrower is a pure gem, I've always loved Mark's songs like that, very moving and bluesy, like Baloney Again, Hard Shoulder, Sucker Row and others, there's always a special atmosphere in those songs and I love that.
-
I like all the tracks from this EP, all of them are quite beautiful.
-
Reading all this after missing out on the release last Saturday really makes me hope that a digital release in May means early in May! Can't wait to hear those songs!
-
I've been listening to this lovely EP most of the weekend and I really love it! All of the tracks are good, my favourites at the moment are All Comers and The Boy, but they are all very enjoyable. :)
-
I WAANA HEAR ALL COMERS!! Boo-hoo!

Anyone still looking for a vinyl copy? There are still a few kicking around, in German shops anyway.
-
After all our panic there are 52 copies for sale on Discogs for as low as 20 euros, lol.
-
Got another one for my dad in Germany for €23 with €17 added for shipping… The ones on ebay are ridiculous.
-
17 € for shipping?? That's a lot!

17 € for shipping?? That's a lot!
All the way from Germany to the Netherlands…! But hey, I called one record store here and they wanted €36 for The Boy EP and no guarantee it’s still available as they do not make any reservations. Need to drive there (40km one way) and park my car, really can’t do that for €17 with current fuel prices. :lol

This is so frustrating. I have no use for physical media, especially LPs. I'd happily pay for these songs if there were a legit way to do so.
-
It is true that "All Comers" hits you at the very first listening but, when I played the EP for the first time, it was "Mr Solomon said" the one that caught my attention and sounded more promising, and after being all morning yesterday listening to the digitalized files at work on constant repeat, it's that song my favorite of all the record.
And all the songs are very beautiful indeed, maybe "The Boy" is the one I like the less, but "Mr Solomon" is my number one if I had to choose only one song from this EP.
-

Oh I agree, All Comers is absolutely brilliant and in my eyes it's a journey back to the sounds of the Get Lucky sessions when the 'Folksters' appeared! Of course hearing 'All comers' at the promo event makes one slightly biased towards having that as a fave of the ep too, but I am also very keen on Mr Solomans Said as it is a perfect opener to the EP - setting the stage for four wondrous tracks that deserve to be on their own!
-
I was prepared to love All Comers (after having heard it before from the video source) and it is a great song, but the true gem on this EP for me is "The Boy". Such a wonderful piece. I take a wild guess and think that this was thought about as a possible title track of a possibly other mix of titles on the main album. The boxing background from the other songs is more a fairground one. The talk about "not fitting" I don't buy completely. You can say that about almost every song on side A of One Deep River.
The Story of the boy, the view of parents on their son who goes to London to make his dream come true could also be a metaper about MK himself. I haven't read such heartfelt and warm lyrics full of love from Mark in a long time. Also the music and the melody are both so beautiful. There is no song on One Deep River that is so good, although All Comers is as good in another way -full band, perfect opener, much energy, all that was said already is right of course.
Also I take a wild guess that the beautiful art work for the EP (with that nice golden glittering) was considered as art work and title of the album earlier during production. The Boy, an album about himself and his youth. Later it was then decided to change the title. From the 25 songs, an album with totally other character and style would have been possible.
LE
-
Yes, indeed LE 'The boy' as a singular track is a very moving, pretty tune that simply draws you in especially with those very warm, loving lyrics. I particularly like
But the moon's a giant lantern,
There's no need for a light
I'll be home in good time
In the morning
Especially as at one particular time I was laid in bed with the curtains open looking into the night sky!

I have to say that I'm more of a reader than a writer, but I'm also usually very busy. I will login to post something, and then something will drag me away and I don't get back, or forget! But I do love reading what you fine people post here whenever I do visit, though.
I too queued up and waited 1.45 hours + before being allowed in to the record shop, and luckily managed to buy a copy of The Boy. In fact there was a great sense of camaraderie queuing up like that, something you just don't get elsewhere. Unfortunitely I still don't have a record deck, so despite the 3 hour round journey, I too will have to wait for some kind of digital download, or CD.

I have a slightly different opinion. The One Deep River album has a very specific vibe for me I can't explain it but each song has that something and it fits very well with the whole. “I don't hear” on the album the song The Boy or All Comers. It's a different story, also beautiful but different for me. It's good that these 4 songs made it to the EP.

It's true. Beautiful words.

I received the EP today, and what can I say? Just wow, this is Knopfler at his best! Starts with the jazzy song, and continues with typical MK songs that are some of his best ever. Also, I really like the Cover of this EP, much more interesting than ODR with just the bridge ;)

Ah, covers wise they are both 'artistic' in their own way.
By the way it's not just ONE bridge on the ODR cover is it? There are at least Three bridges clearly to be seen...
*Tyne bridge,
*Metro bridge
*King Edward VII bridge

And I'd say a couple more you can't see...

Youtube videos are out now😃

No, they are not. It seems that each region/country of the world enforces its own copyright laws. Use VPN Greece, they are still up.

It's available for streaming in Amazon Music. Love it so far! Every song has its special character.

How disappointing, I presumed it was going to be the band video for 'All Comers' which we saw at the ODR promo event in London.

Maybe later on the day.
I still think they might release the whole video press kit for the record, because the already uploaded videos are clearly cut.
-
The whole EP now available on Qobuz at the same 24/192 as the main album.

Would be nice. When we saw the three videos in London, it was one film NOT individual videos...
-
It’s also on Spotify and Apple Music.

The band video for 'All Comers' that some of us saw in London for the ODR Promo is released later today..

Well spotted, yeah I saw that as well. I'm wondering if thats the Sig Strat without Texas Pickups? Didn't I read he'd changed pickups on one of the strats?

"You're marching right up to the source of the dragon, the smoky cave..."
Mark Knopfler on Bernard Cribbins, 1930s fairgrounds and touring with Dylan.
This is an excerpt from the latest "Uncut" magazine. Does anyone have one?
-
Latest like May? I went through it yesterday, but probably missed it. Any hints of where it might be exactly?
-
Maybe in June's

There are pictures in the recent Guitarist magazine feature. The Strat with the black switch has Callahan pickups now.

Thanks! In Greece we get Junes issue later, like the 20th of May.
-
The EP is on radio stations as of today. :)
-
Just noticed The Boy is now streaming in Dolby Atmos via Apple Music. Definitely wasn’t when it was first released digitally!

Anyone seen this? Apprently some kind of CD version. Accidentally bumped into it.
Edit: Link removed!

Doesn’t look like a bootleg though, or they (mis)used the BG logo without permission I suppose?

Can’t believe bootleggers don’t respect copyright laws, disgraceful.
-
Well, typically not, but I haven’t seen a bootleg yet with full details like all logos, including the record company and a 1 on 1 copy of the artwork. So question remains: fake stuff or not? :P
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not selling these copies and do not want to promote any illegal copies for sales. Just wondering if someone else has seen it.
-
I don't thing that the CD can have the exact same cat number as for the vinyl : 00602458534214
And add the expanded tracklist.
Bootleg for me.
-
It's a bootleg.
And it's not the only one, there are many many others, usually from Russia.

Hmm, that’s strange indeed. I’ll remove the link in my post. Too bad!

boot.

And I am 100% sure that we would be aware of an official version, before the release.
-
I guess each fan hides a small collector in him, trying to create an altar of products bearing the artist's art or even only the name. Some draw the line on official releases, especially when it comes to artists like MK and DS, where unofficial releases are so many that even the most keen fan won't be able to afford even if able to track down. And the counterfeit ones, like this, might have some charm for the fan as well. I wonder about the quality of the printing and whether this is pressed or a CDr. When you receive it, would you mind sharing a review?

Sure, I’ll check it (if it arrives…). Back in the day, there were noumerous CD and especially single versions with either 1, 2, 3 or 4 tracks and different tracks. You never knew when you could stop collecting as another version popped up. I really miss those days. :lol
-
Thank you!Yes, now with discogs and fans online cataloging everything, part of the mystery is gone. On the other hand, you get to know things that otherwise would be up to luck to discover. Objects of desire, but if someone is after the music only, it is easier to track down.
-
What you all expected is likely true: 99% chance it’s fake. GL style print on the CD itself, booklet includes lyrics of first 4 tracks onl. Too bad!
