Good Day to everyone,
I just read in Belgian magazine "Humo" an interview with Brian Johnson (AC/DC).
Some questions about his program "A Life On the Road" were answered.
One of them being "will there be a sequel" ?
This is his answer : see picture....
Thanks to Google translate for the English version of that part of the article ;)
Something to look forward to....Don't know where or when it will be broadcasted or streamed.
-
It's scheduled to be released this fall if I'm not mistaken. Great series indeed, love the interaction between those two. Brian absolutely loses it while listening to MK.
-
I never thought we would see the day where MK was a TV and radio presenter. What a world we live in.
-
I wonder who else they have interviewed. EH perhaps. ???

I can confirm they haven’t interviewed me.

When I saw MK presenting the documentary about the STP characters I saw clear that he would be great doing that.

It would had been good if that was a real person, lol.
Others did better, keep learning!

Emmylou Harris.

Now, after a lifetime in music, they’re taking a moment to reflect. In this brand new series, Brian, Mark and special guests including Sam Fender and Emmylou Harris will embark on a joyous romp through the history of popular music, exploring the key moments that transformed these mavericks into iconic musicians.

Is this a real quote? I like Sam Fender but he's hardly an icon.

Real quote. It was published when the news came out about the new season.

That descriptions sounds very different to the premise of Life on the Road.

What MK and Brian are doing is not Life on the road but other show, so that makes sense.

When Mark and Brian are together there is always a lot of laughter. Can't wait.....

Maybe we should open a new thread with the name of this new TV show in order to avoid confusion with the "life on the road" one?

Cyndi Lauper is mentioned in the OP.
If this is an "enjoyable romp (!) through the history of music" then perhaps each episode won't just focus on one person as per Life on the Road.

Not sure if we have seen this pic before

Brian seems to have a pull to get the very biggest names if the first two series are anything to go by.

You know there have been lots of cases similar to this where it was deemed "offensive".

How dare you compare MK to a cartoon character? That's disgusting! MK is real, and those puppets aren't. Delete, please.

In a way it's a form of flattery. I'm sure Mark would have a good laugh at it as he himself was involved in a Jim Henson project with The Ghost of Faffner Hall.

And of course he willingly had himself made into a puppet for the Calling Elvis video.

Were MK and Keith Harris of Orville fame ever seen in the same room together at the same time?

Autumn is just around the corner ;D

Or did i get that wrong? Anyway, it's up to the tv netwerk now.

I think you can email them but i doubt they will give a straight answer on when the episodes will be on tv

I wonder whether the series was intended to coincide with the release of Mark’s new album. If that’s the case, or if it contains material from the album in its soundtrack, it might well be that it can’t be broadcast until the album is released, hence the delay.

This is from Sky Arts TV so I guess there is no relation between the TV channels schedule and MK schedule, specially since also Brian Johnson is involved.
But maybe, who knows...
-
I asked Guy and he replied:
I’m not really the person to ask since I’m not involved in it but Mark and Brian have been working on it. It’s ongoing.

If they're still working on it I wouldn't expect to see it broadcast for some time.

Ah. Perhaps there has been some confusion there and 8th February might be the date when it becomes available to stream on Now TV. I don’t have access to that service so I’m waiting for the Sky Arts broadcasts.

The furthest we can see ahead is 14 days.
I just checked, nothing up to 19th Feb...

LOL! That reminds me of Randy Newman. He always used to do little introductions to his songs which were even funnier than the songs themselves. I think it was in 1992 when he played "I just want you to hurt (like I do)", and said he wanted it to be this big charity thing like "We are the world", with good celebrities, where he would get a chance to sing, "without Cyndi Lauper ripping away the microphone all the time".
The cd is called 12 songs twice, very recommendable!

Nice to have someone on the way up instead of the usual old fogeys. :)
-
True, I wonder how the guests were chosen, we know the ones with a link to Mark, but what about the others? All sounds promising though, and maybe other series after this one. It will be great to watch Mark performing too.
-
MK has worked with Tom Jones, Emmylou and Sam Fender previously. He also jammed with Nile Rodgers on the Chris Evans breakfast show as part of the Tracker promo stuff.
-
Yes, I know about them, but I found the Cindy Lauper show strange, although he doesn't have a connection to Carlos Santana, they do have the guitar connection. Maybe Cindy was Brian's choice 🤔
-
Cyndi is a legend in the LGBTQ community so all bases covered in this show.
All the guests are really good so looking forward to it.

And MK played with him at the CMAs. I’m sure MK entirely respected Vince’s decision to try to make a go of it, it’s what he would have done himself.
-
I found the Cindy Lauper show strange
Brian says in the first post in this thread that the producers asked them to include more female guests than the previous series of Life On The Road.

I would love to see Paul Simon and David Gilmour in this.... Anyway, looking forward to the tv show...

Stretching credibility beyond breaking point. M&S isn't it?
-
Apparently, judging by one of the photos from skytv, Mark is rocking an iPhone XR in baby blue colour. Nice choice!
I loved this phone when I had it. Simple, fast, no bells and whistles, with a single camera and gorgeous LCD screen.
-
Personally I'm worried that the new title might put people off if they think that MK has teamed up with Boris Johnson for this.

Boris Johnson and David Knopfler' Music Legends
-
On the plus side, if MK is travelling around the world and jamming with all these legends it would suggest his health/playing isn't as bad as previously speculated :)
-
Looking at the new photos on his YouTube channel, he has his acoustic guitar with him, so, we will get to hear him play, which is great as we are not getting a tour.
There are lots of female artists Mark and Brian could interview if they do a second series.

Emmylou Harris. I'm really glad :)

I wonder what speculations you are referring to if the man has stopped touring and playing live—no need to speculate when actions say more than words. You can have relatively good health but still have trouble singing or playing guitar. These are physically and mentally demanding activities.

Sad, but true.
Believe me, everyone who are 'speculating' (including myself) really desires that MK's health/playing issues were fake.
Today on Guy's forum, he mentioned that Mark took some hi octane painkillers during the DTRW tour.

Maybe there was a teleprompter only during the US leg after the problem began? I’ve never seen it during the 2010 tour but there’s surprisingly little content of the US leg.

Some Captures

I hope we get to hear Mark and Emmylou sing again.

I see Mark with an acoustic there and that he played with Santana too. Wonder if the reason for the delay in the show was remixing the guitar parts. :think

In the description of most of the episodes it is said they jammed together so we're going to listen them playing, which is nice!

I hope we can watch that outside the UK!
Mark is busy nowadays

Just got the new Radio Times. The show is picked out as "choice" viewing, with a nice picture and a write up which says episode 1, with Tom Jones, sees Mark play acoustic guitar and them sing some shared favourite songs, which it describes as "magical".

Radio Times - ah I remember those days. Its obviously still going...
Ah brilliant - Thank-you...

The trailer is fantastic! MK is such a joker. He really lets loose when he has someone to "lean on", like during the NHB shows. I've got to see this series somehow.

I hope we can all watch this!

My past experience with Sky is that you can download to watch on the device that you are using but they have encryption etc that prevents them being shared in an easy way...
-
There are a couple of episodes from his A Life on the Road series floating about out there. I watched the Sting episode. Brian Johnson is a heck of a host! The things is a bit slick, but still worth watching.
The dynamic between Brian and Mark, though, is pretty amazing. And quite unexpected actually. I hope these shows will find their way to Netflix eventually.
-
The one hot take from episode 1 is that we see Mark playing snooker.
No wonder he sings about it.
They certainly picked the right guest in Tom Jones.
Lovely stuff.

I would totally be up to pay for my share along with other AMIT'ers, but the content would probably be geoblocked, I suppose. I don't even live in Europe anymore.

Yeah, paying for it isn't the problem. It's getting it into a format that could be shared easily without encryption. But it's obviously possible as just about every show out there is available on pirate sites, IPTV etc... or so I am told.
I will take another opportunity to point out that AMIT does not condone piracy or breach of copyright in any way, so any further discussion along these lines should probably end here. :)
I'm sure if everyone is patient anyone who wants to watch this will be able to. :)

Used the series record function on the Sky Q box for the episodes at 02:00 so that I could watch them at any time and flick through the ads. If you have the same system you might want to do that too as I only found out by chance it was shown at that time.
Just watched episode 1 and found it enjoyable enough, although it was a bit talky with TJ giving lots of anecdotes. With about 90% of the show filmed with the three of them sat in the same position it felt rather static. The highlights were when they were having a sing song and some of TJ's anecdotes were interesting - he is good at telling them.

Ep 2 was filmed at British Grove last summer and Sam Fender comes across really well. The story behind his song "Spit Of You" is very touching.
Ep 3 is the best so far. What a woman Cyndi is.Mark and Cyndi first met in the early 80s.Lots of warmth and respect between all 3 and Mark playing with Cyndi on True Colors is just beautiful.
This episode has the most Mark so far and is all the better for it.
-
Watched episode 1 last night. A great watch, Brian and Mark have a warm, natural rapport and Tom Jones was very interesting. Very relaxed atmosphere between the three. A bit like a musical episode of Last of the Summer Wine! A UK TV ref there.....the sing-song were great, Mark strummed a bit on guitar to accompany. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
-
I thought it was fantastic.
And it's another beautiful day so if any AMIT members with more than 50 posts would like to have a chat, my PMs are open :)

I can't wait for them to be broadcast in my country...hopefully soon!! From the trailer they look like fantastic episodes, not to be missed!

Eps 4 and 5 are filmed on the East and West coasts of the USA.
Two of the coolest guys in the business,
Both look very good for their age and can still perform at an extremely high level(if only......!)
The choice of guests on this show has been excellent so kudos to whomever did that.
It would have been nice to see Mark jam with both of them but I doubt he could keep up.
Ep 6 is the one in which Mark really shines.Great warmth between him and Emmy which means Brian spends the episode being a massive fan of them both.
Mark reverts to candy store kid when they visit a guitar shop.
One criticism I do have of the show is that the episodes are too short and rushed in places. So many questions and opportunities are missed/ignored.
Overall though a really lovely show which I hope everyone here gets to see.
Roll on series two.

Really liked the Sam Fender & Emmylou programmes.
Particularly enjoyed the snippet of MK & Vince Gill playing 'Donegans Gone' with Emmylou & Brian singing along at the end!

They met in Summer 2015 on their tours. They both played here in Northrhine Westphalia and stay 1 week toether in Düsseldorf's 5 star Hotel
Breidenbacher hof. There they had several beers at the bar after the gigs and on the day offs.
For sure they know each other from that point on

Now now, let's not throw shame on anybody :)
Getting back into sensible debate, I thought the Cyndi episode was wonderful. I really enjoyed that MK. BJ and the producers had the balls to get into a bit of politics and it wasn't just the usual fluff of "and we recorded this song here, and then I did a gig there".
I didn't find Cyndi annoying at all, quite the opposite. I found her inspirational and I thought it was fantastic that the show gave us a chance to find out more about her. You go girl! Girls just wanna have fun after all!
Oh, and her dulcimer playing was fantastic and sounded beautiful as well. (Brian could learn some lyrics though, I'm sure they agree most of the songs in advance!)

Mark seemed a little off. Maybe he was tired.
I see that artists who are "connected to spiritual world" makes MK unconfortable.

Isn't there an old quote about Mark being surprised at all the songs being about God...? (Well, who wouldn't be?)

Since Mark to me comes across as intellectual, well-read, empirical, and not religious and/or spiritual.

It is true he did not hide his surprise. But did he feel uncomfortable? This we do not know.

His religious views are a mystery to me. And it's good that it's his personal business but I really like his songs that are somehow close to these topics:)
-
It is strange that Mark has many friends in Country Music. And MANY of them are very religious person.
MK is on of that persons who, apparently, feels awkward when there are people that are attached to african/american divinities. (i am not saying that MK is racist, xenofobic or similar)
When Carlos impersonates the producer that felt the ancient spirit (sorry i forgot the name), Mark, in my point of view, gost a bit lost.
And it is normal to many people that faces something that is completely away from his scenary.
Good thing about Carlos is that he is always fearless.
Look into his face, he is always ambitious.

I have watched episodes 1 & 2 and enjoyed them both, Mark looks relaxed and clearly enjoying doing something new, which is amazing at the stage of his career. I look forward to the next episode, I wonder if they are already thinking about series 2? :think

There are many intellectual people believe in a religion and/or are spiritual.
I think he may have looked uncomfortable being in the company of a great guitarist when he is now clearly severely limited. It must be difficult for him.

Just watched Ep3 Cyndi was great, really chatty, Mark and Brian hardly got a word in :) but she was good to listen to, I had forgotten how many good songs she has, and I didn't realise that she wrote a song with Mary Chapin Carpenter, another MK link there too. The embrace between her and Mark at the end was lovely too, you could feel the genuine affection from both of them.

Cyndi was fantastic. Like you I have gained an added appreciation for her songs that I have heard so many times over the years on the radio etc without really acknowledging how fantastic they really are. True Colours and Time After Time in particular.
The Sam Fender ep was also really good. 17 Going Under is a brilliant track. Interesting how he made it a mini Springsteen epic, with the sax and the glockenspiel, but unlike MK he actually sings in a Geordie accent!
And perhaps most significantly, Sam proposed doing a live show with him, BJ and MK AND MK AGREED! HE IS COMMITTED TO PLAYING LIVE AGAIN!
-
Omg! That would be fantastic!

Ok, I'll be honest; I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to VPN's. I'd love to see this show, so I got a membership of NOWTV for a month. Downloaded a few VPN's on Google Chrome, but even when I VPN-switch to the UK on NOWTV's website it says the content can't be seen from this country.
Does anybody know what VPN to use for that, to be able to view it from the Netherlands?
Or did anybody download the episodes already? ;-)

Hi Peter, what device are you using, pc, tablet, or something else? You need a vpn that tunnels all your Internet traffic through it. I don't think a chrome browser extension will do that. Go with one of the big boys and install their app.
Its also worth noting that these subscription services are wise to vpn users, traff8c from suspicious servers will quickly get blacklisted. My experience tells me that the big boys (nord, surfshark, etc) regularly change their servers to get round this.
Hope some of this helps.
-
ah, i figured as much; I tried a few free VPN's, but was guessing NOWTV is probably too smart and will see em through.
I'm trying to watch it on my MacBook Air.

You were right; I've got Nord now and it works. Thanks!

I’ll have to give Nord a try. Is it available as mobile app also? Would love to be able to watch the series from US but haven’t really done much VPN exploring…

I still have to watch the last episode, but what a treat this show is! So cool to see the 2 of them acting like a true team, both seem like naturally nice guys. And Brian Johnson is a tornado of positivity! Love it.

Yes, with Cyndi Lauper I haven't seen either :(

Unfortunately I haven't seen any of the episodes yet. :(

Vesper is wrong on length of bruce shows. I've seen 6 on this tour, shortest was 2 hours 45 mins. Longest was 3 hrs 10. No 2 hour show. Set lists more structured than before but around 80 or 90 different songs played so far.

Just watched the Nile Rogers episode, he is always a great one for stories, having worked for so many years with so many people, it is great seeing Mark out of his comfort zone too, sailing of into the sunset on a yacht with Nile Rogers and Brian Johnson is not something I thought I would ever see Mark doing!! Good On You Son.

MK was so relaxed in that episode and actually led the programme instead of Brian, Brian taking more of a backseat! MK didn't walk very well I noted but nonetheless he was in great spirits!

Does Boy George count? I've always liked his voice, and he'll certainly have a story or two to tell! :lol
Modify: Joni Mitchell, Joan Armatrading, Joan Baez

You need to add at least two women to the list.

They would all be excellent.
Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Madonna, Chrissie Hynde, Bonnie Raitt.
Brian already did Dolly. So to speak.

A very good choice :thumbsup
And Sade :)
-
Chrissie Hynde is only pretending, though ;)
-
For me Kate Bush, Dolly Parton, David Gilmour, Paul Simon and Joe Bonamassa.
-
You need to add at least two women to the list.
Not only women.
-
For me Kate Bush, Dolly Parton, David Gilmour, Paul Simon and Joe Bonamassa.
Dolly was already on with Brian solo.
Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel would be good.
-
And Sting, of course!
At least he's a Geordie, if that counts as a "minority". :lol
-

Then Suzanne Vega.

And maybe Jimmy Nail :)
-
That's a lot of Geordies now! :)
-
1. Albert Lee
2. Bryan Ferry
3. Neil Diamond
4. Rosanna Cash
5. Paul Simon
6. Willi Nelson

I have a strange impression that Carlos Santana is not looking towards MK.

I have a strange impression that Carlos Santana is not looking towards MK.
Not a lot. He's focusing on Brian and the camera, and looking for inspiration from the heavens above :)
But there's obviously a lot of mutual respect between them.
Santana seems a genuinely nice chap, I like his attitude and his spirit!
I just wish they could have played that song together ten or twenty years ago. Why did they take so long to meet?!
-
1. Paul Simon
2. David Gilmour
3. Sheryl Crow
4. Steve Lukather
5. Alison Moyet
6. Sting

All the episodes are fantastic. It is a great pleasure and joy when I can watch them. I love to watch MK from a different perspective. For me, these documentaries, films have the same value as, for example, those from years ago:
A Life In Songs
Phil Cunningham meets Mark Knopfler
Guitar Stories Mark Knopfler Documentary (with John Illsley)
Kris-b thank you very much :)
-
I agree all the way, Robson!
Brian and Mk are a great team, although I never thought I'd ever see them together in any format.
The speedvision documentary was great, too! I wish there was a better quality version of that.
-
"...although I never thought I'd ever see them together in any format"
Me too :) Amazing duo!
-
First I thought "chalk and cheese", but they're actually very similar in so many ways!
I'd just hoped to hear a bit more Geordie from Mark, his accent is so polished these days, but Brian and Sam Fender made up for it!
-
I have now watched the Carlos Santana episode, and I agree that he doesn't look at Mark that much, which is weird, of course it was great to hear the two guitar legends play together, although Mark was just taking a back seat, which makes sense as Carlos was the focus of the show, Carlos can certainly talk though, but most of it was So Far Away from Mark's musical world.
The next series I would like:
1. David Gilmour.
2. Enya
3. Mike Oldfield.
4. Mary Chapin Carpenter.
5. Phil Collins.
6. Shania Twain.
I think you need people with a rich musical history to make the interview interesting and engaging.
-
Was it not just that Carlos' seat was facing Brian's?
-

I don't think he ever spoke anywhere near like Brian! Mark has such a posh boy middle-class accent.
-
Probably not. Maybe it's a family thing. David doesn't have a thick accent either.

The only time you will heard the names Katy Perry and Justin Timberlake in a video with MK in.
He probably had to ask Sam who they were once the cameras were off

Oh yes! He listened to a lot of reggae music in the DS era (maybe today too), which he often mentioned on his radio broadcast (Sirius XM)

:) Maybe because the programs were not broadcast in Europe, only in the USA and Canada.

Maybe. But I'm just not a radio person, really. I was aware that he was doing it, but I just couldn't be bothered to look into it. Shame on me.

The radio broadcasts were great. A great job was done by quizzaciously, who wrote everything down.

Yes, absolutely and I still enjoy listening to an episode now and then.
There is lots of great music to discover.

Exactly! Me too :) I come back to these programs from time to time.

I hear some reggae influences in the following songs : In the gallery, Once upon a time in the west (mainly studio version), Ride accross the river (live), small potatoes, Early bird, Broken bones...
and of course PB (live) which was named "an irish reggae" in 82-83
on the contrary, Mark didn't want Jack playing reggae in TOL at Uniondale :lol :lol (between 14:00 and 14:10)

Thank you so much!

Oh yes! And David Sanborn (R.I.P)

Absolutely, one of the greatest players ever!
But in the youtube comments, someone complained that the guitar-sax combination was ruining the song! Weeelll... :lol :lol

it is known as the longest version of TOL

Awesome! Speaking of which, I watched the whole thing and now can talk about it. If I were to rank episodes for myself it would be:
1 Nile Rodgers
2 Emmylou Harris
3 Sam Fender
4 Carlos Santana
5 Cindy Lauper
6 Tom Jones
For some reason, I really loved how they connected with Nile Rodgers, how open he was about his drug addictions and whatnot, and he's a great music producer. On the other hand I feel like the more famous their guest was, the less interesting and more predictable it got, with Tom Jones being the best example. Not a lot of new stuff I learned from this episode in particular.
With that said, I really wish for more of these, their duo is brilliant, guests love them, they not interrupting each other all the time like Kemp and Pratt, and the cinematography is awesome. I love the no BS approach with this show, if something is bad they (Brian) will say it and he complements Mark's reserved personality perfectly.

Is there a torrent or way to watch this in the USA?
-
I believe the first season with Brian was available to stream on Amazon. Don't know how it is with this season. Anyone???
