This will be the first concert in a town that Mark has a strong connection to, I wonder if he has anything special planned to play or say?
-
I'll be there and also the following night in Newcastle.
See You.

Leeds... one of the cities in MK history. He started to play with Steve Phillips there and developed his finger style properly with him, and worked on his writing skills to ended being the songwriter he is and prepare him before going to London, with a bunch of songs written in the Leeds period...
I would had like to attend the couple of concerts in the very special cities in MK history as they are Leeds and Newcastle, but a family commitment didn't allow me to do it...
Don't miss the chance to visit the famous pubs in which MK used to play with Steve uner the name "The Duolian String Pickers"

Especially, a visit to the Grove Inn is essential! Perhaps have a drink there in the same room that MK played with Steve and Brendan! :)

The famous 1986 first "Hillbillies" gig

Maybe The Grove Inn is not in the Leeds Arena area but it might be a good meeting point for its significance?

It is very close to Leeds City Station, though! Just head down Neville Street at the side of the station, under the bridge and carry on over the river and canal and there is the Grove! :)
The place to visit near the arena is Leeds University on Woodhouse Lane and also the Pack Horse, opposite the university. The Eldon and Fenton are close by too.

Thank you for this first photo! I did not know that the first gig was already in 1986. So very soon after the world tour?

31st May 1986, The Grove pub, Leeds.
And they (Brendan, Steve and MK) played these:
Drop-kick me, Jesus
Tomorrow night
Your cheating heart
Tear it down
That's alright mama
Drinking wine
Morning train
Mabelene
Down on my knees
Bewildered
I believe
Love me tender
Move it on over
Ragged and dirty
Wedding bells
Lawdy Miss Clawdy
Boogie Woogie dance

Hedley Verity is probably best for eating! ;) All of those pubs near the university will be packed with students on a Saturday afternoon! It doesn't bear thinking about! :o
Edit: Just read that it is under new management and there are some good reviews.
The Pack Horse is further to walk to, especially for people who are coming by train. Hedley Verity is closer to the arena - only 4 mins.

I’d rather hoped that we’d get one or two changes for the UK shows, but it seems it’s business as usual.

Like all the others I have from the previous tours, they come 'flat' in a large white envelope....

Amazing show tonight. Mark on top form. I’d say best show I’ve seen since Manchester 2001 (and I’ve been to every tour). Mark said he thinks he should retire (booooos from the audience) but he loves making music too much and of course seeing you guys (huge cheers)!
Fingers crossed hey!
So looking forward to RAH on Tuesday ...

Hi all! Fantastic time last night and MK was in a very good mood and playing very well. Met up with the amiters, Ingrid, dmg, Knopflerfan and Mrs Knopflerfan, crimmer, Tunnel85 and Millionaire Blues before the show for a bite and a drink or two!
I loved the show and the set list worked well for me. I enjoyed everything, but I do think that it would be better without the trumpet, which seemed very raspy and sometimes out of tune. I liked the sax player, though.
I was on the 8th row in the middle and had decided not to make a run for the stage after Speedway, but when the time came and I saw Ingrid and dmg at the rail, I knew I just had to go to the front! It was amazing, listening to MFN and everyone was standing and clapping!
At the end, when MK was waving goodbye, I blew him a kiss and he looked straight at me and gave me the sweetest smile!
One thing, though, I think Piper would be better as it was previously, without the brassies! It was always perfect for me before with just MK playing the end solo. I know it's a bigger band now, but everyone doesn't have to play on every song. Sometimes less is more!
Just one more thing, the First Direct Arena in Leeds is pretty new and when MK was speaking there was a noticeable echo off the walls which was a bit unsettling. I don't know how it would sound on a usb stick.
Off to Newcastle today where I'm hoping for BIA and, maybe, something new. More from me later.....
-
Great report Val, I am glad from the view reviews I have read, that Mark's playing is getting better and better, I thought with the early shows it was just him being rusty, now he has a number of shows under his belt, he is getting into things :thumbsup Lucky you to get a sweet smile from Mark too.
-
Re new stuff. Probably was unlikely at Leeds as the kit all set off in the truck yet the band didn’t jump on the plane until show day.
I was sat in block 103. Not sure if they’ve changed the mix but the brass section wasn’t overpowering where I was - on speedway you could barely hear them so didn’t detract from enjoying the song. I liked hearing them on Piper and Going Home.
-
I had a great time. MK in very good mood. Band and MK in much better shape than Barcelona. Going to Newcastle now 😀 Val said it all, No additions needed
-
Great guys ! Even dmg seems happy, that says it all :)
Can't wait till RAH !

Listening to Silvertown Blues from the album I have never heard the keys like this before. Guy Fletcher creates a disturbing atmosphere like Angelo Badalamenti :)

I hope Mark will not withdraw this song.

He has withdrawn OES...
Only east-coast americans and 11 european cities will have heard it... A pity.

Knopflerfan, thank you for the videos!
Pleased you like them, two more to come :wave
Had such a fab evening and fab seats!!

We really need blueray because of these songs! Maybe I should take a banner "I want my DVD" to my gigs...
-
Many thanks, Knopflerfan, for the videos! It was lovely meeting you both again on Saturday! :wave
-
The sound of Mark's guitar is great from these and other videos, I can't wait to hear it on the USB downloads.

No media reviews (yet) from the Leeds show. Quite amazing.
-
It’s been a while but I only got back from my trip away late last night, so here is my review of the Leeds show. First of all I thought it was a very nice venue, apparently only about 4 years old, not too large and quite steeply raked seating behind the floor section, making the place appear smaller than it probably was. I though it sounded great too although other AMITers said they experienced some echo from their seats. Sadly tight airport-like security now.
Once inside I found my seat which was pretty nice and right at the aisle (more on that later). Nice start with WAM and you can usually tell from the start how Mark is playing that day - I knew he was in form. In Leeds his playing was impeccable. He was very intense and on StP especially he was playing some really great stuff. One little mistake on R&J outro solo was the only minor error of the night that probably most people didn’t notice. Val and I noticed a minor lyrics change on the song. Really nice Speedway which is better played with fewer notes as per this tour (brassies have been turned down in the mix as he is more reassured in his playing).
At the end most people in front of and around me stayed seated. The band walk off the stage, so being at the aisle I decide to go for it. I’m there for about 10-20 seconds and start thinking there’s nobody next to me… I turn around to find out I’m the only one down the front! Not to fear though because a further 10-20 seconds after that Ingrid came to my rescue, shortly followed by Val and Mr Val. Phew! So close when he played the iconic MFN and the beautiful Piper is wasted with the brassies. Don't like GH on the Gibson; the build-up is difficult to play well with it's thicker sound. Basically, it's a Strat song.
I though his playing in Leeds was excellent and he hasn’t played so well in years. The show does drag in the middle to be honest, although not so badly as it does in live streams or recordings. The show does feel incomplete without a TR song though and it was proved yet again that Speedway is not a showstopper no matter how well played it is.
Post show a quick chat outside with some wonderful old friends (and new too), some I see quite often, some only tour time and others I would see the following night in Newcastle. So we parted outside the venue, the fuddy-duddies back to their hotels while I took Ingrid to a nightclub but she took me to a pub instead!

Yes, the time has flown by since we were at the Leeds show! I still listen to the Leeds recording with pleasure - it's probably my favourite of all those I have heard. Sad that it may not happen again!

Really enjoyed my trip to Leeds followed by Newcastle the following day. After the show Ingrid and I went for a drink, then the following day I recall walking past the train station and hearing my name being called. It was Mr Superval with his head out the door of Prêt a Manger! I went in and had a chat then had a walk down to The Grove.
Met up with most of the gang in Newcastle the next night too and said our farewells.

Hi Val,
It was indeed an excellent concert and like you I keep listening to this particular show - hearing Silvertown Live was the absolute highlight!!
What a good little meet up we had before, and then after dmg & Ingrid went off for a night cap but we retired to bed!
Are you both getting on ok by the way Mr & Mrs Superval?

Sad to think that that was likely the last time we will all met up like that for a MK show...

Sad to think those meet ups most likely will never happen again - certainly before/after an MK show...hope all is well with you dmg?
Bored out of my skull, but fine thanks. I'm keeping check on you and Mrs Knopflerfan via her Facebook. Your garden's coming on a treat.

Cant believe it's been one year (almost) :o
Yes, the time has flown by since we were at the Leeds show! I still listen to the Leeds recording with pleasure - it's probably my favourite of all those I have heard. Sad that it may not happen again!

Mrs Knopflerfan has now left Facebook by the way...we are both fine. Very pleased with the garden especially as it's all coming alive again....we must catch up again when we can...

Hi Val,
It was indeed an excellent concert and like you I keep listening to this particular show - hearing Silvertown Live was the absolute highlight!!
What a good little meet up we had before, and then after dmg & Ingrid went off for a night cap but we retired to bed!
Are you both getting on ok by the way Mr & Mrs Superval?
We are both doing fine, thank you. We do a good walk every morning, about 5 miles, to our local reservoir, which is very beautiful with lots of woodland and the bluebells are extra-special this year. We are both working in the garden every day, too. Love to you both. Take care! :wave

How lovely, yes I went kayaking for the first time since the lockdown 'eased' yesterday in Poole harbour opposite Brownsea Island which was amazing. Our garden is coming on a treat too which is nice and like you we've been doing plenty of walking too...
Best wishes to you both..

It was the funniest live streaming the tatitos did in the whole tour. Even Mark's daughter was present that day. Sadly, I don't have recording of that streaming.
