Maybe a little bit early (and of course neither Mark's nor AMITers main focus) - but as I stumbled across a half-time ranking for this weeks UK album charts, I thought we could start a thread collecting the placement of DTRW in OUR countries, rolling in the next days.
I'm curious, if he will conquer 1st place again in Austria (after he succeeded with Tracker and Privateering) ... tough competitors this time though ...
Anyway - 3 days+ before the next announcement DTRW seems to start at 8 in UK:

8th is interesting. I don’t think MK will ever been mainstream as such so this isn’t a bad place to be at all

Tracker entered high if memory serves, maybe 2?
-
Tracker entered 3rd - highest peak position of his solo albums (Sailing 4th, Privateering 8th, Get lucky 9th)

I don't know about charts, but I have my own chart — the popularity of the chords I post. And seems like it's an ultimate low in that regard.
I remember an enormous hype when I released Privateering album chords, there was almost equal hype over Tracker chords.
But something happened on Down The Road Wherever and people just doesn't care. This is strange if you ask me.
Considering the overall commercial flavour of the album, it should get overhyped, but it won't. Why?
-
Maybe because the songs are all so flat?

I'm afraid so. This is pretty scientific results by the way. My theory is that the main experiment of this album was to let musicians decide and the end result is a great album for a band, not so great if you want to play songs on your own. You can say it about both singles, the opening track, and for the other 50% of the album.
I'm pretty sure and Mark said it in an interview, that he selects wether the song should be arranged by him or he just take it to the band and they arrange it. I hope Guy "Doc" Fletcher will elaborate on this process in his studio diary so we won't need to guess anymore.
-
Perhaps Mark has built up a new fanbase of Celtic music lovers and they haven't taken to this album. The old DS fans have perhaps fallen away, except the hard core ones like us. :think

Or the last tour has even caused more damage than we think.

This is really strange considering each album getting more and more popular, and Down The Road being very commercialised.
A good result for such a controversial album though. I really hope the next time we'll hear classic MK hitting №1 in all charts!

He's not done any promo on TV yet, only a few magazines and radio shows. I'm not sure many people regularly buy magazines these days either.
Perhaps the change in direction has alienated the Celtic music fanbase Mark has built up over recent years and some of the earlier fanbase has been lost. :think

He did Breakfast on TV last week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHY6w2QBZv8
I've been reading the comments on Amazon and although they started very complimentary, they began to deteriorate in the last few days and this one really was mystifying:
One star:
Sublime musicianship, perfect timing, one or two excellent song lyrics and a sound to die for. Pity its one big yawn from start to finish - apart that is from 2 or 3 tracks that have you rushing for the fast-forward because they are so toe-curlingly awful. What a huge disappointment !

Buble is terrible.
I really can't understand why anyone would buy a Buble record when they could buy a Sinatra record and hear the same songs done soooooo much better.
There are bigger c**** in the world than Buble, but I just haven't met them yet.
Anyhoo, 17 in the UK is terrible but most of my favourite artists wouldn't even chart so I don't care about these things anymore.
-
I don't think Mark will be too bothered by the chart position
-
Exactly, he probably thinks "who could give a flying toss"... ;D :lol

-
I think it's easier to be high in the charts in early September than in mid November, when any other artist's new album is already out
-
My reasoning makes me think of something else: with Tracker, a single sounding DS was enough to push the album to number 1 in many countries of Europe and sell a lot. Unbelievable! :disbelief
-
I was surprised about BOTDF release as second single two weeks before album in stores because MK usually needed just 1 song airplaying to wake up aficionados about forthcoming new work. Looking at charts, maybe was BOTDF a patch because GOYS didn't work at all?

Not agreeing with you there Dusty. I'll happily buy Buble Vinyl ta... On the subject of C****, Sinatra it seems was a huge one!!!!!!
-
I think it’s a little naive to think MK doesn’t care about chart position. I think he would care enough to keep British Grove Studios going and making enough money for the ‘next one.’
So, maybe not overall concerned with position but I think he would be interested to know how his work is doing. I can’t imagine British Grove is not an inconsiderate overhead, though a lot of the other band booking etc may cover this.

That's true! And that says a lot about how much Mark really cares about charts and selling numbers... If he did, how much does it take for him to manage a tune with a trademark Dire Straits sound...? Two hours, I guess...

Of course, but if you haven't heard it already - take a listen! It isn't all about Sinatra, it's the Nelson Riddle orchestra that is also the star! BTW I'm not a Sinatra fan or a fan of this type of music usually, but I have loved this album since I was a teenager - and that's a looong time! ;D It knocks Buble into the dust!

Me too. It would also make people decide not to buy the album if they weren't keen on either of the two songs. Not keen on one song and you would still buy the album.

Album Charts - Update

As per usual, Val is absolutely correct, Songs For Swinging Lovers is one of the greatest albums ever made (something no one will ever try to claim about Buble's output) and a huge part of that is Nelson Riddle's orchestration.
Any mid to late 50s Sinatra is superb, went downhill in the Reprise era.
Genuinely surprised to see a fan of serious music to defend Buble (who I assumed was only listened to by X-Factor watching housewives) but each to their own. :)

Obviously there is much more to music than the charts, though I have to say I am surprised that the album managed to sink all the way down to number 17, having been at number 8 midweek. I expected it to fall back slightly, but certainly not by that much! It’s not as if the album has been poorly received. It may be that the lead single did not get enough airplay to alert people to the fact that Mark had something new coming out. ‘Beryl’ was played on fairly heavy rotation and also had a distinctly early Straits-esque sound, which probably explains (at least in part) why Tracker charted so high after its first week. But then again, Privateering still hit the top 10 with virtually zero promotion. Perhaps it’s just a demonstration of how much more difficult it is now for older artists to attain chart success, what with younger generations, who will probably never know the joys of hearing properly crafted music, streaming and downloading all the autotuned hip-hop garbage that dominates the industry these days.
Still, regardless of charts and sales, as long as the music is out there for those of us who want to hear it and appreciate it, and as long as Mark is creatively satisfied in what he does, then that’s all that really matters in the long run.
-
Having seen the jewelcase and carton editions in the stores, to me it's two things: First, it seems the box is not available in many stores, just can't see it. Second, title and cover are just not interesting enough. We all know and love the song, but it's just plain boring and cliché... Imagine Matchstick Man, a view from high above to a small man in the slow .. Sky And Water ... Best possible album title to me .... One Song At A Time... Deptford pictures... you have to come up with some good ideas and not such loveless 3 Minute photoshop job...
Also, both singles got no airplay in Germany as far as I can see.

Yeah, you only have to listen to the radio to hear the mass generated drivel that is being produced. Fortunately I have created a 7 and 3yr old fan of GOYS and the 3yr old can even recognise MK when I play a video now
When we get the car my boy goes “can we have Mark ‘Opfler’ on”.

In Austria DTRW is starting at 4th position (Privateering and Tracker entered the charts on 1st place).
What I really don't get into my head is the fact, that the two worst placements are UK (17) and Ireland (20!) - WTH?????
Maybe the reason is some kind of "The Prophet has no honour in his own Country" ...

Most people still expect to get the DS feel when they buy a MK album. I gave a copy of Tracker to my cousin a while ago and he was very disappointed at first but then he played it on the road one day and liked it very much.

100% correct. I can remember when STP was due for release, they knew they had a good one so they worked hard on promotion, got Mark on things like the Parkinson show and were even careful with the album cover (apparently they had a number of different designs for it).
This time it's a boring cover and Mark doing the odd thing mostly on radio. No prime-time TV appearances. The fact he's been out of circulation so long doesn't help either.

Nail on the head. People still see MK as the DS front man and want a DS album. Those that have followed from GH know his style and music has changed.

Yes, right. I wrote it in a previous post: just a single DS style (Beryl-Tracker, What It Is-STP) to sell well the album. People recognize you for a very specific identity, and unfortunately his is still to be the frontman of one of the biggest rock bands in history. :disbelief

Nail on the head. People still see MK as the DS front man and want a DS album. Those that have followed from GH know his style and music has changed.
Could be worse!

Yes, right. I wrote it in a previous post: just a single DS style (Beryl-Tracker, What It Is-STP) to sell well the album. People recognize you for a very specific identity, and unfortunately his is still to be the frontman of one of the biggest rock bands in history. :disbelief
-
The three bonus songs should have been on the album, especially "Don't Suck Me In", because it is a DS style of song. I wonder who decides which songs go on the album? :think ::)

I think it's a marketing strategy: I do not know how much Mark likes, but I think the record company makes the final decision.
-
I thought Mark sends the record company all the songs, and they decide which will be B-sides/Bonus songs. But, I am sure Mark must give approval, hence Terminal of Tribute To not being on Tracker!!

I second that. I don't know who was the genius behind it but unless they don't care at all about sales that was the dumbest decision ever made.
-
I seem to remember reading Ed Bicknell had a say on which songs ended up on the albums which may have contributed to some commercial success and may also have seen the change in style after STP when he "left." I'm positive he'd have pushed to have Don't Suck Me In on that record!

I really miss Ed
-
0 promotion 0 sales.
That could certainly be a reason, but in Germany there was no promotion to and yet the album is also in the 2nd week in the top 5.
He could be higher I think.
I really see no cheaper Standard CD edition on e.g. Amazon which costs around EUR 12.
Here you have to buy the EUR 16/17 Deluxe Edition which could be too much Money for normal CD buyers and non fans.
A bit strange

I wonder how much copies have actually been sold.
They say that with streaming and illegal downloads sales are way down on 20 years ago anyway, so with poor chart placings as well I wonder if the album is actually in the black.

Unfortunately this is becoming a good tax write off.

I see Greece in the Charts, but In Greece the album was almost impossible to find. Maybe downloads? At the release date I found only the CD versions, in extremely limited quantities. The deluxe CD sold out immediately. After 2 weeks I was lucky to find one simple vinyl copy of the album, which was kept for me by a friend at a record shop. The deluxe box arrived in only a couple of shops in January! By then I had already ordered it from a foreign site, afraid I was going to miss it.
Still, there is shortage of CDs. I don't know if it has something to do with Greece or if it was a general distribution problem, though. I heard some conflicting views on the matter, although in Amazon and the German site I finally ordered from, it was available the whole time.
By the way, although I think this was a miscalculation, at the same time there was a shortage of Queen albums (maybe they didn't expect such a demand for Queen music following the film release) and also a shortage of The White Beatles album deluxe edition. I wonder if this has to do with strict contracts that companies have to fulfill with major outlets, like Amazon, before fulfilling all other orders.
