Couldn’t find this mentioned anywhere else..
I knew I had heard this melody somewhere else.. of course it’s blues. But did Mark just wrote new lyrics to this song?
Rolling man by Fleetwood Mac...

I would say that both riff/melody are inspired by the classic "Crosscut saw"

Does anyone remember what Mark said before this song?

Guy said in its forum that Playtime deluxe was a new song that sounds like an oldie...
It's not the first time MK gets the melody of an existing song and put his lyrics (miss you blues, Oklahoma ponnie's...).
-
It is true. And this is marked in the booklet of the album Privateering and Tracker. But he did not say anything at the concert ::)
-
Right, the song is not that original but the performance was refreshing.
-
Wow – identical indeed, even the rhythm switch in the middle. Nothing wrong with that - Dylan does it all the time - as long as you give credit where credit is due. Which I'm sure Mark would do, like he did with Miss You Blues or Oklahoma Ponies, if this song should end up on an album. Hearing this now, thought, I doubt it will. Maybe as a bonus track.
Personally, I love song traditions being carried on like this – but only because I know that Mark can deliver original stuff, too. As long as I get both, I'll be happy.

It has a certain taste, a negative one.. He just could have played Crosscut Saw... does anyone think it is really a new MK song now just because of his pretty stupid lyrics? There is absolutely no difference..

I wonder what ourselves would say if someone recorded Sultans of Swing changing the lyrics. Because, you know, that's what Mark did there.

using an old blues which is in "common domain" is a different thing than using an original "recent" song imho
-
Exactly. Thank you Tobben for Rollin Man Fleetwood Mac. I remembered that Thyme Wild Mountain written by Francis McPeake (A Shot At Glory) is marked on the album and of course The Mist Covered Mountains - trad. (Local hero)

Good point. I also agree with LE and certainly hope this does NOT appear on the new album. I have always admired Mark for the very fact he wrote and performed all his own songs and Miss You Blues is already one blot too many. He must have drawers full of old tunes, melodies and lyrics so I don't understand his reasoning for the likes of MYB or this.

But there have never been covers on his albums. Miss You Blues and Oklahoma Ponies are not cover songs

Mark sings different lyrics to fit someone else's tune and that's my point - they weren't his songs. Just the same way Dire Straits Legacy play cover songs. ;)

I know. I just wanted to write that Mark does not record covers. And it makes me happy. :)

Strange thing to be happy about, as if it's you who doesn't record covers ;D Not every one of us can write songs, if one knew how to learn that skill, everybody's songwriters now. Imagine that! But Mark would be at the top of the game just as well (skill or not skill).

MYB and OP were recorded. If he did this his whole career then he would never have written a complete song his entire life! This sort of thing is no better than the likes of Justin Bieber and his ilk. Mark is much better than this. This does not make me happy. Not at all.

Strange text. I am not a musician. Mark has a lot of ideas and does not need someone else's songs on his albums. Can I enjoy it? Thank you :)

You do not understand me. I'm not waiting for a new MK album with cover songs like Rod Stewart's or Bob Dylan's last albums. That's all

It's getting harder and harder to write anything here without being attacked or debated. :(

Debate is the main thing of a forum.

Hahaha, you are right about that! :D
Sorry, what I meant to express is my frustration with the debating of another person's tastes or feelings.

having in mind that i don't know the whole background when it comes to these songs in particular I could only say from my point of view in general. I look at it bit different, as Mark like to say, The Song is the King, and If he, as a proven artist, sees the song "wearing" the new dress, it definitely worth it for me then (and I believe for the song as well lol!). So I welcome that when comes from a songwriter and artist!

I’d say that he crossed the line this time around though. Even some guitar licks are identical lol
