Very interesting. Looks legit as on the French site listed under the virgin label.
Timing may be coincidental but I have a hunch this is a release for the UK Record Store day. A nice 2 x 7 inch set would be great. Let's see though eh.
Also listed on UK Amazon but no ability to pre order.

MK news:
Many of will will be aware that back in 1977 DJ Charlie Gillett played the original Dire Straits demo of Sultans of Swing on his Radio London show. Later, Charlie issued two compliation CDs under the generic title Honky Tonk Demos. One of the tracks he featured was the '77 demo of Sultans.
Now four tracks from the original '77 Pathway studios demo tape are being released on 2 vinyl singles, three of which are previously unreleased:
Disc : 1
1. Sultans of Swing
2. Water of Love
Disc : 2
1. Down to the Waterline
2. Wild West End
These releases will be available in record shops from the 18th April which is Record Store Day in various countries. http://www.recordstoreday.com/

Dear J...
Who's J.?
-
I cant find the direct link to the DS record in that website.
Is there any direct link to buy it as well?
-
J? Maybe John Stainze?
-
As far as I can see this release is only available in the UK! Can't find it anywhere else then at the UK Recordstoreday site.

As you can see in the firsts posts in this thread, it is listed in several amazon sites...

It is also listed in the Netherlands record store day site and Amazon.fr offers it for pre-order, at 12 Euros. Which is peculiar, since such releases were suppossed to be available through b&m record shops.

I take it these will just be versions that are already available on the Demo's bootleg? If so, nothing to get too much excited about then.
-
dmg I am very happy for at least 3 reasons. First because we get a piece of history officially released in a format I love. Secondly (and most important) because this reveals a change in the MK attitude to release demos and songs not already included in the albums we know. Thirdly because since the new deal with Virgin EMI, (Universal), we might expect more such treats! Remember that we are very close to 25 years from OES!

If this is official stuff indeed it should not be that crappy quality from the demo bootleg! Only Sultans was released in decent quality (even on a CD), on the bootleg we only have noisy mono (!) recordings with some bizarre EQ, and 5% too fast

Boy do I hope you're right!

It's a pity that they release a piece of history of the band and they cut a part of it, which is "Sacred Loving", just because it was a David Knopfler´s song. We know it didn´t make it in the record, but it was part of the demo, think that if they had very few money and they consider to put that song on it, and sending it with the rest of the song chasing their chance... that song deserved to be in this release...
But it´s MK, and DK is not allowed.

This is from markknopfler.com, so it seems it was remastered, and should be the original tape recording :)

The Honky Tonk Demos feature four songs that were part of the original demo tape Dire Straits recorded in July 1977 at London’s Pathway Studios. These four songs made their way to the desk of legendary BBC London DJ Charlie Gillett. On July 31, 1977 Gillett played the version of “Sultans Of Swing” here on his Honky Tonk radio show that led to the group being signed to Phonogram soon after.
With three tracks previously unreleased, this double pack, mastered for vinyl at Bernie Grundman’s, is a true piece of history. The Honky Tonk Demos is a tribute to the early artistry of Dire Straits and the remarkable musical passion of DJ Gillett, who left us five years ago in March 2010.
honkytonk
The Honky Tonk Demos will be available on vinyl for Record Store Day 2015 which falls on Saturday, April 18.
-
I don't remember David releasing Sacred love afterwards (as a new recording) either. I guess contractual perplexities with the publicing company both then (when David was still a part of DS) and after the 90ies when DS were only MK and JI. So maybe DK can issue a version of the song now?
-
fingers crossed this ends up online somewhere? I wasn't sure whether to preorder from the french amazon since it listed it as a cd single? has anyone else preordered?
-
I have. Despite the CD description, further down it states that there are two discs. If the 7'' single has a reason to include only one song in each side, what reason do they have to split 4 songs in two CDs? So my guess was that there must be a typo, and they mean either 2 X 7'' or 1 X CD. Either way I want it, that is why I ordered it!

Yes! I saw that too. I managed to find a preorder from an Italian music store on ebay. I went for it since the seller had 100% positive feedback and a money back promise. ebay ad states that it's 2 7" records. Very interesting!
-
Yeap, it is the one we are talking about. Of course taking pre-orders, (and pre-paying for the goods) is not on ebay policy. Anyway, it would suit me too, but he charges like 15 Euros for delivery to Greece, while the record costs slightly less than 15 Euros!

I thought record store day is next Saturday!
Thanks Maroretto!
Orderd from Amazon.fr and received notification yesterday that it was dispatched!
-
Forgive my ignorance but I have two questions:
1. Looking at those scans, I am confused by the date and the details. Are these the Honky Tonk demos that DS sent to Charlie Gillett? Or are they versions of the same songs especially recorded by DS for broadvcast by Charlie Gillett some tie after he had received/played the demos?
2. Like someone earlier, i was told that the only way to get this set was to go to a participating bricks and mortar record shop. The whole point of Record Store Day was that "B&M" record shops would get unusual records that buyers could not buy on-line. It was to encourage punters to seek out (and patronise) their local record shop, so how come these discs are being sold by Amazon?
-
I don't think that there are other versions of the songs than the ones we already know, even through unofficial releases. So, this means that we are talking about the demos they have sent to CG and he aired them on that particular day of July.
As for the second question, I think that the record store day has never been about the small record stores, since it begun when the majority of them have long been shut down. So the number of stores has become quite small (especially in Greece) and I guess it makes sense to give it to the Amazon "vinyl" department. Anyway, there are several reasons to reconsider the record store day function and rules, because many of the releases are just cash ins for the big record companies that after finding that vinyl is beginning to sell again, try to take advantage by creating expensive and not quite so limited editions of music desire - abilities.
-
I've had Zero success trying to find a Sydney store that will have this :(
Apparently shops involved just get random allocations from the massive list of stock to be issued, some really interesting releases too, like an old Chet Atkins LP and coloured Johnny Cash vinyl...
-
You can buy almost every record store day release online, adn not every single shop has them. The owner of my favourite record store has told me he won't be selling the Honky Tonk Demo's for example. It's mostly the idea of record store day and the in-store musical performances that make people come to the store.
-
Thanks for the replies, folks.
I'm not as knowledgeable about DS as you lot but, when I see a phrase like "27.07.77 Charlie Gillett Session", I take it to mean a session specifically for Charlie Gillett's radio show, either recorded on or broadcast, on 27 July 1977. I had always assumed that DS had recorded these demos for sending to both radio shows and record companies, in the hope that they would lead to a recording contract. Did DS, having recorded the demos, simply make one copy and send that copy to Charlie Gillett?
As for Amazon, you are right. Amazon UK lists it but, when there have been RSD releases by Mr Bob in the past, I am pretty sure that they were only available at "B&M" record shops and not on Amazon.

I called the store closest to where I live and asked him to bring copies of it to me and my friends, so he will be sure to sell it and we to buy it ;)

No they are the band demo recorded to be sent to record companies. Mark liked the Honty Tonk radio show that played demo tapes submitted by artist, so he sent a copy but was not aware it aired as it was done without noticing them.
2. Like someone earlier, i was told that the only way to get this set was to go to a participating bricks and mortar record shop. It was the aim in the fist years of the RSD to release collectable records only to be purchased in record stores but the operation grew, became worldwide and the large business took over.
This system works in area where records dealer still exist but for the rest of the world this just sucks.
I remember the pain when David Gimour released the Gdansk concert. All the worldwide editions, even the high price deluxe boxset with extra live CD, were missing the audio CD track of "Wots... Uh, The Deal". But a special operation was organized and you could have a "free" 1 track extra CD single when buying the Gdansk concert from selected independant US record store. Long hours trying to find one with a website featuring worldwide shipping...
-
In Greece I have asked at 5 record stores and they wouldn't accept special orders for the record store day, but two of them promised to let me know if the specific one comes.
ds 1984 I bought the vinyl edition of the Gdansk concert and was never aware of the fact you mention!
-
Thanks for the update. Noticed the new "2015 Dire Straits Limited" copyright. Really looking forward to this release.
-
Most shops here are saying, Friday we will publish our list of RSD releases...
I will still go to my local, because as Hugo says, they're available online and I couldn't resist. Bless you eBay!
-
got the mail from amazon yesterday that my copy has been shipped. yeaah...
-
I noticed that this title is suspiciously missing from the RSD list:
http://download.recordstoreday.com/free/RSD_2015_RELEASES_WEBSITE.pdf
I'm sort of 50/50 on whether I'll head down to my local shop on Saturday and battle the crowds to try to find it. Not all that crazy about the other releases on that list.
-
Ordered it at Amazon as well. Indeed no queues to beat and so on next saturday ;-)
-
I received it yesterday, but it is a 2 x 7 inch vinyl set. MK News mentions it is 2x 12 inch? Error on MK News or are there two editions released? Does anybody know more about it?
-
I'm just curious if you folks are buying it for collecting reasons or because you actually have an LP-player? :)
-
just come to realise that i forgot it is not a cd...
shit..lol
-
It's a 2X7'' release. Amazon.fr has it as a CD, so the mistake is not just MK news. I do have a record player and the majority of my music collection in in vinyl format, but of course that only enhances the thrill of collecting!
-
I don't have a LP player but I'll have to buy one.
For those who listened to these Honky Tonk vinyls, what are your reactions? Are the demos the same as the Early Demos cd?
-

I think this is "official stuff" so it won't be a copy of a crappy quality bootleg.
-
I bought one for...nostalgia
As I don't intend to play it on a turntable, I let it unopened. Collector item.
Next is to find a good needle-drop version of it as Amazon does not offer Autorip for that one.
-
Just received very bad news. This record is not going to be sell in the Spanish stores despite it was reserved...
Apparently it´s going to be sell just in the UK, Italy and some other countries, but not Spain.
I don´t get it, I was happy with the Record Store Day, but now I find that is just another commercial and silly campaign empty of meaning...
-
Strange. The release is not listed on the official list of albums to be released tomorrow:

-
I'm lined up in a 'significant' queue an hour and a half before opening at the only shop in Sydney that says they have it... I just hope Dire Straits are still uncool.
-
Could it be 1000 copies worldwide only? Since I have yet to receive my copy from the Amazon.fr and not quite sure if the product is a 2X7;;, I have snt a friend of mine who lives in London in search of it! Should it be the same with my pre-order I will sell it to anyone interested!
-
The stock has been delivered all this week to stores here and lots of shops are saying that boxes can also be delayed by customs.
There's a few veterans of RSD in this queue and they are saying many of the releases get re-prints eventually anyway.
-
Woo hoo got one!! Unable to see how many store had, but there were only <5 with a green spine
-
Hurray for Honkies! Do you have the demos on CD? If you do, please let us know if there is any differences, actual improvements!
-
Well don't panic. I walked up the road to the smallest record store in Sydney (Mojos) and with no queue and just browse they had two Honky Tonk 7". Still one per customer but maybe not so limited..?
No mate, I've heard YouTube, so I am really looking forward to listening to these. Right now I'm a long way from home, so will post in much later :)
If my Italian eBay copy arrives, I'll have 3, so again if anyone has no luck and Really wants one I could sell one of them, no profits. Got to keep the love on AMIT.
-
The quality is superb !! Nice separation sound of instruments, pristine mix and a raw quality of guitar amp sound like it's in your room.
Anybody compared to bootlegs?
-

Congrats! Breakfast now, then down to queue :)
-
Of the two record shops in Sydney I went to this morning, one of them had their own detailed labels on the records.
The Chet LP says "Limited to 2000"
The Syd Barrett "limited to 12000" !!
Honky Tonk merely says "limited edition"
Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze says, nothing!
I think the DS record has been distributed widely and I don't think anyone will have too much difficulty obtaining one over the course of the month.
-
Forgive my ignorance, can someone fill on the history for me now?
I'm aware the band recorded demos with JIs money and this was given to Charlie? What happened next?
Did he just play it on his show, or play for influential people etc?
Been listening all afternoon, so good :)
-
Got my copy half an hour ago :)
There was no long queue before the shop, I was the first there 15 min before they opened, about 10 people appeared until the shop opened at 10:00. I was the first in the shop, got one copy out of the two the shop received, the person behind me got the second copy , which means both Dire Straits singles were the first items to be sold and were sold out at 10:01.
It is the original recording (not a remix of the 8 track recording), the quality is great (stereo !!!). Unfortunately the intro of DTTW is missing!!!!! :smack
As the bootleg quality is really bad, there are a lot of details to discover for the first time. WoL and WWE are in fact the National - sounds like an electric on the bootleg, doesn't it ;). The two guitars on DTTW are separated to the left and right channel just like on the album.
Great to listen.
Another highlight: the picture in the inside is of great quality, much better than we had it before (compare here: http://www.mk-guitar.com/2009/01/22/gear-on-one-of-the-first-dire-straits-gigs-on-the-clapham-common-bandstand/ (http://www.mk-guitar.com/2009/01/22/gear-on-one-of-the-first-dire-straits-gigs-on-the-clapham-common-bandstand/) ).
Only the picture of the first gig on that lawn behind Farrar House is earlier.
-
Maybe should start another thread about RSD, but Ingo, if you see the Chet Atkins LP (My Brother Sings) don't hesitate it's really cool. Only 3 originals known, and now 2000 prints for RSD.
Chet used a split cable from the pickups with puts the 3 bass strings in the left channel and the 3 high strings right. But he's playing normally, not twice. The liner notes explain all and it's really cool to listen to...
Ok enough nerdy LP talk :)

Its 6:45 am here in Canada. Heading to my local record store to see if they have a copy
of Honky Tonk Demos.

-
If you're on the capitalist wheel of good fortune, don't hold back. I regret already not buying a few more LPs. I had my list, but amazingly at the counter I just thought 'That'll do'
What's also amazing about this day is (if you follow your countries RSD page on facebook) the amount of things I saw, that now people are literally begging for! You immediately start to think, "maybe I should've bought that strange Paul McCartney album..." and lots more.
-
It also turns out that both of the bootleg sources we had were not a 'normal' mono version of the original (stereo) recording (both stereo channels --> one mono channel ) but in fact only the left channel. So we really hear something new here, e.g. David's rhythm guitar on DTTW which is almost exclusively on the right channel!
-
We only have one music store in town - HMV - which is not participating in Record Store Day, so I wasn't able to get a copy >:( I'll have to see if there is one left on Monday in the nearest independent music store, which is in the town where I work - 15 miles away.
-
I went down into London about half ten this morning and queued at Rough Trade records. No Honky Tonk demos left! Was going to skip over to soho but in the end just ordered a copy on eBay for the price I would have paid plus train fare.
Did anyone in the UK have any luck getting a copy in store? I did pick up a couple of other records...regretting now not getting that Doors record but tomorrow Is another day and I wait to see whether the "highly limited" edition records find their way quickly into standard issue in the next few weeks
-
No DS for me too. They didn't bring it in Athens and my friend in London was working today and couldn't go downtown. In fact the only shop I knew was participating in RSD in Athens didn't have it (or many of the expected releases) had so many people I lost interest in looking after 10 minutes. And many of the releases were so expensive I couldn't spare 12 Euros for a single or 58 for the White album. Nevermind, I have all the music I can listen and then some more! :) If I am lucky I will get it from amazon

happy with my copy. nice packaging. great version of SoS indeed. still need to listen to the others. actually do not own a record player myself, lol.
-
I was lucky, I go to the store around 11:30 as I was working today.
The store had ordered 5 copies, had 3 left when I got there.I picked up one
mybe I should have got 2, but I left them there for other Dire Straits supporters.
Will give it a spin tomorrow.

Three guitars! There is a third electric guitar in the center, played by Mark, during the middle solo and the last verse! :)

Just a thought. Maybe those people who don't have record players shouldn't have bought the vinyl so that those people who do have record players could have bought the release and sent you the songs.
Don't fear , I am sure this will turn up on digital soon enough. The record company have made the investment in brining this to market, may be July time but I feel sure it will materialise. Sly and the Family Stone vinyl only concert release from Epic UMG turns up as a 4cd box set in July. Maybe we will get the full set. Or more. Wishful thinking
Let's just hope for a digital release

Oh yeah, maybe, one day people will realise that piracy is when you copy (i.e. advertise) something rather than steal it, like a thief.
Just listened ‘My Brother Sings’ LP by Chet Atkins, this thing was sold for $8,100 one day because it's so rare, but it was reissued on LP.
And it was uploaded same day on the internet. By the way, highly recommended LP: http://www.sundazed.com/shop/rsd2015_r4.php

I found this picture in facebook, apparently it's a scan of the real tape published by Charlie Gillett in his site many years ago http://www.charliegillett.com (http://www.charliegillett.com)
I was searching looking for the post or wherever it was originally published but I didn´t find it, anyway, here it is:

Type "record store day 2015" into search for the stock left. They have Honky Tonk & Chet Atkins still listed....
Great Sydney store. No stupid eBay prices, just our normal over prices Australian rates :)

Well, it's obvious which track was left out. Pity really, since it's still an early Dire Straits recording.
-
When they were broke, they spent their only money in recording that demos. MK agreed in spent some of that money recording "Sacred Loving", if it was that bad, surely MK would had said no way we are wasting our only money recording it.
Sacred Loving is part of that demos.
-
Is it just me, or is Sultans of Swing the only track of the 4 that are great quality? I feel like there is a fuzziness in the vocals in particular on the other 3 tracks and maybe the mix is not as good as SOS.

i am one of those people visitor. reason is simply. i ignored the fact that it said vinyl, automatically assuming it would be digital. sorry to have spoiled the fun for you. i will now buy a record player by the way.

How I hate that I had to make a digital copy from the vinyl again (personal safety copy of course). If it was not illegal to post a link here, I'd think that sharing it with others who bought the single (or would have bought it if it was available everywhere) can't be wrong really, but well...
I have some distortion on the tracks, especially at the end of the songs where the radius on the single becomes smaller. I am not sure if it is because the needle is not new anymore, or if it unavoidable.

Is it sounding good? Waiting for my single (well and a turntable...)

The Sultans version from that rare Honky Tonk Demos CD sounds much better to me, the other three tracks sound at least lightyears better than what we had before.

Anyone can do good quality mp3 versions for our ipods or mp3 players?
... but I will not do the upload :think
So, as there are no cd or digital options for it, the fans that doesn't have a lp player won't be able to listen
it even you bought it :smack
Just a thought. Maybe those people who don't have record players shouldn't have bought the vinyl so that those people who do have record players could have bought the release and sent you the songs.
Don't fear , I am sure this will turn up on digital soon enough. The record company have made the investment in brining this to market, may be July time but I feel sure it will materialise. My comment was a bit tongue in cheek as they say here in the UK....I actually quite like having to hunt for s record now in an age when everything is pretty much easy to get immediately and on demand.
Take a look at the Project Debut turntable or if you can find it, a cheap second hand Technics deck.

I bought it yesterday and will receive it somewhere in the begin of May.
As I don't have a player for it, it's for the collection.
It was discussed before, but is someone willing to share it?

Here we are on a fan forum openly discussing piracy ( or possibly privateering ;D! ) :think
I managed to get hold of the demos in an independent record shop in the town where I work ( as the town where I live doesn't have one! ) .
The plastic sleeve the shop had them in indicated a total run of 1000 copies.
Because I'm old and sad, I still have 2 hi-fi separate stack systems in the house & fortunately both still have their turntables, so I have had no problem playing the 45rpm singles.
A couple of observations - and this of course is just my own opinion:
For the average vinyl single or LP, unless you are a serious audiophile most middle of the range turntables will do the job, and let's be honest, how many of us are going to be giving up our very convinient & high quality CD players and rebuilding a collection of vinyl. I found playing the singles quite inconvenient as they needed a wipe with a record cleaning brush before playing and then I had to very careful not to knock the desk where the turntable is mounted (I'd forgotten how easy it was to make a record "jump" ! )
The demos themselves:
Although I was prepared for a rougher version of the songs, I was quite surprised at how "un-developed" the electric guitar fills & solos were in Sultans & Waterline. Mark obviously put a lot of time into polishing these 2 tunes up before recording them for the album. On the other hand, Wild West End & Water of love which both feature the National were much more like the album versions (although still rougher and with a few different lyrics) .
To be honest, they won't be getting a lot of play on my turntable, but I'm glad to have that bit of "history" in my collection.

Nice post. I think that's the point of buying it even if you don't have a player...

Thank you very very very much!
I wonder what that date means, the day DS recorded it or the day CG broadcasted it.
Today I had a nice dream. Our beloved TWM found more tapes in boxes labelled "Honky Tonk" and in one of them it was a recording of the original broadcast by Charlie Gillett of the five songs... And then I woke up :(
