I've asked Guy about this. But I think he actually gaved permission just because this guy is 56 :-D

I was under the impression that, once a song is published, anyone can sing it, as long as the royalty is paid and as long as there are no substantial alterations.  I'm sure "Mr Bob" doesn't have to give permission every time a song of his is covered by another performer. And I'm sure Mr Bob doesn't have to seek or get permission every time he covers somebody else's song.

However, if a song is used for some other commercial purpose (such as being used in a radio, TV or cinema advertisement) or for some similar purpose (in a political rally, political advertisement or party political broadcast, for example), I believe that the situation is different. In these cases, the song is being used to "sell" a product, service or some other particular message and the composer would be able to veto its use. If a particular recording  of the song is being used, I'm not sure if the singer can stop its use.

Can anyone enlighten us?

I think you are correct twm.  There was a case about 10 years ago where founder members of The Doors fell out over the use of one of their songs being used in a car commercial.

Cadillac offered up a multi-million deal that Krieger and Manzarek wanted to accept but that Densmore was against, calling on an agreement the band had made when Jim Morrison was alive to never use their music in any commercial.

So it seems that ads need permission.  Anyone recall the T-Mobile one with MFN?

Lol..... and the reason Will mentioned Sting was for what exactly? numpty.... lol. R&J is used quite a bit in these types of shows, not so long ago there were a couple of people singing it on Xfactor Australia.

I'll say it's great for people to cover one of Knopfler's finest but jeez I wish they were even close to his version. I'm a stickler for the chords being played correctly on R&J. Open G with Capo EVERY TIME. (btw, I'm clearly not complaining about this version)

Strange that he said his wife wanted him to sing it because it was their wedding song.  Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy and they played it at their wedding!  When are they getting a divorce?  ;D

Why not?  :)

When it comes to the song, it includes an everlasting plot: a good boy loves a bad girl.
That works just as well in reverse order too   :)
So who knows what kind of thoughts his wife kept to herself...  ::)

Yeah, did he really think it was a Sting number?  Find that hard to believe.

In one way, nice to hear a favorite song of mine being performed. In another way, I'm not a big fan of all these talentshows (including The voice, which is a dutch-made tv format).

I'm not a fan of these shows, because very often, people who actually have a great deal of musical talent, but who are not so easy to market/sell, loose out to people who lack musical talent, but who do have the looks (read: are easier to sell/market)........

Oh and here in The Netherlands, it happens often enough, that winners of The voice of Holland become a big hype for a short time, but after say about a year, they are almost forgotten....

True words, Maaike. And more or less the same. All those forgotten "stars" finally end up in shows like Dancing with the Stars (it's called Let's Dance in Germany) or, even worse, they go to the jungle (I'm a celebrity.. get me out of here!)....

The guy is trying too hard. This song is supposed to be sung with soul and even if there are other good ways to perform this song different from Knopfler's way, this is not one of them.

I really do not understand the jury being so impressed with this.

It's as if they are impressed with the song itself ....... I can totally live with that :P

R & J is still one of my favourite MK songs and it never fails to give me goosebumps when Mark performs it in front of me, but this interpretation did nothing for me.   It would have been nice if Mark had been acknowledged as the writer though - surely someone on the panel knew who wrote the song.

That certainly seems to be the vibe at the start, a testament to the song. In 'popular' music many of Marks songs are forgotten, and even celebrities are excited to hear them again.
Mark has always been huge in Australia though. I thought this dude added his pub/country experience to r&J as best as he was able.
I'll ask my wife how he progresses - she watches these silly shows ;)

Maybe he was after the Killers version of R&J.

Didn't like The Killers version. I get the feeling like they're trying too hard too express (with singing i mean) the emotions described in the song.
But that's just my opinion, it's still a good cover but I guess I like the original too much  :)

Not sure if this the right thread for this but it's interesting in itself and does contain some comments about control over the use of songs:-

It's a bit pointless singing a Dire Straits song on a singing competition really, because Mark may not be the world's greatest singer, but his voice works very well for his own songs, and on The Voice etc people over sing a song like Romeo & Juliet.

I'm not impressed by the way the song is delivered. It's nowhere near Mark's delivery of the song. That said, I think this peformance could mean alot of new young DS/Knopfler fans who never heard Mark's music. I am sure there are atleast a few kids who never heard Mark's music and start looking for the original of the song. And they will be blown away by the original... I was 16 when I heard Mark's music for the first time. Dropped halfway in a DS special on Veronica television in 1988. Which had to do with promotion of the compilation album Money For Nothing. After Money For Nothing and Private Investigations i was hooked!

And before you know it we can welcome loads of new fans here on Amit  ;D

I remember that tv show very well... MK seated in a Hotel in London where you could see the red Buses through the window going all the time.. with some clips of Chet Atkins and friends and Hank B. Marvin at the Wembley Arena show.. most of the clips I saw for the first time, too, also being 16 or 17...
Seems we are at the same age?

I'm from July 1972 so if you were 16 around that time like me then indeed we must be around the same age. I remember it was broadcasted somewhere around spring here in the Netherlands and is was a rainy day. If it hadn't rain that day I might have not discoverd Mark's music. I was really into Michael Jackson back then.

Or just as bad, they go and try to jump off a diving board and dive into a swimmingpool ("Sterren springen" in dutch, or "Celebrity Splash"). Simply terrible......

Maybe it would have been a good idea to lock those kind of celebrities up  in John de Mol's new tv creation called " UTOPIA"
For everybody outside the Netherlands , this tv-program is coming your way  soon, so  ur warned ;D
