Hi!

For the 60th anniversary of the Stratocaster, Fender has selected 64 Stratocaster hits to compete about the title

Hmmmm. Probably but not in that order. And I do think that men's nipples are quite pointy, at times.  ;D

I am in this case, but I didn't hesitate and chose Sultans.

simply because the choice is not what song/artist you like the most, but what song do you think is the most iconic strat sound

and IMHO, Comfortably numb (although great song, gerat solo, great tone) is NOT a typical strat-ish sound, neither is Layla (although Iove this song)

to me, it was more difficult to choose between :
Apache
nowhere man
Sultans

because these are the 3 most typical stat-ish sounds iMHO, I mean among the songs listed

after thse 3, I would add the two Jimi's ones : little wing and wind cries mary

and maybe the 2 from SRV (pride and joy, and let's dance) and Cocaine

wicked games is another one, but I think it could sound almost the same on a gretsch

but songs like smoke on the water, bad love, layla, owner of a lonely heart, etc... although played on atsrat, are not the best examples of a typical strat-ish sound IMHO

for clatpon , old love, wolderful tonight, layd down sally, etc...are far more strat-ish than Bad love imho

I don't understand these choices

OK, voted, 10 votes ahead for SOS. But it was  a tough decision. Comfortably Numb must be the song from my childhood, that I still listen at least 3-4 times each week, while SOS, is second with 1-2.  I had a hard time voting for the last ones (90ies and 00nds), since I don't like either choice. Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chilly peppers are OK, but two songs each! Spare me, there are so many other artists...and I always wonder why Clapton's Cocaine gets so many votes over Walk this way. After all it is just a good cover.

Just received the invitation! 4 hours late! I went through the site and built my ideal guitar. It will cost me 1800$! Saved it for later...
Maybe an MK signature is not a bad idea after all. Roughly the same price. Can I have both?  Given that I will find time to play... My guitars look me very sadly from the corner. Its been 3 weeks since I last touched them...

Another tough one! With SRV. But the toughest will be with Layla on the next round! If it passes from there, I guess it will be relatively easy to win, with only exception the Hendrix entry"Little wing" that seems to be the most serious contender (and probable winner).
However it is Clapton that  has three songs in the list, Layla, Cocaine (competing each other now) and Bad love.

Although I adore the Layla song (and the whole album) I wouldn't quote it as a typical "strat-ish" song

until today, I am still not sure if the main theme is played by Eric on strat or by Duane on Les Paul.

It's Duane who "composed" this theme by "accelerating" the first theme from the blues song "as the years go passing by", so he could be him playing it on the studio version.

This album was mixed in few days, in a "live" way, so I bet that all songs are mixed the same way, that means Duane mainly on the left, and Eric on the right. It's obvious on when you're down and out or key to the highway, but my guess is that it's the case on the whole album (except the first 3 songs where Duane doesn't play)

There was some guitar overdubb on Layla with at least three guitars on it.
The freaky riff is Duane.
Tom Down explained in an interview that the album run 5% faster than original recording speed
Eric said that singing under drug effects is generally not a good thing but for the Layla song it helped him to sing it better.

The freaky riff is Duane.

"some guitar overdubb" is an euphemism :

I had a magazine (guitar part I guess) explaining all guitar parts on this song, and I remember it said that Layla was a "guitar concerto" with "6 guitars", only for the 1st part (rock song) :

from memory I immediately think of 5 :

1st part (rock song) :
- the first riff is doubbled : 2 guitars
- then you have another rhythm guitar
- then the lead one. is it what you mean by "The freaky riff" ?
- at the end (of the 1st part) : slide lead

then, 2nd part (balad)
- acoustic
- leslie
- 2 slide leads

the whole album is full of overdubb (all song have at least 3 guitars), but in the same time has a "live" feeling

Post by: ds1984 on March 27, 2014, 07:23:20 PM
By freaky riff I mean found by Duane. I am quite unable to determine who play what on this one.

For the live feeling the band was jamming quite a lot so overdubb were pobably just "add on" over already strong basic live tracks.

"Key To The Highway" fade in in due to the band jamming on it and the tech did not start the recorder on time.

There were lots of recordings. I have a double LP with more jamming from the sessions, unfortunately they are good only for the curious fan.

Jarle you have to register every time AFTER voting! So SOS was winning despite your missing vote, but now it is the tough spot. Layla is a legend as much as SOS, or more since Clapton was playing and the story of Patti Boyd haunts it. On the other hand (and this is only my opinion) Layla has always been one of the songs I skipped when playing the D&D album. Maybe because I had listened to it many times before on various compilations, maybe because I find at least 5 other songs in the album far superior, maybe because I was lead to it by other people and didn't find it myself. Little wing, if SoS goes that far, is going to be the hard one. The perfect song. Strangely Clapton covered it with the D&D, but I always prefer the original. Elliptical, short and almost mystical.

Hold on! Now I spotted it. The winner amongst SoS and Layla is not competing with Little wing, but with Scar tissue!

Layla and the "brownie" Strat has a much higher profile in musical history than SOS I'm afraid.

We're talking about a song Eric wrote as a plea to his muse, a Beatles wife! With one of the catchiest riffs ever, plus the guitar is on the album cover!

Luckily we all know these competitions are ridiculous right? It's cool enough that many Fender freaks know about Sultans, but it's no surprise there's an uphill battle if the artist himself doesn't care ;)

well, Brownie is "only" on the back cover, while the red strat was the logo of the Band for dire straits !  ;D

and I am quite sure that the famous Layla riff/theme is played by Duane, so on a LP, not on Brownie !  :o

SOS would probably have gotten third place if there was still a battle for the rest, which is not bad at all. (or fifth, but scar tissue above, really?)
Clapton is in the semi finals with two songs! Unbelievable! Can only speculate about results. Little wing is surely far superior as a song and with a guitar legend that is considered by many the most inventive player ever, but Layla is equally if not more well known, and the artist is alive and playing  still. And someone wrote on the wall that he is a God...
So I would go for Hendrix, but it will be a tough battle.

By the way, the most perfect Fender song in my opinion is Cause we've ended as lovers by Jeff Beck, which wasn't in the poll. It is the best instrumental fender guitar music ever, for me.  And against it, I would probably have voted for SOS only if they met at the finals, for sentimental reasons. .
