Kndom of gold was played in the soundcheck. We where visiting the Hall and heared it
-
great outr solo, still a boring song.
-
I changed my mind about it during this tour and I think it is one of the best songs of this tour. Together with Seattle which I newly fell in love with last Tuesday(the song, not Ruth, although...). Seatte is such a beauty, lyrics, melody, mood. Really one of Mark's greatest...
On the album, Kingdom of Gold is boring, I agree. Same for Yon Two Crows, can't get used to the album version, but like the few live versions we have.

I love that Loreena McKennitt kind of Celtic song, it grabbed me from the beginning, and live, it became even better because of the outro solo, you're absolutely right about that.

Yes, KOG and YTC are much better played live. More guitar based.
The same for Border Reiver and Piper To The End :)

completely agree

Another thing is all that flute.........It's fantastic in songs like Marbletown and Paraguay :)
But I'm not happy for it in songs like What It Is and Why Aye Man :(

LE, I'm with you on this. 'Kingdom of gold' and also 'yon two crows' are very bland on the album and I think lack the guitar at the end which is so good Live. I would gladly love to hear them again. I dont find anything of MK 'Boring' as the songs/lyrics & music are far too powerful I think that MK playing them Live brings them to life!! Anyway this is my last post for a week as we are off ot our holiday home!!
Good to have met you LE and will email some photo's to you on my return...

Actually prefer PFP without the flutes and liked it with just the 'Strat' sound but then I would wouldn't I!!!

What it is
Corned beef city
-
I like KOG and YTC both on album, and live
I love the dramatic background vocals on the KOG studio version
the lack of guitar in a song is not neccesarily a bad point IMHO
for example I like more fish and the bird (which doesn't have much guitar) then Do america (which have riff + solos + lap steel)

Privateering
Father and son
Hill farmers blues

Fantastic show!!!! Was standing so close in the end!
Who was the French amit fan who talked to me outside? Pm me :wave
-
Sfa, shangri la and going home. No surprises.
Well, three encores instead of the two we had earlier in the tour. Usually the concerts become shorter! :o
-
I'm surprised that Gator Blood is not played, it sounded pretty good earlier. Perhapts it'll be back when they don't do the extra Ruth songs.
-
Another excellent show. Having previously attended Monday's this was the same setlist with SFA added to the encores. It was a shame not to hear any other songs although I really like this set list and was very happy Sultans was played if only for the atmosphere in the Hall - a loooong standing ovation for this one. Mark was quite chatty once again and encouraged people to shout out requests, although he obviously was not going to play them ! I do wonder about some of the fans though, the oldish couple next to me weren't there for Ruth and then the woman fell asleep (through Speedway!) and you could hear her snoring during the quieter parts! Running of the bulls started slightly early and from my position in F6 on the right (the row with no seats in front as its near the arena entrance) I was jostled by people who I am sure had run the length of the arena, the speed they were going. However a front of stage position was obtained right in front of Richard and rewarded with a handshake from MK after the encores ;D.
Sad that it's now over until the next tour for me but memories of two great nights !
-
Thx! That's it... Next tour I'm traveling to London to see Mark live in the Royal Albert Hall :P. Would be really cool I think! :)
-
had amazing time at this gig definatley my favorite of the tour so far, an the atmopshere was so good too, maybe he's guitar were a smidege too loud and jims piano but was superb:)), now gota wait to the end of july for next one now!!
-
I was at this show together with Jarle!
MINDBLOWING show!!!! He was excellent!! The sound was fantastic and MK was in superb form!
I was totally blown away!! The best MK concert I have ever been to!
Still buzzling!!! 8)

I'm home now after a nice weekend in London !
Only 1h30 with the Eurostar train from Lille.
My wife and I arrived friday evening at St Pancras and took the tube to High Street Kensington and then put our luggage at the Copthorne Tara Hotel.
A little walk around, a little big beer at a tavern (a pint is the normal quantity in the UK whereas in France, it's a half pint !) and then return to the hotel.
On saturday, we spent the day walking in London (Notting Hill, Portobello Road, Hyde Park, Oxford Street, New Bond Street, Regent Street, Picadilly Circus, The Mall, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey, London Eye...) A 15 km walk until we arrived at the RAH. We thought we could eat some fish & chips around but around the RAH, there's nothing that looks like a restaurant or a pub ! So we went to the RAH bar and ate an overpriced sandwich...
The show was fantastic with Ruth Moody as the opening part.
MK was in a real good mood and his guitar skills were present for the gig !
Speedway and TR were the highlights and my wife loved R&J, her favourite MK song
Ruth Moody had a very small role as her voice was really so low. They could have sung a duet like This is us or If this is goodbye.
The same opinion concerning Nigel Hitchcock, underused, but a really nice addition in R&J and I used to could.
When the show ended and we saw the Range Rovers and we decided to wait for MK and the band. We only saw Ian Thomas !
Dutchessy, I'm the amit member who talked to you!
I also met Elian , aka Poupystar ! He told me Mark went out of the RAH by another door ... but he saw John Illsley !
We took the bus to our hotel and had a good night !
Sunday, we went to Shaftsbury Avenue, Chinatown, Soho, Buckingham Palace (but there was a big crowd due to the Queen Jubilee)...
We managed to eat our Fish & chips and it was time to go away!
It was a very good weeknd.
Next show : Paris !
-
Thanks for that El Macho. Good that you had a nice time in London. I always seem to be in such a rush every time I go as I only ever go to see MK concerts! This time, the only full day for me (not travelling day) was the 28th and it was heavy rain all day! As long as you managed to find some good fish and chips though and enjoyed the show! :thumbsup

Back at work today :( Just eating my lunch and remembering what an absolutely fantastic weekend we had. Capped by probably the best MK concert i can ever remember in,without doubt, the best venue by a country mile i've ever been in. i heard all the stories from different people, including Guy Fletcher, about how good it is to play the Albert Hall. Now i can confirm with my own eyes and ears how true that is. So glad i did. So many highlights but the thing that stood out the most was just how much Mark and all the band were enjoying themselves on stage. Like a bunch of mates having a good time who also just all happened to be brilliant musicians in there own right. If i had to pick out a single highlight {and trust me that's pretty difficult as the whole concert was one massive highlight} i'd have to say it was Sultans. Far and away the best i've seen and heard it played in a long looooooonnnnngg time. The solos were outstanding and played the way he always used to play them....quickly and long. ;D ;D ;D :thumbsup. I'm not normally prone to bouts of religion but i pray someone somewhere had it recorded to share with everyone how good it was.
The addition of Nigel Hitchcock on sax on R&J and Going Home in particular was a welcome bonus as well. But the outstanding quality musicianship of every single member of the band made it a musical experience i'll never forget. :) :)
-
Hey Old Pigweed, glad you had another great time with MK and band. Whats this about someone falling asleep during Speedway?? Ruddy cheek!! Obviously there just to make the numbers up!! Anyway just had to say Hi and will nowa just slip back into the pool
-
A few comments from someone less smitten:
1) On the louder songs, MK's vocals were a bit low in the mix, I thought, and were not clear. On the quieter songs, they were perfect.
2) There were clearly more non-Brits at these weekend shows. On the 1 June, the "London town" reference in "Sultans" got barely any response, whereas, earlier in the week, it got a great roar.
3) Similarly, there was continental-style cheering after one song (again, not heard earlier in the week).
4) And, while I'm on the topic, the "bull run" was much less "gentlemanly" on the Friday and the Saturday at the RAH. Friday, we got a "BFS" trampling over me and my bags ("BFS" = Big Fat Slob). Saturday, two women [separately !!!] commented about how badly they were treated by the male fans down the front - and both said that the males concerned seemed to come from southern Europe, probably Italy. I should add that I met quite a few people during the tour, from all over the place including Europe, and found them to be pleasant, courteous and, aware that their great feeling for MK's music was not universally accepted, showing not only great camaraderie amongst themselves but also understanding for those who were just tagging along.
5) Further to a previous posting, Nigel Hitchcock did start to "step out" a bit in the later shows and I was pleased to hear it. There is scope there for a really honking solo or two [if he's at later shows - I have no idea but you guys will know]
6) The musicianship on "Marbletown" is just stunning - John McCusker is amazingly good.
7) For me, "Postcards from Paraguay" has really come into its own. Liked it every night - great rhythm, liked the way the instruments came in one-by-one [more or less] and the wry humour in the song came across.
8 ) Is it my imagination or are the set lists, after all the variety at the start of the tour, beginning to get into a bit of a rut again? If so, I hope this week's break will cause a bit of a re-think (and a bit of re-jigging)
9) Did I miss something but I didn't notice a charity for the final RAH show? If so, why not? There are a lot of deserving charities around? The young Teenage Cancer Trust guy was a terrific advert for that charity. By way of contrast, the "elephant" guy earlier in the week didn't really make out his case at all, in my view.
10) "R&J" was great; "Speedway" was improved by its relative brevity these days (too much "sound and fury" and to too little effect before); "Telegraph Road" is saved by an interesting "plot" in its lyrics and some memorable lines.
11) Yes, I did enjoy the shows, even though they can be somewhat "same-y" over several nights but, then, I'm a bit of a sucker for the Celtic/folkie/Americana influences and strands and much prefer that sound and "feel" to the "DS-onslaught" approach. [Sorry, folks, I know you disagree but I call it as I find it]
12) And we are now trying now to fit in an extra show towards the end of the tour.
-

Cheers KF.
She nodded off during Marbletown, initially I thought she had just closed her eyes to listen but it became apparent she was asleep. When she start to snore I felt like giving her a slap and telling her to wake up or get out! She must have bought fan club tickets though to be sitting so close.
Went with a mate this time as Mrs OP initially said she only wanted to go to one show - a decision she really regretted after Monday and the new Pigweeds are sadly into One Direction and Taylor Swift.
Anyway it was his first MK concert and thought it was great.

Nice one - thanks! A very confident behaving Mark I think (trying to read body language as a complete amateur). :think
-
Oh, I forgot something. At several of the shows (possibly, all of the shows) that we attended, Mark mentioned getting "bequests" (sic) from the audience. The first time I heard it, I thought it was a simple slip of the tongue and that he'd just carried on in the hope that nobody in the audience had spotted it. Then it was repeated at other shows.
Has it got so that nobody in the touring party dare point out the mistake? Will it be kept on the USB sound-stick recordings or will they massage the recording to correct things?
[Facetiously, I wondered if we were watching a hi-tech hologram that really was seeking "bequests"]
-
4) And, while I'm on the topic, the "bull run" was much less "gentlemanly" on the Friday and the Saturday at the RAH. Friday, we got a "BFS" trampling over me and my bags ("BFS" = Big Fat Slob). I did notice some serious rowdy behaviour too, I simply don't get it. It is not only very rude but also dangerous as well, as I did see some elderly people and children at the front nearly being run over by some bulls. I'd imagine if this would continue the run of the bulls will be forbidden in the future. And that would be very sad.
Anyway, the London shows are always magnificent, but this time really topped it all by a mile. I really do like Danny, but I got the impression that Ianto adds a lot of energy to the band, which is obviously a good thing. The band were firing on all cylinders, MK was relaxed, chatty and his playing in another league, compared to previous tours. The thing that worries me a bit were his shaking hands towards the end of the show, e.g. when he put his in-ears back. Did anyone spot that too?
-
Do I have to mention that the runs of the bull tend to spoil some part of the show. I have loved to do it because the "reward" to be front of stage with Mark on dead center at the RAH has been somewhat priceless. But to do it properly, being ready is just demanding. And during that moment my mind was no more 100 % focused on the music, being nervous during the entire TR solo, feeling my legs become like cotton and wondering if they will be able to make it. Watching closely on sides to see if others "competitors" are ready or not, somes eyes contact tells you that they are. Then the moment to jump with the adrelanin shot that goes with it. Of course doing it from first row is simpler and safer than coming from the back of the hall. And accept that when somebody is already on the place that there are no need to push - that it is over.
-

[/quote]
I noticed his hands too at Glasgow during R&J final solo, but I also noticed and felt the passion coming from the stage and it is one of the most beautiful versions from the tour so far IMO. Perhaps this has always been the case anyway. :-\
-
He is wearing a black brace on his wrist, but maybe after a part of the show it's getting to hurt anyway. Could cause some shaking because he goes on anyway.
-
Yes, that could be right. And when you press on, you get a bit shaky.
-
Yes I could clearly see his hand shaking when he had the first chat right before Privateering on the first RAH night. I thought that he indeed might be nervous still to talk to an audience...
LE
-
Have not noticed. Did the hands shake when playing or only during breaks?
-
Oh it was only one little "shake" when he made a little speech. Not too much to think about, won't work it up here. Maybe it was cold at the Hall! ;D
LE
-
Or because of music critics of first rows :)

Wasn't aware of any "critics" at the first evening... All I saw was Fanboys... and Girls... :D

There is for sure a big cheer by 'way on down south, london town!' in contrary with the post of TWM. I was just 3 rows behind the filmer.
Just an awsome version! Again goosebumps! :clap :clap

Here is another Going Home.
Very poor angle but I couldn't resist to tape the encores. ;)

-
Maybe, dutchessy, there was a "London town" cheer close to the video-filmer but not in the hall generally. When I was contrasting the audience reaction to this line at the concert earlier in the week with this 1st June show, I was referring to what I could hear coming from the audience in the RAH as a whole. For the earlier show, I was in about Row 7 of the arena area, on the left, and could hear the "London town" cheers coming from various parts of the venue. For the 1st June show, we had our worst seats (in the middle, more or less, of Row 19 in the arena) and I could not hear much of any reaction anywhere to that line. Of course, as I think I also said, I found Mark's vocals less clear than I would have liked during the louder songs, so maybe others elsewhere in the hall were similarly afflicted.
You will doubtless be aware of how, on some concert recordings, voices can be heard talking during songs or shouting out requests. They may spoil the recording but rarely spoil the listening of most of the audience. Perhaps that is what happened on this occasion. A cheer that sounds loud on a recording may be very localised in terms of its audibility in the hall as a whole.
-
This is the end of Going Home filmed by my girlfriend some space behind me. You can see me clearly from 1.20 to the end making my own Going Home-video (which I already posted before in this topic)
The interaction between MK and the audience is priceless in this video. It's well worth watching from 30sec when the camera (mobile phone) is tilted up high.

I read at some YouTube comments from this night that someone thought about Sultans that it was a decision made on stage to play it because of audience request and that it was not on the set list. That person has some other strong opinions on everything so it just might be an (odd) idea, but maybe some forumer (people that I trust more on these occasions ;D ) can shed a light on this matter? Was Sultans intended to be played or did it look like a spontaneous set list change?

I very much doubt it was spontaneous. :disbelief Not MK personality to do so. Just my opinion.

Birmingham 15.07.98 and MK decided to play Wild Theme because a lady kept shouting out for it. To be fair though, I my vast MK experience this is the one and only time I can recall! ;)

even back in the early eighties he did not perform "bequests"
remember the legendary "Skateaway" request.

Thinking of Skateway, it is a shame that such a great tune was played only for one tour.
I spare a thought in memory of all those great songs that Mark played only for one tour then dropped, whereas they would have deserved better:
Skateaway, Love over Gold, Ride Accross the River, The man's too strong, On Every Street, Planet of New Orleans, Iron Hand, You and Your Friend, Golden Heart, Imelda, Junkie Doll, Pyroman, Boom Like That, Border Reiver, Coyote...

You werent probably there but in STP Tour 2001 1st show in Amsterdam MK played WT upon our request cos we kept shouting for it. Since that night he finished every evening with it...

Somebody I know mentioned that in one of the shows in the US that he attended , Mark started playing a bunch of DS songs because fans shouted out requests. I sort of doubted his story though. ??? ???

Amsterdam 17/06/2001 was indeed the first 2001 gig with Wild theme.
It's even mentionned on the silver presse bootleg "going to Amsterdam 2001" :
http://www.cdandlp.com/item/2/0-1101-0-1-0/114977199/mark-knopfler-dire-straits-going-to-amsterdam-2001.html (http://www.cdandlp.com/item/2/0-1101-0-1-0/114977199/mark-knopfler-dire-straits-going-to-amsterdam-2001.html)
I have to listen to it again to check if we can hear request from the audience, but I don't remember such a thing.
I remember though that when I saw him on the 27/06/2001, I knew the setlists before (greatest error in my life), but I was wondering f if he would play wild theme or not, because I think fans were not sure if it was really "fixed" or not, even after Amsterdam, so it was a little "surprise".
-
It is starting to ring a bell, but I am really not sure if it was played because we shouted for it or he just planned it as a probably closer

I would guess for the later, because as said before, I don't see Mark playing request (except for dmg's exception ;))

I was there but can't remember it ????
Something wrong with my memory I think
Even I remember that!
He probably has only ever taken the request of WT because it is only Guy and himself. He would never want to drop his band in it, so to speak, with an unrehearsed song.

I just listen to Amsterdan 2001 again, and I can't say if the crowd influenced Mark's decision or not.
the recording is an audience recording.
After SFA, you can hear the crowd singing "oe oe" and then someting like "we want more" or "we won't go" (can't hear distinctly) :hmm
but it's not very different from others gigs...
then, it's not very long until Mark comes back, so was it planned or not ? difficult to say :think
An then Wild theme is played.
at the beginning of the tune, you can hear a very loud "WE LOVE YOU" shouted. Is it someone form AMIT ? :wave
and just after, the crowd is loughing, maybe after Mark's attitude ? :think
great version. Mark went back to the strat, after some years playing this song on Les Paul : Montserrat 1997, 2000 STP promo tour, (and going home was aslo played on LP in 96).
so this wild theme amsterdam version, played on the 61 strat, is really special : something like coming back to origins !

So I attended the RAH show June 1st. What still really stands out for me is that MK must have played the most flawless rendition of SOS I have heard in a LONG time. Wow. Other than that, great show. Nice to have heard Going Home with full band and sax (just wish he'd play it with the Les Paul instead of the Strat/Schecter but you can't have everything can you), and Dug Up A Diamond. Ruth Moody was lovely. Having been back at the RAH was awesome too, as was meeting some old friends... Looking forward to Frankfurt and Bad Mergentheim now. Really, REALLY want to hear Yon Two Crows. He can drop anything else instead, I don't care!! ;D

For Going Home it would be his 2003 Fender Strat. :)
Glad you enjoyed it.

Sigh... Things aren't what they used to be; get back to your original red Strat Mark!
