-
Two members on this forum are also going. let's hope they put on the setlist asap........... :wave
-
Maybe erase the current 'setlist'? ;) :think
-
Perhaps it is nice to put on the last setlist of the GL tour so we can see how many songs are new :-\
-
oh well, here it is. The last concert of the GL tour.
Border Reiver /What It Is/Sailing To Philadelphia/Coyote/Hill Farmer`s Blues/Romeo And Juliet/Sultans of Swing/Done With Bonaparte/Marbletown/Speedway At Nazareth/Telegraph Road/Brothers In Arms/So Far Away/Piper To The End.
-
If all goes well I will be informed about the setlist tonight, as soon as I know something I will post it here :D
-
That would be great Ingrid!
-
Keep the setlist flowing!!! ;D Im so excited!!
-
Will it be real time ingrid or do we have to wait a little bit longer...... :clap
-
Thank you ingrid!!! I'll post Istanbul gig's setlist. And some photos, maybe videos...
-
Fantastic start!! ROCKING!! 8)
-
It's so cool to know that they are playing at this very minute. 8) I can't wait to see the set list! Thank goodness it will be a full set instead of sharing their time with Mr. Bob. :)
-
1. What It Is
2. Corned Beef City
3. Privateering
4. Father and Son(Cal) surprise :D
5. Hillfarmers Blues
6. Yon Two Crows
Father and Son! That is a surprise. I'm happy about HFB and YTC. I hope they do KOG. He had some very cool solos in that one.
-
:D
-
Wonder what's next... :think ;)
-
Wonder what's next... :think ;)
I was just saying the same...
-
Isn't he going through the songs too quickly??? :hmm I am not timing the updates from Ingrid/Man on a Track, but it does seem like an abbreviated (album) version of the songs.. :'(
...Seem to be taking their time with Sultans... :clap
-
This is just great! Following the setlist 'live'!
Let's hope some nice pics are being made
-
So far, looking good! Let's hope another encore than So far away...
-
Wonder what's next... :think ;)
I was just saying the same...
I feel like something new and unexpected is coming .... :think
-
It looks good but too familiar for now ???
-
So next has to be Marbletown :D
-
This setlist is fantastic!!! In my opinion!!
Dont complain folks!! :D
-
No!!! Not Sonny Liston again. :disbelief No surprises then, except Father and Son and that's just soundtrack. Wonder if it's used as intro to HFB like it was to Golden Heart. :think
Maybe surprises are kept for later on. Fingers (and toes) crossed.
-
Good but really hope for something Ive never heard live, or at least not for a long time.
-
Marbletown :smack
Well, Val's happy!
So far it's the Dylan set with R&J and Sultans isn't it?
-
I hate Marbletown enough Mark enough >:(
-
Marbletown :smack
Well, Val's happy!
unlucky DMG
-
Marbletown :smack
Well, Val's happy!
Marbletown's fine, but so far not a very inspired setlist - let's hope for something a bit more surprising before the end! ;)
-
Bonaparte? Or maybe they will change between Bonaparte and Sonny.
-
Im sad! all the same songs! maybe played diferent lets wait
-
Something new/exciting, please! :wave
-
if he hadnt toured with Dylan, the setlist would be great.
-
Up until now 6 songs from the new album.....
-
i mean 5 :smack
-
The wife and I are still looking forward to seeing Mark and band whatever gets played!! But agree Father and son will be nice along with perhaps some nice surprises towards the end... Early days yet...
-
if he hadnt toured with Dylan, the setlist would be great.
That's very true. The first half (until Sonny Liston) is really really strong. But it's up to the encores to take it to the next step.
-
With all we know so far i'm guessing the next ones.
Speedway
TR
Brothers
SFA
.........
-
I hate Marbletown enough Mark enough >:(
Agreed...
-
Ahhhhhhh yeeeeeeeeeeesssssss !!!
TR is there !!! My dear TR !
Oh please tell us about it ! How is it ? Pacy or karaoke mode ? Please !

You are right. besides the ones from the new album and Father and Son always the same songs!!!!!!!

DULL.
Say whatever... For me a MK concert without TR, SAN, SOS, HFB, WII, MT,BIA would lack a lot !
Agree with you about SFSL though - this one is unbearable.
-
we really need to lower our expectations. Tour after tour the same core songs.
Indeed!!
-
Wonder why they rehearse 2 weels :think
-
13. Speedway at Nazareth
14. Telegraph Road
and SOS ennough to make me happy!!!!
-
Looking good but of course could be better for fans. 5 songs from new album is good.
-
Perhaps saturday a new setlist....... :-\
-
Still need to see TOL, Go Love, Silvertown and So Far From the Clyde...
-
Give us ONE more surprise! Please!
-
SFA and Piper next?
The surprise would be if he doesn't play SFA!
-
Still need to see TOL, Go Love, Silvertown and So Far From the Clyde...
TOL... Oh Mark, why did you treat one of your greatest songs which such contempt ??
-
Looking good but of course could be better for fans. 5 songs from new album is good.
5 songs from the new album is great plus Sultans, Romeo, TR and Brothers.
Father and son is also nice but the rest.........oh well we might get Lucky....................
-
Still need to see TOL, Go Love, Silvertown and So Far From the Clyde...
Sorry, Lis, perhaps in a parallel universe...
-
Maybe the setlist will be different when Nigel joins and, of course Ruth Moody perhaps for some harmonies! :think
-

Hmm..I hope for bigger changes in the setlist from time to time this tour..but unfortunately we usually only see the minor changes from show to show, dont expect this setlist to change drastically, not in the UK either. Nigel will probably add another "dimension" to songs from the new album..you can always hope for him to join in on f.ex R&J, but doubt that too..
-
Glad I'm only going to one concert now.
-
After so many years he is still playing the same old DS songs
I can live with R&J and Sultans. but why not someting else for a change.
Like TOL for TR and Setting me up for SFA. It is not that big of a change..... but for Mark it is...........
-
Thanks to my dear friend Man on a Track:

What can i say. The forum was out for 20 min........
-
speedway and TR, that is a good combination! but i agreee, not much news....hope to get my stick soon :-)
-
if this setlist is confirmed in the next shows,
imo it's a total disaster, almost offensive to real fans going to all tours
not even both Yon Two Crows and Kingdom of Gold in a full show
zero real surprises
incredible at best

You're right - this is actually offensive. MK knows he has a loyal fan base who have stuck with him from the dizzy heights of the DS days and yet he continues to play the same set tour after tour. Then the new songs he does play are the rubbish, easy ones played exactly like they are on the album. I feel sorry for people going to loads of shows now.
One more thing: the show seemed shorter. Only two encores!
And another: didn't Guy or Richard say there was surprises?
More angry than disappointed.
-
yes, it will be interesting to hear if there are any new arrangements
-
Hmm..this was dissapointing in many ways.. I had hoped for some real surprises in the set this time after both Richard and Guy have hinted towards this..if Father and Son is this major surprise this tour..well well.. :disbelief
-
Hi all, I already wrote a message to Guy, telling we are disappointed. That what we heard from him and Richard was surprises, new songs and all. And we got ... nothing. Put it on the forum, but will send him a mail tomorrow that he 'doesn't have to put it in the forum but I hope he will communicate. Don't have his e-mail-address in my ipad or iphone. But have it at the office.
Another problem appeared as well, site couldn't be reached all the time. I hope to reach our technical genius tonight to solve it.
Be patient with us. It's all volunteerjob and paid by only a couple of people. I am not technical at all. So I can't say if it's because we have a small account or it was really too much people.
See you
-
Songs like Father and Son, IUTC, HA, Sonny, Marble and even BIA these days I have zero interest in. BIA's best days are well behind it. Great song but time to put it to bed.
-
thanks for updates ingridswing.
-
I guess we just have to wait now until a couple of shows in to see if there will be changes and which ones who will be played throughout..but again, how often the recent years have we seen changes in the setlist...
-
thanks for updates ingridswing.
+1 :clap
and, of course MOAT.
Usually the first show has the most exciting and long set! Oh dear. :(
-
Seems a nice set though... Ok, no bonaparte, that's a pity! :lol Few songs of the new album, some good ol' stuff (marbletown, hill farmer, WII) with a few nice new ones (YTC, assume this is as awesome as it used to be last year) and a nice intro: Father & Son (love that one). Oh btw, Going Home is played uptempo / full arrangement with sax, isn't it?

I am sure he will make changes, especially in the first couple of weeks. Its just for what that bothers me. I bet STP rears its overplayed head for starters.

No sax at the moment, UK only you know. Don't have info on the arrangements, moat was kind enough to update me realtime, but no discussions about the arrangements. We will know more in a short time

Greetings to all!
I've been watching this forum for a while now (with pauses to be honest ;D) and I've just decided to make an account and tell you I attended this opening show as I live in Bucharest :thumbsup Thank you for that, Mr Knopfler, sir! :clap
I can confirm the full setlist except the first song (Feeling Good), don't know what's with that one, definitely not in the show.
PS: This is my second Mark concert; first time I caught him in Glasgow (his city of birth iirc :)) along with His Bobness on Oct 8th, 2011. I'm happy I'll also be attending a show at the RAH on May 31st 8)
Cheers!

What do you mean? First song What It Is I was told, wasn't it. Can't imagine MOAT being wrong

6. Yon Two Crows new song ;D

dont understand dwhy people are moaning,
im over the moon with the set and so pleased with sonny liston and marbletown still in the set list, so excitied about getting my mp3 stick through the post, my only gripe romeo and juilet is still there, but know other people dont like it (he could of put gator blood in instead of that, so glad SFA has gone too another one im not fussed about,
so looking forward to seeing him at newcastle, liverpool, cardiff brimgham, RAH 1st june and malaga at the end of the tour just so buzzing,

Check out page 1, he is referring to feeling good as it stands as part of the set there (intro)..aka walk-on-tune, not part of the set..so MOAT is absolutely right :)
-
Shangri-La wrote something like Feeling Good on page one here.
That's no information from me and I have no idea what he's referring to.
Show startet with What it is... :)
-
Why do they rehearse for 2 weeks ???

Obviously this is a matter of taste and is highly individual, but in general I think the disappointment here is related to the fact that Richard and Guy to some extent has "hyped" things up a bit beforehand by talking about several new tunes, surprises etc etc, and that after numerous repetitive setlist in concerts over the years many had hopes for something new and unexpected this time..
-
I wrote that. Was in the info I got. Maybe misinterpreted it.
-
Thank you soo much Ingrid and MOAT!!!!! I really appreciate the up-to-the minute setlist!! :wave
-
We all have our favourites, but I think what some of us are a bit upset about is the fact that the set is too similar to previous tours. No songs that haven't been played before, the new ones were all done with Bob last year and most were uninspiring and played the same as album (par one).
As for SFA, I would like it played now if it would mean a longer concert because he's dropped it for...nothing!
-
Is it a conicidence the amit logo has gone back to the Get Lucky one.
-
I never have had any doubt about your report dear moat ;)
Setlist is post #76 of this thread, live reported from Bukarest thanks to moat
And why we are disappointed is that it's the 2010 and 2011 setlist mixed with only one surprising extra
-
Let us wait for the next setlist this saturday...... :-\
-
Is it a conicidence the amit logo has gone back to the Get Lucky one.
I think the problem is the provider of the forum. I think he is updating to previous things. As far as I know no editor is busy with the forum at the moment
Hopefully it will be back to normal tomorrow
-
Let us wait for the next setlist this saturday...... :-\
I'll bet the only change will be KOG for Crows.
-
thanks Moat ang Ingrid :thumbsup
One of the less surprising setlists ever. He brought back the usual suspects.
For most songs its really a can't stand it anymore or cant get enough situation
Good news Marb HFB and TR :thumbsup
Terrible news : Sonny RJ GH :thumbsdown
Too many missing songs : C, BR, KOG, RT ???
Of course RT or KOG may see the light sooner or later but for sure they don't seem to be a priority.
I hope YTC will be played in a regular basis and not be considered as a turn over with KOG

I thought it might be some sort of protest about the set list. ;D
-
OK, another opinion on the setlist... I have only seen Mark in last year's NA tour, so I am VERY excited to see Sultans, R&J, Speedway and Telegraph Road - for my first time (sorry old-timers!!:(.
And while I am thrilled to be able to attend the Privateering concert, every Privateering song that was played in Bucharest was already on his setlist in NA (I was hoping for some NEW songs like Go, Love, Bluebird, Got to Have Something and Follow the Ribbon).
...Ever so hopeful, I imagine that MK will trade out several songs, (in NA, he replaced 5 of his 12 songs on the second night), and he added/rotated additional songs up to the 8th and 12th nights into his tour. Soooo, maybe I will stil get my TOL and MK solo favorites :D
-
I wish he played Done with Bonaparte / A Night in Summer Long Ago (I caught these two in his show with Bob), Walk of Life, Border Reiver, Monteleone, Piper To The End, Get Lucky...
Some songs I absolutely love but I guess will never get played (anymore): Tunnel of Love (he stopped playing this a long time ago :(), Irish Boy, Cannibals, The Last Laugh, Punish the Monkey (does anyone think this one is amazing?) and these slow gems: In The Sky, A Place Where We Used To Live, Go Love, Radio City Serenade...
-
Thank you very much for the setlist!!!!!
Myfriends that complaining about the setlist can give me their tickets to RAH ... :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol
-
I guess that since he rarely plays in these part of the world and fans rarely see him there, he was bound to play this sort of mix of the new and old numbers, in order to please them. And the Father and son thrown in for the USB audience. I think that the setlist will change considerably, (at least I hope so) once he reaches Italy or Germany. And we will probably have at least one new song every couple of shows. We can't seriously expect 6 RAH identical concerts!
-

My 2 cents:
I am a bit puzzled and sad by the harshness of some of the comments. Ingrid, many, many thanks for posting the setlist in real time, this is very much appreciated, but why on earth do you want to write to Guy about disappointment ? He will not even be in his hotel room after the very first show of the tour, that he will have a message waiting already, from fans who did not even attend the show, to bash the tour right from start ?? Not very constructive IMHO.
Yes, this is not my #1 setlist; yes, I miss Border, Piper, and KOG in the same show as YTC. Yes, the hell with Sony Liston, can't understand what Mark finds great about this "song"... But "total disaster" ? "offensive"? we have not even heard the show yet, and we already use such radical words ??
Am I the only one to be glad that the milestones from my youth are still there ? to be joyful to still have the "usual suspects", which are gems to me: SOS, TR, BIA, SAN, MT, HFB, WII ?
Some of you speak as if everybody had heard or attended last year's US shows... come on ! we are just a smal bunch of geeks ! for the great majority of people who attended tonight's show, there were SIX NEW SONGS FROM THE NEW ALBUM ! not exactly what I would call a pale copy of the GL tour !!
So before I put ANY sort of judgment about tonight's show, I will wait until I hear it. Especially, I want to hear TR. I have high hopes: if Mark removed it from the Madrid show of the Super Deluxe Box, it was either to retire the song... or.... to improve it ! back to 2005 standards !
Com'on guys !! a little bit of optimism !
Cheers

We can see him alright. We won't hear him though! ;) What I mean is that I am OK with the setlist, just sad for not being around in 1985 to see him in his DS heyday. Or even better in 1978.

I have to mention SoS was the short version :(
Oh, how I miss the sax! And the lap-steel guitar! And those pipes! :'(

OMG! Thanks CArrionSpy!
We should thank Klaas !! He made me think searching youtube using Filters-> Upload Date-> Last hour...
Very good quality of the video and sound! Nice version of Marbletown 2nd part seems the band is in form and will get even better :)

Were you here ?? Can you tell us about TR ?? 2005-style or 2010-style ?? Thanks !
I'd say 2010 version.

Ouch...
Do you mean:
-No guitar solo after "rolling river" (what some called "karaoke mode") ?
-Rather slow pace for the final solo ?
-
It says "invalid youtube link" ???
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwy8YU7q8Eg
Thanks a lot ! Superb Marbletown, more elaborated than the 2010 version ! :) Love that song (sorry dmg :p)
Do you have other vids ? TR, for instance ? :)

Fran from Spain send to guy's forum :
"if this setlist is confirmed in the next shows, it's a total disaster, almost offensive to real fans. always the same? please 90% of the fans are very discouraged, you can read it in the forums, for the first time no unanimity. Thanks "
There is the response from Guy :
"Thanks for your encouragement, I'm glad you enjoyed the show. We have rehearsed 30+ songs and we aim to play them all. I'm not sure you came to this venue. Why are you posting here? I think your comments should be directed elsewhere. We have done one show, it was fabulous and as you will read tomorrow in my diary, the audience were incredible.... 90% my arse. Why on earth you would examine an internet posted set list and base your comments on THAT I have no idea. I always assumed fans came to enjoy a show. Call me old fashioned. ....long day and I'm off to bed.

[/quote]
Hopefully they rehearsed some other ones that we'll hear. After all, there are 70 concerts!

You see what i meant ?
Completely counter-productive to jump at Guy's jugular the night of the first show...claiming to represent 90% of fans... Sad. Please count me in the 10% for now.
Good news is, at least 14 other songs to be heard !!!
-
Ingrid Guy responded very fast to your email .... ;D

''We have rehearsed 30+ songs and we aim to play them all.''
that's pretty interesting unless he is talking about 10 different versions of Done with Bonaparte
LOL!!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My message to Guy:
Hi Guy, Very disappointed is what most people say after seeing and hearing (some people) the steilst. Only song 4 is surprising. After both you and Richard talking about new songs and stuff we expected more. You can see it on amarkintime.org/forum Hope a lot will change in the setlist. All the best Ingrid
His answer:
This disheartens me after an amazing first day Ingrid...Did you speak to anyone at the show? Did you go to the show? Patience dear. The set will reveal itself. GOD I didn't want to talk about the fucking set! aargh WHY would you even want to view the setlist on the net?
I will send him a private email tomorrow as announced earlier in this thread. To make a little more clear what I meant and to make clear that it's not only viewing setlists on internet. At least his answer isn't as sarcastic as the answer to Fran :-\
-
Ingrid,
No offense intended at all, but as for me I don't support your initiative.
I have often been irritated by Guy, but on that one I completely understand his reaction.
Cheers anyway

Firstly, I love the setlist. Moreover, even if they are the same songs, every time they evoke different emotions.
By the way, when I go to hear a concert of Mozart or Beethoven I don't expect changes in the setlist but if the music is well performed I still can appreciate it ;D

30 songs wow.Really pushed the boat out.
They played 16 tonight so that means only 14 different songs to be spread out over the rest of the tour. :)
Most of the tours have been like this, even in the DS days.
At a first glance this looks like a very lazy set-list however probably 80-90% of fans only go to one show and a good majority of those on the back of DS years so he plays some oldies and some stuff from the new album, thing is that he already played 4 of those new songs 2 years ago and there in no variety in the DS songs. The criticism is fair ,however the shows are always great whatever they are playing. Most of the shows are sold out or close to a sell out .
Go to the shows enjoy them and stop chasing what isn't out there.
I will follow the setlists so we can tick off the different songs ;D but i won't be listening/watching to any live footage until after the show I am going to at the RAH.
-
My 2 cents:
I am a bit puzzled and sad by the harshness of some of the comments.
I'm with you Herlock. I find the tone in this thread to be very discouraging. Perhaps it will be disheartening enough to Mark that he quits touring for good. Can't say I'd blame him. :'(

Oh no, That's what I fear. :'( Sooner or later Mark will stop touring, so why don't we all enjoy it while we can. :) There are a lot of us in NA who wish we could attend even one of the shows.
-
Cheers

MY GOD FOLKS!!
Why are you e-mailing Guy telling him that you are sad/angry/disappointed about last nights setlist? :o
Its a shame!!! Are you going to ruin everything?
It was the first night of 70!! shows!! The set-list will envolve as Guy answered!
Im in shock!! :disbelief

Enough videos all over YouTube. Almost the complete set list. Very like the sound of going home.
Just do a search for : mark Knopfler Bucharest if you want to see it.

Honestly, I feel the same about what I read this morning!
I almost feel sorry for having revealed the setlist by reading all this!!
For the record:
THE OPENING SHOW WAS GREAT!!!
Looking forward to some more :D ;)
-
Completely agree with Ingrid!
1st thought on setlist? Same old, same old.
Am I disappointed? Yes.
Will it stop me from seeing Mark in future?
HELL NO!!!!!!!! ;-)
It's just such a familiar pattern.
So much expectation on varied setlist, but
Same old suspects.
So much expectation on Live DVD, but
Who knows? I doubt it!
I'll watch how the tour develops, & I'm sure
When it's my turn @ RAH, I'll still be thrilled,
because whatever Mark & the band play, will
always be played to perfection.
Cheers BBB

Last night when I read the setlist, to be honest, I was disappointed that we didn't see some more surprises, but realistically I am sure it was the perfect set of songs for the fans in Romania, who probably don't have the opportunity of seeing him play live as often as those of us on this forum.
I am happy that most of my favourites are still there, esp TR and Marbletown, but really I just feel so lucky to be able to see and hear him still playing in front of me, because it won't last for ever! Enjoy Mark and the band whilst you can folks! :wave

My word guys - talk about jumping the gun! perhaps for those who don't play guitar or music might not know but if you haven't played 'Live' for a while you need to 'settle' in with some looseners if you know what I mean.
Give Mark a break as I just feel this tour is just gonna be something awesome.
I will say it again but if he plays that set at all my concerts we are going to I really couldnt care less because each night there will be a little variation and for me just to see and hear my Guitar Idol again will be tremendous....
I suppose I could go on and on about seeing Status quo each year because they basically don't change anything at all in their set!!
Lets all enjoy the legend that is Mark Knopfler while we can!!! ;)

Ingrid, I saw your latest message on Guy's forum and I just want to thank congrats and thank you for it - it made my day.

Cheers ! :)
The vids are fab, even though TR is again in "karaoke mode"... oh well....

Fantastic vids, but poor old T Road may need CPR shortly.

My respect for you, Ingrid ! Not everybody can apologize !
-
I read Guy's reply to you Ingrid and I must say I was shocked. You put your point across in a polite manner and all he could manage in reply was an expletive. He may have apologised, but what sort of person behaves like that in the first place? He's gone down in my estimations. I guess life's too short to hold a grudge so best to forgive and forget - move on.
On a more positive note, on listening to the videos I think Ian Thomas is settling in nicely, especially making his mark on R&J. Crows has evolved a bit too since last year and sounds much better now; Mark playing some licks during the lyrics thereby building up the song when it felt a bit flat last year until the final solo.
Can't wait until tomorrows set list then and we'll see just how much it will change...

I must say I'm disappointed with some of the comments on this thread. I think most of us just don't realise MK is playin' not for us, only a bunch of hard followers, but for the majority of a crowd who wants to hear classics from DS era and other uptempo songs. If it was just for us, MK would be playin' to venues of 50, 100 people at most. He plays for zillions of people who hardly know he's on solo career, but certainly know about his golden days of BiA, SoS, WoL, R&J, MfN. This is what they want to hear. This is what the tv ads are about. So I think the 90% of disappointed ones are, in fact, less than 5%. Most of people who go to the concerts are happy enoguh with five new songs, some other from his solo career and some DS highliths. I affirm that based on my own experience. Being from a land out of the main circuit, I was happy enough to hear him play this kind of setlist back in 2001 and I would be disappoited if the show were full of surprises and stripped down of DS songs. And I guess I also can point that, ok, we - get-a-lifers - can be disatisfied with the setlist, but we are not the primary target of the tour. This goes to the average fan, who follows MK from time to time, knows a little bit of his solo career but is really acquainted to him by his DS days.
-
we pay shitloads of money to go watch him and buy his cd's and sticks, and even though we all love him, even when he farts the telephone book live on stage, we are allowed to post our dissapointment, i see no issue with that.
-
and no i do not mean his shows are expensive, but it becomes a bit more expensive the more shows you visit.
-
I've been wondering what guys like the 96ers think of it all; playing the same old songs tour after tour. I mean, they can't really be getting anything out of it musically any more and must just be going through the motions by now. They are paid musicians so I guess they have to take the work, but I'll bet they pray for something new and challenging to get their teeth into. Or maybe they just go along for the 5 star hotels, private jets and cordon-bleu cuisine! ;D
-
Perhaps tomorrow something new ???
They have rehearsed more than 30 songs remember!!
-
Perhaps tomorrow something new ???

Doesn't mean they'll play them, or even intended to play them all. They may have been rehearsed just to achieve an appropriate set.

I also must say i would like songs like Silvertown, So far from the Clyde, 5.15 am and also some change in the DS songs would be nice but i'm guessing the setlist will change and other songs will be played.....

I'm just gonna say that judging by the videos I've been watching on youtube, Knopfler and band have been on fire.... So great seeing Knopfler with renewed energy... he's looking well and performing superbly. I'm really not into negativity as with the catalogue as extensive as Knopfler's it would be impossible to please everyone.
It's the first show and a few songs will get chopped and changed around no doubt.....
I for one am extremely pleased with this first concert.... Sultans and Telegraph Rd are being played with extra energy... Yon Two Crows and Hillfarmer's Blues are astonishingly good... BIA and R&J are beautiful and all the others sound superb
Anyone who things he can't play songs like Sultans anymore honestly need to go and get checked out :P
Long Live Knopfler...... Incredible

We use abbreviations like SFA sometimes because we name so many songs in one post that we would get sore fingers. Also, I'm lazy and slow at typing okay! ;)
FYI SFA is So Far Away, but I guess you know now! If anyone gets stuck, just ask and don't feel silly because we don't all use abbreviations all the time. I only know because I use them to save favourite versions on my computer.

Sure, I'd also like to see TOL, or GH or whatever in the setlist, but hey .......aren't we all LUCKY BASTARDS if we get to see Mark play life??
Don't complain i would say, just enjoy whatever he feels like playing...you never know when 'the next time he's in town'

Thanks Fieneke and others for your support. Much appreciated. It's indeed all about passion and love. It's great to be part of this community, critical, understanding, caring. Great bunch of people. Hope to see a lot of you soon.

So, I am new to forums (period), but I do like the independent vibe of AMIT. So this means that we don't agree on many things (even on our appreciation of MK songs, ...for example, I really like "The Car was the One", and many AMITers DON'T like it)... I get that we all have different opinions. Glad we can voice our opinions here. Really!!
And we know that we like and respect each other. I've learned TONS since I've joined, and I am happy to belong to this group of folks who, regardless of some immediate disagreement, REALLY, REALLY love Mark's music!!! :wave

Got to watch some of the videos, Mark lookkkkkkkkked great !!! :) The band sounded awesome !!!!! New shirt. :clap But where is the floral printed shirt? Don't we ladies miss it ? :D ???

Hi to all of you!
I am new to this board and I need little help.
As I see on videoclips from first show, there are 7 people on the stage except Mark Knopfler. If I am not mistaken, they are:
1. Guy Fletcher
2. Richard Bennett
3. John McCusker
4. Glenn Worf
5. Jim Cox
6. Ian Thomas
7. ???
Can you tell me who is number 7 and on what instrument is he playing?
Thank you in advance!

Thank you for your answer, Maxx!
I am from Sofia, Bulgaria. We will see Mark Knopfler on monday (29 April) for second time after his concert here in 2008.
I will try to post here some impressions and photos from the show.
-
we pay shitloads of money to go watch him and buy his cd's and sticks, and even though we all love him, even when he farts the telephone book live on stage, we are allowed to post our dissapointment, i see no issue with that.
Pottel, I am a HUGE freedom of speech fanatic. If you know French philosopher Voltaire: "I hate your ideas, but I will fight to death for you to be able to express them". I never said that anyone should not be allowed to express his or her disappointement, nor did I say that Mark was above criticisim. I merely pointed out that jumping at Guy's jugular on the very night of the very first show, from people who did not even attend the show, some even claming to represent 90% of fans without evidence whatsoever, whereras the tour has yet to developp, was excessive and counterproductive. Ingrid herself seems to agree with me on that now, as she apologized to Guy in a very classy manner...
A few criticisms after watching the vids, so that you see that I am also capable of complaining :)
1) TR is still rather slow and in "Karaoke mode" after "rolling river". This has now been the same pattern since 2008. I had high hopes for a come back of the 2005 style, but I don't believe it will change now. Still I find it slightly better than in 2010. Is it the (slighty) more prominent synth ? Jim's piano playing, a bit more convoluted than Matt's and quite recognizable ? I don't know... I like it, but it's nowhere near the 1996/2001/2005 golden era of TR IMHO.
2) Crows is good, but I still find that Saskatoon version was better, especially for the final solo. Sometimes it is irrational, you just have a crush on a concert where everything is so perfect, Saskatoon did this for me last year; maybe the excellent soomlos recording played a role in that...
3) Going Home is great, definitely better than in 2008, but pales in comparaison to Vaison'96 where the guitar playing was so much more energetic...
4) Why not both Crows and KOG ??! This one is a really valid criticism. I can only go to one show this year (Paris) and I already know I won't get both, this sadens me because there are the only two new songs that were really reworked - the others are pretty similar to the album version, if not inferior (IUTC without Harmonica is just... strange I think).
5) I really hope Border and Piper will be back, these two gems from the GL album were the best open and closer in ages !
6) Let's strangle Sonny Liston ! :)
Still, happy to have the great core DS subset (Sultans, TR, BIA), I don't miss SFA and I could do without overplayed R&J; I think a MK concert without them would be... well, like "On the night" is without Sultans and TR ! I'm also happy to have those solo gems that are WII, SAN, HFB, MT, they are real classics now.
-
Some good point there Herlock. I think they were in safe mode the whole night really, playing as though they knew it was being recorded and it was the first night with the possibility of mistakes!
Bearing that in mind I think the solos were the shortest ever, but the concert was energetic. This is always a case for the first gig and I hear the audience was a fanatical sold-out one which helps too.
Yes, the versions were quite good (or better than expected) but I'd like to see the solo's become longer. If I'm correct TR was a full minute shorter than last tour in it's final solo!
I do disagree on Crows though; I think it's far better now with Mark actually playing some audible guitar during the lyrics of the song. Last year that part of the song just felt flat. I still think the solo at the end ends rather abruptly, but then I want all his solos to go on forever! ;D
-
I was there and I agree 99.99% with herlock, also about the criticism re criticism...
I do not agree with "s it the (slighty) more prominent synth ?" in TR.
It was too loud and seemed even sharp at times...
Dislike...

Indeed TR was shorter...
As for Crows, I don't know, I just have this irrational love of Saskatoon version. I play it over and over on my Iphone :) I think it is this "guitar crying" in the final solo, the best I have heard so far.

Agreed Saskatoon is amazing.

Been searching for that too. And Corned Beef, because I thought that was a little raw too! [groan] ::)

i'm no fan of CBC... sounds like "cheap" R&R to me... a bit the same way I felt about Heavy Fuel at the time...

I know what you mean, but it is a bit of a rocker so it's a good "live" song - gets the crowd going. In contrast to Haul Away which, although a pleasant enough song, just doesn't cut it live at all for me.

Agreed. Haul Away does not do it live for me... not even sure it does it with the studio version :) My wife loves it though, and since she also likes Celine Dion and Lara Fabian, that makes me all the more worried for the quality of the song :D

In my humble opinion it's rude to compare MK to any of those.
Not even his worst tunes; while Haul Away surely doesn't belong to the latter

Surely the crapest song he ever played live was Fizzy and the still. What on earth was he thinking? I should have bought my kids along to get them to sleep.
-
belongs to his worst imho, indeed-
-
It doesn't sound that bad in the context of the KTGC album, but that is saying more about the quality of the album.
-
Can't remember him playing The Fizzy And The Still live. Only the Fish And The Bird.

Just realised that Mark plays the "extended" intro on Hillfarmer's Blues again. He did that back in 2008, but after that his solo part on the Les Paul in the begining has been shorter, and he has rushed into the first verse. Now it's back, and I love it. That song needs that intro :)

Of course I would never compare MK with Celine Dion ! Just take it as a joke :)
Yes, Haul Away is not among his worst tunes, Sony for instance would be far higher on that list; just that I don't find "Haul away" very exciting.

It was me who pinned this thread to the top, as well as the last show. My purpose is for fans to compare these two shows. Sorry if I annoy you.
