Title: "Sultans of swing" in the movie "Argo" by Ben Affleck
Post by: Kay Edvin on February 25, 2013, 01:27:19 PM
Just watching the movie "Argo" by Ben Affleck this morning.
And suddenly after 35 minutes a part of "Sultans of swing" was played!! A small instrumental part! :)
I did not know that it was a part of the music for the film. Cool to hear it :)

Argo won 3 Oscars I think!

I knew about this wayyyy back from another fan.  I was excited to hear it. So, I watched the movie. Indeed it was a short clip perhaps 15 seconds long of "SOS"  It's cool.  :thumbsup :clap

The movie itself was OK for me.

Great film. Liked hearing Sultans but it took me right out of the film! Kind of pointless really.

Saw the film last night, was quite underwhelmed really. This is not the same standard as other 'best pictures' such as The Hurt Locker, No Country For Old Men etc. Must be just Americans feeling proud of the story of the history I suppose.
Sultans was just a time reference back to the era of the film, and it did make me remember some American interviewer who said there was nothing quite like SOS around when it was released.

Whatever it was..I probably saw it posted on the old MK site..long gone. And it's quite possible that it was another Hollywood A-lister...maybe Matt Damon. Memory is such a fleeting thing when you are my age   ;D

Really trivial. As long as you remember to put out the garbage when leaving for a long trip, everything is OK!  ;D

By the way, maybe the use of SOS is a wink at "Wag the dog" movie which has a similar theme (creating a fake movie).

Watched "Argo" to fill a night in a hotel room the other evening and was a little disappointed. Though a good movie, I couldn't see what made it an Oscar winner. Unlike "Wag The Dog", it was a real life story, though it wasn't true-to-life, of course. For example, the exit through Teheran Airport was actually quite smooth, with none of nerve-jarring suspense depicted on screen. But, while we expect that sort of thing, you end up wondering what else was really true in the film and what was not. The script (especially in the Hollywood sequences) was very sharp (and quite funny) and you could understand why Academy voters would enjoy that.  Of the Ben Affleck films I've seen in recent times, I much preferred "The Town" but then I didn't know the outcome - unlike "Argo" for which I knew what would happen before I saw it - and that makes a difference.

I am going to watch ARGO, though I am a bit sceptic after what I have read and heard. Don't care much about the Oscars. They are more like Grammy, each passing year. Thanks twm!

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGO. 3 Oscars! Why?  I mean, that the Iranians are depicted as blinded by insane hatred (the original intro that tries to explain things was too short too soon to hold up for all the movie), while Americans and Canadians are the victims. And yes, we go from the specific every day person to generalizations about  whole nations.  And everybody  ends up going YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH when the plan works, when we should be banging our heads on the wall.
And Europeans and Americans will extract different meanings from the film.   Totally disappointed, but I liked Afflecks appearence for the first time, on a movie.

I couldn't understand either why Argo won  ???  To me it was a mediocre film.  I watched it for a mere reason of hearing SOS played in the movie.  It was cool, albeit wayyy too short !!!

And about the music, totally out of place, IMO. Nice but actually not fitting. SOS very short and only only the guitar solo and licks copied and pasted, and not fitting the pace of the moment. Also great to hear the Zep, but if I was in danger I wouldn't listen to When the levee breaks on purpose at that moment. It is like a warning, tension built up.

Is it not simply used for the sheer facts that A) it's a stunning song and B) the film is set in 1979, the year it was a hit single?

You know I really think that every movie should contain MK's songs. It is a reason to watch them, even if I am disappointed somehow. You are right on both counts but it is the actual timing in the movie that troubles me. It seems so out of place.
