Title: Welcome 2013
Post by: twm on January 01, 2013, 03:07:21 AM
Just back from a bit of first-footing and quite a few Dalwhinnies have been downed in the last hour or two.

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right gude-willy waught
For  auld lang syne.

That's the final verse of "Auld Lang Syne" and that's the point at which you should cross-link hands (and not before).

"Fiere" = "chum" or "friend" and "gude-willy waught" = "goodwill drink" or "goodwill draught", with "waught" meaning a large draught. "Auld Lang Syne" itself literally means "old long since"  or "old long ago" and is taken to mean something like, "for the sake of the old times". One might suggest that the opening verse means: forget past differences and remember only the time when relationships were good. The words are generally attributed to Robert Burns but it is likely that the first verse and chorus, at least, were in the public domain back then and that Burns merely "collected" them.

Should you ever find yourself in Glasgow on Hogmanay (NewYear's Eve) and manage to get tickets for the panto at the Kings Theatre there, they have a wonderful tradition of singing "Auld Lang Syne" at the end of that particular performance, linked with the audience by thick cords from either side of the stage.  It is a great start to New Year festivities.

Anyway, a splendid 2013 to one and all. Maybe we'll meet somewhere down along the road.

Happy New Year to all of you! May the force be with you!

Btw, I love the traditional singing of "Auld Lang Syne" in the end of the last night of the Proms season.

Happy new year to all at AMIT!

I miss hogmanay TV without the late, great Rikki Fulton and his comedy sketch show Scotch and Wry.  You may remember his roles in Local Hero and Comfort and Joy.  He was also in Gorky Park with William Hurt too, but he is best known as one of Scotland's best ever entertainers.  Here he is in a funny sketch from new year 1986 with the also departed Mark McManus as special guest who played tough cop "Taggart" in a Glasgow TV cop show:

As you say, dmg, Rikki Fulton's New Year shows were very funny indeed. Somewhere, I think I still have a DVD of some of his "Reverend I.M.Jolly" monologues from the "Scotch & Wry" programmes. For those who don't know, the Reverend Jolly was not "jolly" at all but was very funny: "Life is like an ashtray - fu' a wee doots" used to crack me up every time - but you have to hear the accent and the intonation to get it. I even bought the biography of Rikki Fulton but can't recall if I kept it.

Happy new year everyone. May 2013 be a great year!

For me personally 2013 brings some great concerts (including Mark, Bruce Springsteen and Golden Earring). I will keep on having fun playing with "No Excuses" (my music school band), am wishing good health to Gerlof, our drummer (he has health issues to battle at the moment...). And off course there is my job. I am given a new challange, starting on febuary 1st, I will be working within a different department.

in french ""Auld Lang Syne" is called "ce n'est qu'un au revoir" which can be translated to "it's just a see you soon" (in opposite to "farewell")

I love Jimi's version from filmore east concerts (with band of gypsys) for the 69-70 new year's eve

Just a note to let you know that as usual Phil Cunningham, Aly Bain and John McCusker among others were performing in the Hogmanay show on BBC Scotland.  Phil and Aly have been doing it for about 50 years now! :o
