He was supposed to come back with MK, but MK decided to stick to Danny on drums, so when his problems were solved or less important, he found that he had free time to work with other artists and, yes, he did a record a tour with Neil Young.

My guess is that there is something else, as MK and also none of the rest of musicians talked again about Chad and what happened. Jim left the band for ear problems, and we saw him in some diary entries going to MK shows as a guest, and he came back to the band, but Chad Cromwell... apparently their paths didnt cross again.

I don't believe he or his family had illness problems. I think Chad was fired in the middle of the tour. I don't know why, but that's what I think

I don't think so, otherwise there would have been no Moscow return announcement first.

He's a well respected professional musician.  Not very nice to speculate that he was fired without any evidence IMO. :)

Technically he was fired when MK decided to continue with Danny and Chad was told not to come back.

I don't believe the family illness thing.
It had to do something with the Neil Young record/tour I think.
Mark was angry with something and then decided that Chad had not to come back and stayed with Danny.
So yes. Maybe he got fired...
Otherwise Chad would have been in the Band longer for sure.
MK was after some time also not happy with Danny's drumming also.
So now Ian is in. I am very happy about that. He is absolutely great. I am sorry. but way better than Danny or Terry e.g.
Very good technician

I don't know whether he was fired or he left on his own but I would like to share some thoughts on him. Although I have nothing against mr. Cromwell I am glad he left the band (or was fired). From some of the concerts I have seen on youtube his drumming was really irritating for me (mostly on Golden Heart tour). For example on the famous A Night in London concert the drumming was horrible in my opinion, especially when they played Going Home. This is just my opinion, I don't mean to trash Chad Cromwell but I am really glad he is gone. Ian Thomas is ok but I prefer Danny Cummings (more former DS member the better eh?  :lol).

For what it's worth, I saw Chad play with Neil Young in 2008 and he played brilliantly. Probably one of the best shows I ever saw, with a particularly lengthy version of Cortez the Killer.

Chad is up there with the best drummers MK has worked with. Other than session musos I would say the order is:

PW
CC
IT
TW
DC
CW

But in their defence, the last threr were all very good live drummers.

I have no complaint toward Chad and would have enjoyed him more if he had returned.

But we were lucky to get Danny. I like both of them and it would would had been great to experience these two during the same tour. Some lucky did.

Actually I find more misterious why Danny left the MK band, or was asked to leave...

Because Mark found Ianto.

EC does this regularly, his band evolves and nobody speculate about why X is replaced by Y and the next tour Y by Z before that X is called back in...

I guess Mark used Danny as long as he did not find what he was looking for. Until Ianto.

In some answers by Guy in his forum, I kinda understood that was Danny himself who recommended Ianto to MK, so there were conversations between tham about a replacement...

That makes me think that maybe Danny didn´t want to stay as a drummer or maybe MK told Danny that he wanted to try something different, or Danny mentioned Ianto to MK in some conversations and Mk started to think about calling him and replace Danny... who knows.
